The fuel assemblies as the nuclear fuel for the pressurized water reactor(PWR) are loaded in the reactor core throughout the residence time of three to five years. The fuel assembly is manufactured using special welding processes and under strict quality assurance and control systems. In this paper welding parts, welding methods, and welding tests for the integrity of the PWR fuel assemblies are introduced.

In this study, the structural integrity of the spent nuclear fuel assemblies was evaluated by carrying out a 0.3 m drop impact analysis, one of the normal transportation conditions of the nuclear fuel assemblies. For this purpose, the spent nuclear fuel assembly was modeled in detail as beam elements, and a coupled model for impact analysis was developed by inserting the modeled nuclear fuel assemblies into a cask.
The domestic CANDU nuclear power plants have been operated for a long time and various unforeseen spent fuel defects have been discovered. As the spent fuel defects are important factors in the safety of the nuclear power plant, a study on the analysis of the spent fuel defects to prevent their recurrence is necessary. However, in cases where the fuel rods inside the fuel assembly are defected, it is difficult to dismantle the fuel assembly owing to their welded structure and the facility conditions of the plant. Therefore, it is impossible to analyze the spent fuel defect because it is difficult to visually check the shape of the fuel defect. To resolve these problems, an analysis technology that can predict the number of defected fuel rods and defect size was developed. In this study, we developed a methodology for investigating the root cause of spent fuel defects using a database of the earlier fuel defects in the plants. It is anticipated that in the future this analysis technology will be applied when spent fuel defects occur.
This study deals with the shape optimization of a wire spacer fuel assembly of Liquid Metal Reactors (LMRs). The Response Surface based optimization Method is used as an optimization technique with the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer using Shear Stress Transport (SST) turbulence model as a turbulence closure. Two design variables namely, pitch to fuel rod diameter ratio and lead length to fuel rod diameter ratio are selected. The objective function is defined as a combination of the heat transfer rate and the inverse of friction loss with a weighting factor. Three level full-factorial method is used to determine the training points. In total, nine experiments have been performed numerically and the resulting datas have been analysed for optimization study. Also, a comparison has been made between the optimized surface and the reference one in this study.

The feasibility study on burning Am-241, 243 and Cm-244 nuclides in a conventional PWR (Pressurized Water Reactor) was carried out by using the TRIFON code that was developed by the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics in Russia in 1992. TRIFON code uses updated ABBN Russian nuclear cross section library. The reference reactor is the Korea nuclear power plant unit 8 (YGN 2). The burning effect of Am-241, 243 and Cm-244 nuclides was studied with UO$_2$(3.5 w/o)fuel assembly and MOX (4.44 w/o) fuel assembly. The loaded mass ratio of Am-241, 243 and Cm-244 nuclides was obtained from the mass ratio of Am-241, 243 and Cm-244 nuclides in 10 year cooling spent fuel with average discharge burnup of 33 GWD/MTU. The effective transmutation rates of Am-241, 243 and Cm-244 nuclides in UO$_2$ fuel assembly were found to be higher than those in MOX fuel assembly. The result from TRIFON code was compared to that from CASMO-3/NEM-3D code system. For more reliable calculation of transmutation for MA(Minor Actinides) more sophisticated decay chain scheme of MA should be investigated and nuclear cross section library of MA should be considerably improved.
As a turbulence-enhancing device, a mixing vane installed at a spacer grid of the fuel assembly plays a role in improving the convective heat transfer by generating either swirl flow in the subchannels or cross flow between fuel rod gaps. Therefore, both configuration and arrangement pattern of a mixing vane are important factors that determine the performance of a mixing vane. In this study, in order to examine the flow distribution features inside $5{\times}5$ fuel assembly with swirl-type mixing vanes used in benchmark calculation of OECD/NEA, simulations were conducted with commercial CFD software ANSYS CFX R.14. Predicted results were compared to data measured from MATiS-H (Measurement and Analysis of Turbulent Mixing in Subchannels-Horizontal) test facility. In addition, the effect of swirl-type mixing vanes on flow pattern inside the fuel assembly was described.
This paper presents neutronics design of VVER-1000 fuel assembly using burnable poison particles (BPPs) for controlling excess reactivity and pin-wise power distribution. The advantage of using BPPs is that the thermal conductivity of BPP-dispersed fuel pin could be improved. Numerical calculations have been conducted for optimizing the BPP parameters using the MVP code and the JENDL-3.3 data library. The results show that by using $Gd_2O_3$ particles with the diameter of $60{\mu}m$ and the packing fraction of 5%, the burnup reactivity curve and pin-wise power distribution are obtained approximately that of the reference design. To minimize power peaking factor (PPF), total BP amount has been distributed in a larger number of fuel rods. Optimization has been conducted for the number of BPP-dispersed rods, their distribution, BPP diameter and packing fraction. Two models of assembly consisting of 18 BPP-dispersed rods have been selected. The diameter of $300{\mu}m$ and the packing fraction of 3.33% were determined so that the burnup reactivity curve is approximate that of the reference one, while the PPF can be decreased from 1.167 to 1.105 and 1.113, respectively. Application of BPPs for compensating the reduction of soluble boron content to 50% and 0% is also investigated.
Design requirements for the nuclear fuel assembly grid of the pressurized water reactor are reviewed from the mechanical/structural point of view. And mechanical/structural tests and numerical analyses on the various spacer grid candidates that has been uniquely designed by KAERI are carried out to find out their mechanical/structural performance. As a result, the results from the numerical analyses are good agreements with test results.
The early localization of a fuel subassembly with a failed (wet rupture) fuel pin is very important in reactors to limit the associated radiological and operational consequences. This requires a fast and reliable system for failure detection and their localization in the core. In the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor, the system specially designed for this purpose is Failed Fuel Location Modules (FFLM) housed in the control plug region. It identifies a failed sub-assembly by detecting the presence of delayed neutrons in the sodium from a failed sub-assembly. During the commissioning phase of PFBR, it is mandatory to demonstrate the FFLM effectiveness. The paper highlights the engineering and physics design aspects of FFLM and the integrated simulation towards its function demonstration with a source assembly containing a perforated metallic fuel pin. This test pin mimics a MOX pin of 1 cm2 of geometrical defect area. At 10% power and 20% sodium flow rate, the counts rate in the BCCs of FFLM system range from 75 cps to 145 cps depending upon the position of DN source assembly. The model developed for the counts simulation is applicable to both metal and MOX pins with proper values of k-factor and escape coefficient.
For commercialization of fuel cell electric vehicles, one of the key objectives is to reduce cost of full stack assembly. Regarding Membrane Electrode Assembly, the major issue is to improve fuel cell activation process in the initial Hydrogen Oxidation Reaction and Oxygen Reduction Reaction. In this research, the VD (Vacuum Drying) process has been developed for improvement of activation process. The VD condition is developed by controlling the temperature and degree of vacuum to remove the remaining solvent of electrode. Consequently, the electrode applied to VD process showed the low characteristics such as 3.5% of remaining solvent content and the improved efficiency such as 15% of activation process speed.
