Fuel cells are electrochemical devices that convert the chemical reaction energy directly into the electrical energy. In a typical fuel cell, gaseous fuel is fed continuously to the anode(negative electrode) compartment and the oxidant(i.e, oxygen from air) is fed continuously to the cathode(positive electrode) compartment; the electrochemical reactions take place at the electrodes to produce an electric current. Many of the operational characteristics of fuel cell systems are superior to those of conventional power generation system because of good efficiency, environmental protection, safty, modularity etc. From those reasons, the fuel cells are considered to be the solution to the future problem of energy conversion. The objective of this paper is to introduce the technical status of fuel cell technologies and our national project for the development of the phosporic acid fuel cell.
The certification performance issued through an external business is sold to companies subject to the emission trading system allocation, and the company subject to the allocation can secure the quota by converting the purchased external business certification performance into offset credits. In this methodology, when fossil fuels that used existing oil boilers (by oil type) were replaced with boilers using propane gas with a relatively low carbon content, the amount of carbon dioxide emission reduction by oil type was recognized. As an initial analysis to make up for the insufficient quota of large corporations, the amount of carbon reduction emissions and emission rights trading was calculated.
The conceptual design of the MIT modular pebble bed reactor is described. This reactor plant is a 250 Mwth, 120 Mwe indirect cycle plant that is designed to be deployed in the near term using demonstrated helium system components. The primary system is a conventional pebble bed reactor with a dynamic central column with an outlet temperature of 900 C providing helium to an intermediate helium to helium heat exchanger (IHX). The outlet of the IHX is input to a three shaft horizontal Brayton Cycle power conversion system. The design constraint used in sizing the plant is based on a factory modularity principle which allows the plant to be assembled 'Lego' style instead of constructed piece by piece. This principle employs space frames which contain the power conversion system that permits the Lego-like modules to be shipped by truck or train to sites. This paper also describes the research that has been conducted at MIT since 1998 on fuel modeling, silver leakage from coated fuel particles, dynamic simulation, MCNP reactor physics modeling and air ingress analysis.

Because of the growing interest in supercritical carbon dioxide power cycle technology owing to its potential enhancement in compactness and efficiency, supercritical carbon dioxide cycles have been studied in the fields of nuclear power, concentrated solar power (CSP), and fossil fuel power generation. This study introduces the current status of the research project on the supercritical carbon dioxide power cycle by Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER). During the first phase of the project, the un-recuperated supercritical Brayton cycle test loop was built and tested. In phase two, researchers are designing and building a supercritical carbon dioxide dual Brayton cycle, which utilizes two turbines and two recuperators. Under the simulation condition considered in this study, it was confirmed that the design parameter has an optimal value for maximizing the net power in the supercritical carbon dioxide dual cycle.
Korea is the 11th largest energy consumption country and 96% of its total energy consumption depends on imports from overseas. Therefore it is a very important task to secure renewable energy sources which can reduce both the carbon-dioxide emission and dependency on overseas energy imports. Among the various renewable energy sources, organic wastes are important sources. In Korea, 113 million toe of methane is generated from organic wastes annually, but only 3.7% is effectively used for energy conversion. Thus, it is very important to make better use of organic wastes, especially for power generation. The goals of this project are to develope the fuel supplying system of Bio Gasturbine (GT) for 5MW-class co-generation system. The fuel supplying system mainly consists of $H_2S$ removal system, Bio Gas compression system, Siloxane removal system and moisture separating systems. The fuel requirement of 5MW-class GT is at around 60% of $CH_4$, $H_2S$ (<30 ppm), Siloxane(<10 mg/$nm^3$) and supply pressure (> 25 bar) from biogas compressor. Main mechnical charateristics of Bio Gasturbine system have the specific performance; 1) high speed turbine speed (12,840 rpm) 2) very clean emmission NOx (<50 ppm) 3) high efficiency of energy conversion rate. This paper focuses on the development of design technology for food waste biogas pretreatment system for 5MW-class biogas turbine. The study also has the plan to replace the fuel of gas turbine and other distributed power systems. As the increase of bioenergy, this system help to contribute to spread more New & Renewable Energy and the establishment of Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) for Korea.
Biogas is a carbon neutral energy and consists of mostly methane and carbon dioxide, with smaller amounts of water vapor, and trace amounts of $H_2S$, Siloxane and other impurities. Hydrogen sulfide and Siloxane usually must be removed before the gas can be used for generation of electricity or heat. The goals of this project are to develope the Fuel conditioning system of Land Fill Gas for 30kW-Micro Gas Turbine co-generation system. The fuel conditioning system mainly consists of $H_2S$ removal system, Land Fill Gas compressor, Siloxane removal system and many filtering systems. The fuel requirement of 30kW MGT is at least 32% of $CH_4$, $H_2S$ (<30 ppm), Siloxane (<5ppb) and supply pressure (> 0.6 MPa) from LFG compressor. Main mechnical charateristics of Micro Gas Turbine system by using LFG have the specific performance; 1) high speed turbine speed (96,000 rpm) 2) very clean emmission NOx (<9 ppm) 3) high efficiency of energy conversion rate. This paper focuses on the development of design technology for LFG fuel conditioning system. The study also has the plan to replace the fuel of gas turbine and other distributed power systems. As the increase of Land Fill Gas (LFG), this system help to contribute to spread more New & Renewable Energy and the establishment of Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) for Korea.

LNG plant projects tend to be implemented in overseas owing to its characteristics, so their project management scheme is somewhat different from those of general projects. Value chain in a LNG plant project includes exploration/production of gases, physical liquefaction/chemical conversion processes, transportation and storage. Key factors in the chain include liquefaction process (including ultra-low temperature liquefaction) to convert natural gas into liquid materials or fuel, and Front End Engineering Design (FEED) package, as well as Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) technology comprising control, operation and construction. Success of a complex LNG plant project implemented in overseas depends on decision-making process in project management. Accordingly, to develop a decision-making model in of plant construction, the study extracted none factors in project management by EPC stage and assessed importance of each factor. The result showed that items in both project management and project risk management are important. Especially, the study developed a decision-making model in the construction stage of a LNG plant project based on the project management factors and importance assessment. The developed decision-making model would lay groundwork in building a decision-making system in construction stage of project management.

Currently, Japan is undertaking a nationwide project to measure and map radioactive contamination around Fukushima, as part of the efforts to restore normalcy following the nuclear accident. The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) manages the Fukushima Environmental Safety Center, located approximately 20 km north of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Minamisōma City, Fukushima Prefecture. In collaboration with the JAEA, this study involved conducting comparison experiments and analyses with radiation detectors in high radiation environments, a challenging task in Korean environments. Environmental radiation surveys were conducted using three types of detectors: CZT, NaI(Tl), and LaBr3(Ce), across two contaminated areas. Dose rate values were converted using dose rate conversion factors for each detector type, and dose rate maps were subsequently created and compared. The detectors yielded similar results, demonstrating their feasibility and reliability in high radiation environments. The findings of this study are expected to be a crucial reference for enhancing the verification and supplementation of procedures and methods in future radiation measurements and mobile surveys in high-radiation environments, using these three types of radiation instruments.

Dimethyl ether (DME) is a new clean fuel as an environmentally-benign energy resource. DME can be manufactured from various energy sources including natural gas, coal, and biomass. In addition to its environmentally friendly properties, DME has similar characteristics to those of LPG. The aim of this article is to represent the development of new DME process with KOGAS's own technologies. KOGAS has investigated and developed new innovative DME synthesis process from synthesis gas in gaseous phase fixed bed reactor. DME has been traditionally produced by the dehydration of methanol which is produced from syngas, a product of natural gas reforming. This traditional process is thus called the two-step method of preparing DME. However, DME can also be manufactured directly from syngas (single-step). The single-step method needs only one reactor for the synthesis of DME, instead of two for the two-step process. It can also alleviate the thermodynamic limitations associated with the synthesis of methanol, by converting the produced methanol into DME, thereby potentially enhancing the overall conversion of syngas into DME. KOGAS had launched the 10 ton/day DME demonstration plant project in 2004 at Incheon KOGAS LNG terminal. In the mid of 2008, KOGAS had finished the construction of this plant and has successively finished the demonstration plant operation. And since 2008, we have established the basic design of commercial plant which can produce 3,000 ton/day DME.
Rigorous multiscale modelling and simulation of the MTR for WGSR was carried out to accurately predict the behavior of process variables and the reactor performance. The MTR consists of 4 fixed bed tube reactors packed with heterogeneous catalysts, as well as surrounding shell part for the cooling purpose. Considering that fluid flow field and reaction kinetics give a great influence on the reactor performance, employing multiscale methodology encompassing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and process modeling was natural and, in a sense, inevitable conclusion. Inlet and outlet temperature of the reactant fluid at the tube side was $345^{\circ}C$ and $390^{\circ}C$, respectively and the CO conversion at the exit of the tube side with these conditions approached to about 0.89. At the shell side, the inlet and outlet temperature of the cooling fluid, which flows counter-currently to tube flow, was $190^{\circ}C$ and $240^{\circ}C$. From this heat exchange, the energy saving was achieved for the flow at shell side and temperature of the tube side was properly controlled to obtain high CO conversion. The simulation results from this research were accurately comparable to the experimental data from various papers.
