The spray characteristics of the oxidizer-rich preburner are investigated. This system is generally operated at an oxidizerfuel mixture ratio of 50. The spray quality and mixing performance are very important for safe combustion. To know the spray characteristics of the oxidizer-rich preburner, we have designed various swirl injectors and measured droplet velocity and size by the PDPA system. The flow discharge coefficient of the fuel orifice is $0.12{\sim}0.21$, oxidizer orifice discharge coefficient is $0.16{\sim}0.28$. From the spray visualization, fuel nozzle spray angle is $15^{\circ}{\sim}25^{\circ}$, oxidizer nozzle spray angle is $65^{\circ}{\sim}85^{\circ}$ and combined spray angle is reduced $2^{\circ}{\sim}5^{\circ}$ compared to the oxidizer nozzle only case. From the PDPA measurement, droplet SMD is $175\;{\mu}m$ at 50 mm and $190\;{\mu}m$ at 100 mm of variant 1 combined case. The number concentration measurement revealed the reason of the droplet diameter increasement with distance. That is due to drop coalescence results from collision of drops which is occurred in dense sprays at a long distance from nozzle orifice exit.
The purpose of this study is the experimental and numerical investigation on the DME spray characteristics in the combustion chamber according to the injection timing in a common-rail injection system. The visualization system consisted of the high speed camera with metal halide lamp was used for analyzing the spray characteristics such as spray development processes and the spray tip penetration in the free and in-cylinder spray under various ambient pressure. In order to observe the spray characteristics as a function of injection timing, the piston head shape of re-entrant type was created and the fuel injected into the chamber according to various distance between nozzle tip and piston wall in consideration of injection timing. Also, the spray and evaporation characteristics in the cylinder was calculated by using KlVA-3V code for simulating spray development process and spray tip penetration under real engine conditions. It was revealed that the high ambient pressure of 3 MPa was led to delay the spray development and evaporation of DME spray. In addition, injected sprays after BTDC 20 degrees entered the bowl region and the spray at the BTDC 30 degrees was divided into two regions. In the calculated results, the liquefied spray tip penetration and fuel evaporation were shorter and more increased as the injection timing was retarded, respectively.
The prediction of diesel spray penetration has been the subject of several works and intensive investigations are still underway by many researchers. It is required to summarize the correlations developed before 1990 days and to introduce the correlations reported recently in the literature. The existing zero-dimensional models for the prediction of diesel fuel spray penetration can be classified as theoretical and empirical correlations. Of various correlations, the models considered in this paper were selected as based on the evaluation results of previous reviews and the recently published works in the literature. The existing theoretical correlations can be classified into seven categories and the existing empirical ones as two categories in this review. According to the review of existing models, the dominating factors for the prediction of spray tip penetration are the spray angle, discharge coefficient, pressure drop across nozzle, ambient density and orifice diameter and time after the start of injection. Especially, the definition for the measurement of spray angle is different with researchers. It is required to evaluate the existing spray tip penetration models for the very high injection pressure and other fuel sprays such as DME. It is also required to evaluate the correlations for the prediction of diesel spray penetration with the connection of liquid-phase penetration.
Spray characteristics of a twin-hole air shrouded nonle designed for gasoline injectors was investigated by using laser diffraction particle analyzer (LDPA) and tomography reconstruction- A confined spray chamber which is optically accessible through a pair of glass windows was made to simulate the fuel injection condition in intake manifold of gasoline engine. The measurement was applied to the twin hole injector with and without an air shroud. It demonstrates that for the case with an air shroud, fine atomization is achieved and there exists a large number of fine droplets between the region of the main spray streams, which conforms with the spray visualization. The drop size distribution was investigated as a function of elapse time after fuel injection. The distribution was greatly affected by the measurement position from the injector exit. Also, the spatially resolved spray volume fraction and Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD) from line-of-sight data of the LDPA are tomographically reconstructed by Convolution Fourier transformation under the steady injection condition.

The capability of high pressure injection with small fuel quantify at all engine operating conditions is one of the main feature in common rail fuel injection system, which is used in small and light-duty Diesel engine. The key parameter for the better atomized fuel sprays and multiple injections of this common rail fuel injection control, that can be freely selected irrespective of the engine speed and load is the mechanism controlling the needle energizing and movement in high pressure Diesel injector. In the electro-hydraulic injector, the injection nozzle is being opened and closed by movement of the injector's needle which is balanced by pressure between the nozzle seat and the needle control chamber. This study describes the macroscopic spray structure characteristics of the common rail Diesel injectors with different electric driving method i.e. the solenoid-driven and piezo-driven type. The macroscopic spray characteristics such as spray tip speed. spray tip penetration and spray cone angle were investigated by the high speed spray, which is measured by the back diffusion light illumination method with optical system for the high speed temporal photography in a constant volume chamber pressurized by nitrogen gas. As the results, the prototype piezo-driven injector system was designed and fabricated for the first time in domestic case and the effect of injector's needle response driven by different drive type was compared between the solenoid and piezo-driven injector It was found therefore. that the piezo-driven injector showed faster needle response and had better needle control capability by altering the electric input value than the solenoid-driven injector.
This paper describes the effect of DME, biodiesel blended fuels on the macroscopic spray characteristics in a high pressure diesel injection system using Background Oriented Schlieren (BOS) method. The BOS method for visualization of impingement evaporation sprays to analyze macroscopic spray properties and evolutionary processes. In this work, the blending ratio of DME in the blended fuel are 0, 50, 100% by weight ratio. In order to investigate the macroscopic impinged spray characteristics under the various injection parameters and blending ratio. In this work, a mini-sac type single-hole nozzle injector with nozzle hole was length 0.7 mm and diameter of 0.3 mm was used. According to the result, the spray area of the collision wall increased as the DME mixing ratio increased, and the evolutionary pattern showed a stepwise increase due to the collision effect of the wall. Also, results of impinged spray area were increased according to increasing injection pressure.
In the present investigation, experimental studies were conducted on the fire suppression performance of twin-fluid water mist spray which is subjected to thermal radiation in a closed space. Downward-directed water-mist sprays, interacting with an under kerosene pool fire, were investigated in a test facility. The mass mean diameter of water-mist droplets were measured by PMAS under various flow conditions. The developed twin-fluid water mit spray nozzle satisfied the criteria of NFPA 750, Class 1. The mechanism of fire suppression by fine water mist was concluded to be the cooling of the fire surface which leads to the suppression of fuel evaporation. It was proved that the automatic twin-fluid water mist spray system under lower pressures could be applied to an industrial facilities.
The present study is mainly motivated to investigate the vaporization, auto-ignition and combustion processes in high-pressure engine conditions. In order to realistically simulate the dimethyl ether (DME) spray dynamics and vaporization characteristics in high-pressure and high-temperature environment, the high-pressure vaporization model is utilized. The interaction between chemistry and turbulence is treated by employing the Representative Interaction Flamelet (RIF) model. The detailed chemistry of 336 elementary steps and 78 chemical species is used for the DME/air reaction. Numerical results indicate that the RIF approach, together with the high-pressure vaporization model, successfully predicts the essential feature of ignition and spray combustion processes.
