  • An anion exchange method for separating Y, La, Ce, Pr, and Nd element in monazites and into enriched fractions has been developed. The complexed rare earth ions with EDTA at pH 8.4 passed through the resin column of the various size and eluted with 0.0301 M EDTA as eluent at flow rate of 1 ml/min and 2 ml/min. The result of separation is good in the high column length rather than the low on using the resin of the same amount and the volume of eluent required in eluting all the rare earths at 2 ml/min flow rate is larger than that at 1 ml/min and the result of separation obtained here is unsatisfactory.

  • Due to climate change, countries around the world are actively investing in renewable energy, reducing fossil fuel use. 23.7% of world electricity is supplied by renewable energy. As the technology continues to develop, it is in a level to compete in terms of power generation cost, and investment conditions are improving. However, investment in renewable energy projects is not easy. This study analyzed trends of domestic and international researches on economics assessment applying real options analysis to investment decisions of hydro, solar, and wind power projects, which account for a large portion of renewable energy. This study provides (1) the difference between the traditional economic method and the real options analysis, (2) the application process, and (3) the uncertainty elements and option type of the renewable energy project presented by many studies. The real options analysis is suitable for the detailed investment strategy by considering the uncertainties of the renewable energy project and applying the option to improve the profit or to avoid the risk.

  • process (ACP), electrochemical properties of high heat-generating alkali and alkali earth oxides in molten salt were measured and the behavior of those elements were analyzed. The reduction potentials of Cs, Sr, and Ba in a molten LiCl-$Li_2O$ system were more cathodic than that of Li and closely located one another. Thus, it is expected that the alkali and alkali earth would not hinder the reaction mechanism which is via lithium reduction. Alkali and alkali earth metals are likely to recycle into molten salt when the process is operated beyond metal reduction potentials and the effect of electric current on the mass transport is also determined by measuring the metal concentrations in the molten salt phase at different current conditions.

  • According to the National Fire Data System (NFDS), more than 5,000 vehicle fires have occurred every year for the last 10 years. Vehicle fires are primarily caused by mechanical (breaking system and engine), electrical (wiring and battery), and chemical (oil and fuel gas leakage) problems. The electrical factor has increased with the installation of driver convenience equipment. For example, today, the black box is widely used to provide video data recording of motor vehicle accidents. The black box consists of a front camera, rear camera, and wires. The black box wires are directly connected to the junction box or fuse box from the start battery that operates to provide normal on power supplying for engine stop. It is extremely dangerous when the wires short circuit due to insulation aging, mechanical and electrical stress, etc. In this study, the black box wiring fire risk have been analyzed and investigated when the steady state and abnormal operations, and under the following conditions: wiring arrangements with a high temperature condition, insulation aging, poor contact, and short circuits. The results showed that black box wiring short circuits had a higher fire risk than the other fire hazard elements. To prevent fire hazards caused by black box wiring, the black boxes must be installed by qualified service personnel. Do not modify the wiring, remove the fuse and secure the wiring using cable ties or insulation tape.

  • This paper is a study on the bi-directional DC-DC converter, one of the key elements of 48V-12V dual systems in mild hybrid electric vehicles. Mild hybrid electric vehicles require a bi-directional DC-DC converter that can efficiently transmit power in two directions between a 48V battery and a 12V battery. To develop a bi-directional DC-DC converter with better price competitiveness, upgraded fuel economy, excellent performance and smaller size, this study designed, produced and presented a circuit that improved on the existing one. In the proposed 8-phase bi-directional DC-DC converter, the size of the passive element was reduced through the 8-phase interleaved topology, whereas downscaling had previously posed a difficulty. This study also designed and produced a 2.5kW class prototype. Based on the proposed 8-phase interleaved topology, a size of 227.5 (W) * 172 (L) * 64.35 (H) was achieved. In the boost mode operation and buck operation modes, the maximum efficiency was recorded at 94.04 % and 95.78 %, respectively.

  • A study was carried out on the level of heavy metals, total coliform and benzo(a)pyrene that may be introduced through by-product fertilizers or air pollution to turfgrass in natural turfgrass playground in elementary schools around the western coast and eastern mountain areas in Jeollabuk-do, Korea. The level of heavy metals found in turfgrass was in the order of Cu > Zn > Pb > Cd. The majority of heavy metals was found in the roots. It is presumed that the absorption of some air pollutants and by-product fertilizers or chemical fertilizers. The level of benzo(a)pyrene showed an average of 0.05ng/g with a range between 0.02 to 0.08ng/g in the leaves. In the meantime, none was detected in the stems, while the average for roots was 0.02ng/g with a range between 0.01 and 0.03ng/g. The level detected is that found background level, however, benzo(a)pyrene can be introduced partly from the unstable combustion of fossil fuel or through vehicle emissions. Total coliform distributed in grass showed an average of 12MPN/100ml with a range between 2 and 36MPN/100ml. The density of total coliform displayed no regional predominance. However, in some urban areas, the density was slightly higher. The feces of pets or by-product fertilizers may have contributed to the input of pathogenic micro-organism. Yet the level was found to be negligible.

  • Considering the fuel consumption of car, a light structure of aluminum alloys is desired for car body nowadays. However, fusion welding of aluminum alloys has some problems of reduction of joint efficiency, porosity formation and hot cracking. ill the present work, investigation to improve the joint performance of laser welded joint has been carried out by addition of Cu, Ni, and Zr to A6N01 alloy welds. Aluminum alloy plate of 2.0mm in thickness with filler metal bar was welded by twin beam Nd:YAG laser facility (total power:5kW). The filler metals were prepared by changing the chemical compositions for adding the elements into the weld metal. Thirteen filler metal bars were prepared and pre-placed into the base metal before welding. Ar gas shielding with a flow rate of 10 l/min was used. The defocusing distance is kept at 0 mm. At travel speeds of 3 to 9 m/min and at laser power of 5kW (front beam 2kW rear beam 3kW), full penetration welds were obtained, whereas at travel speeds of 12 to 18 m/min and same power, partial penetration was observed. The joint efficiency of laser-welded joint was improved by the addition of Cu, Ni, and Zr due to the solid solution hardening, grain refining and precipitation hardening. The type of hardening has been further considered by metallurgical examination.
