Fuel injection rate of an injector is affected by various injection conditions such as injection duration, fuel temperature, injection pressure, and voltage in LPG liquid injection systems for either a port-fuel-injection(PFI) or a direct injection(DI) in a cylinder. Even fuel injection conditions are changed, the air-fuel ratio should be accurately controlled to educe exhaust emissions. In this study, correction factor for the fuel injection rate of an injector is derived from the density ratio and the pressure difference ratio. A voltage correction factor is researched from injection test results on an LPG liquid injection engine. A compensation method of the fuel injection rate is proposed for a fuel injection control system. The experimental results for the LPG liquid injection system in a SI-engine show that this system works well on experimental range of engine speed and load conditions. And the fuel injection rate is accurately controlled by the proposed compensation method.

A computer simulation with predict the fuel injection rates and the fuel injection pressure behaviors in diesel engine fuel injection systems would by very useful in designing or improving fuel injection systems. In this paper we developed computer program in order to predict the behaviors of the fuel injection rate and the injection pressure for Electronic Hydraulic Ultra-High Pressure Fuel Injection System. We've applied the continuity and momentum equations for the hydraulic phenomena and the dynamics of individual components of the Electronic Hydraulic Fuel Injection System. To solve all the equations numerically we've applied the Runge-kutta IV method. Water hammer equations were applied for the hydraulic pipe solution, and the method of characteristics was employed in our calculations. The simulation results were compared with the experimental results for: Accumulator pressure, Injection pressure and unjection rate. As a result, The simulation results agree very well with our experimental results. We found that a large accumulator and the high speed solenoid valve were required, and the compression volume of the fuel had to be as small as possible in order to acheive ultra-high pressure fuel injection.

In the present study, reduction of harmful exhaust gas in a diesel engine using stratified injection system of dual fuel (diesel fuel and methanol) was tried. The nozzle and fuel injection pump of conventional injection system were remodeled to inject dual fuel in order from the same injector. The quantity of each fuel was controlled by micrometers, which were mounted at rack of injection pumps. The injection ratio of dual fuel was certificated by volumetric ratio in injection quantity test. Cylinder pressure and exhaust gas were measured and analyzed under various supply condition of duel fuel. We confirmed that combustion of dual fuel was performed successful1y by using modified injection system in a D.I. diesel. Soot and NOx are simultaneously reduced by stratified injection without large deterioration of thermal efficiency, but THC and CO are relatively increased.
Natural gas is a promising alternative fuel of internal combustion engines. In this paper, the combustion and emission characteristics were investigated on a natural gas engine at two different fuel injection timings during the intake stroke. The results show that fuel injection timing affects combustion processes. The optimum spark timing (MBT) achieving the maximum indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) is related to fuel injection timing and air fuel ratio. At MBT spark timing, late fuel injection timing delays ignition timing and prolongs combustion duration in most cases. But fuel injection timing has little effect on IMEP at fixed lambdas. The coefficient of variation (COV) of IMEP is dependent on air fuel ratio, throttle positions and fuel injection timings at MBT spark timing. The COV of IMEP increases with lambda in most cases. Late fuel injection timings can reduce the COV of IMEP at part loads. Moreover, engine-out CO and total hydrocarbon (THC) emissions can be reduced at late fuel injection timing.

This study was carried out to improve the design of fuel injection nozzle for marine medium speed diesel engine. For this purpose, fuel injection nozzle was modeled and simulated using CATIA V5R19 and FLUENT & MSC Nastran. Analyses of flow and heat transfer, respectively, were performed to find the optimal design of fuel injection nozzle. As the results, big pressure drop, which may lead to cavitation damage, was occurred at inlet of fuel injection hole with diameter 0.3mm. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the increase of mean temperature of fuel injection nozzle was almost a half in comparison with that of fuel injection nozzle tip.

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is used in spark ignition (SI) engines. Fuel injection rate of an injector is affected by fuel temperature and pressure in LPG liquid injection systems for either a multi-point-injection (MPI) or a direct injection (DI) engine. Even fuel injection conditions are varied, the air-fuel ratio should be accurately controlled to reduce exhaust emissions. In this study, a correction factor fur the fuel injection rate of an injector is derived from density ratio and pressure difference ratio. A compensation method of injected fuel amount is proposed for a fuel injection control system. The experimental results for the LPG liquid injection system in a SI engine show that this system works well fur a full range of engine speed and load condition, and the air-fuel ratio is accurately controlled by the proposed correction factor.

Lean burn engine, classified into port injection and direct injection, is recognized as a promising way to meet better fuel economy. Especially, LPG direct injection engine is becoming increasingly popular due to their potential for improved fuel economy and emissions. Also, LPDi engine has the advantages of higher power output, higher thermal efficiency, higher EGR tolerance due to the operation characteristics of increased volumetric efficiency, compression ratio and ultra-lean combustion scheme. However, LPDi engine has many difficulties to be solved, such as complexity of injection control mode (fuel injection timing, injection rate), fuel injection pressure, spark timing, unburned hydrocarbon and restricted power. This study is investigated to the influence of spark timing, fuel injection position and fuel injection rate on the combustion stability of LPDi engine. Piston shape is constituted the bowl type piston. The characteristics of combustion is analyzed with the variations of spark timing, fuel injection position and fuel injection rate (early injection, late injection) in a LPDi engine.
This study investigates the lubrication characteristics of fuel injection pumps with reference to different fuel oils. Medium-speed diesel engines use fuel oils with various viscosities, such as heavy fuel oil (HFO, which is a high-viscosity fuel oil) and light diesel oil (LDO, which is a low-viscosity fuel oil). When fuel oil with a low viscosity is used, both fuel oil and lubricating oil lubricate the system. Thus, the lubrication of the fuel injection pump is in a multi-viscosity condition when the fuel oil in use changes. We suggest three cases of multi-viscosity models, and divide the fuel injection pump into three lubrication sections: a, the new oil section; b, the mixed oil section; and c, the used oil section. This study compares the lubrication characteristics with variation of the multi-viscosity model, clearance. The volume of Section b does not affect the lubrication characteristics. The lubrication characteristics of the fuel injection pump are poor when high-viscosity fuel oil transfers to low-viscosity fuel oil. This occurs because the viscosity in the new oil section (i.e., Section a) dominates the lubrication characteristics of the fuel injection pump. However, the lubricant oil supply in the used oil section (i.e., Section c) can improve the lubrication characteristics in this condition. Moreover, the clearances of the stem and head significantly influence the lubrication characteristics when the fuel oil changes.

A fuel injection system has an important role in the performance and emission gas in a diesel engine. In this paper, an experimental study has been performed to verify the effect of the performance and the emission gas with the factors such as diameters of an injection nozzle hole, diameters of an injection pipe, and injection timing in the fuel injection system. We have obtained the results that the fuel consumption ratio is reduced and NOx concentration is increased as the smaller diameter of injection nozz1e hole, the smaller diameter of injection pipe, and more advanced injection timing. They show that optimizing the factors of fuel injection system is significant to enhance the performance of the engine system and consumption ratio of fuel, smoke, and NOx.

In this study, a simulation program was developed, which could simulate a fuel injection system for low-speed marine diesel engine. The fuel injection system was divided into fuel injection pump, high pressure pipe and fuel injection valve. The unsteady flow in the high pressure injection pipe was analyzed by the method of characteristics, considering cavitation and variation of fuel density and bulk modulus. It was confirmed that the simulation results were good agree with experimental results of injection pressure and quantity at the high pressure distributor in fuel injection system for the training ship "M/V Hannara". And the effects of the atomizer hole diameter, maximum needle lift, plunger diameter and nozzle opening pressure were also investigated with simulating results.g results.
