The purpose of this paper is to study the possibility of practical use of gasoline-methanol mixed fuel as an alternative fuel of gasoline engines in the light of engine performances and harmful exhaust emissions as well as mixings and separations of the mixed fuels. When the methanol of 99.8% purity is mixed with super or regular gasoline available on the market today, the experimental results obtained without modifying carburetor in this study are as follows; 1.The separation ratio depends upon the gasoline-methanol mixing ratio only, regardless of fuel temperature and fuel additives for preventing separation of phase. 2.The critical absorption ratio is affected by the gasoline-methanol mixing ratio, its temperature and the quantity of fuel additives. 3.Concerning the distillation temperature, the initial point of all sorts of fuels is almost same, but 10% point and 35-60% point of mixed fuels are lower than those of gasoline only. 4.In case of throttle valve opening set, engine output using the mixed fuels is decreased compared to gasoline, but thermal efficiency is increased as a consequence of decreasing specific energy consumption. 5.In case of fixed load test, thermal efficiency is increased at low engine speed even under low part-load as well as under comparatively high part-load including full load. 6.CO and NOx emissions are reduced remarkably with the mixed fuels.

Recently it is strongly required on lower fuel consumption. lower exhaust emission, higher engine performance. and social demands in a spark ignition gasoline engine. In this study. the experimental engine used at test. it has been modified the lean burn gasoline engine. and used the programmable engine management system, and connected the controller circuit which is designed for the engine control. At the parametric study of the engine experiment, it has been controlled with fuel injection, ignition timing. swirl mode, equivalence ratio engine dynamometer load and speed as the important factors governing the engine performance adaptively. It has been found the combustion characteristics to overcome the hysteresis phenomena between normal and lean air-fuel mixing ranges. by mean of the look-up table set up the mapping values. at the optimum conditions during the engine operation. As the result, it is found that the strength of the swirl flow with the variation of engine speed and load is effective on combustion characteristics to reduce the bandwidth of the hysteresis regions. The results show that mass fraction burned and heat release rate pattern with crank angle are reduced much rather, and brake specific fuel consumption is also reduced simultaneously.

A gasoline direct injection single cylinder engine has been developed to study operational characteristics for highly stratified conditions. Parameters related to design and experiment were also studied to understand the characteristics of combustion and emissions at some part load conditions. It was found that optimal timings between the end of fuel injection and spark ignition were existed for stable combustion under the stratified modes, In a low engine speed, fuel spray behavior around piston bowl was important for stable combustion. The in-cylinder air motion affecting fuel spray behavior was found to be a dominant factor at higher engine speed as fuel injection timing had to be advanced to secure enough time for fuel evaporation and mixing with surrounding air. As swirl ratio increased, spark timing could be advanced for stable combustion and a higher compression ratio could be used for improved fuel consumption and stable combustion at the stratified mode. It was also observed that electrode geometry and piston bowl shape played an important role for combustion and emission characteristics and some results were shown for comparison.

The purpose of this work is to investigate the effect of premixing condition on the combustion and exhaust emission characteristics in a HCCI diesel engine. To from homogeneous charge before intake manifold, the premixed gasoline fuel is injected into a premixed tank by fuel injection system and the premixed gasoline fuel is ignited by direct injected diesel fuel. Experimental result shows the NOx and soot emissions are decreased linearly with the increase of premixed ratio. In the case of intake air temperature $20^{\circ}C$ with light load, the specific fuel consumptions are increased with the rise of premixed ratio and HC and CO emissions are also increased. But the intake air heating can improve the specific fuel consumption at light load condition because increased air temperature promotes the combustion of premixed mixture. In the case of high intake air temperature with high load condition, premixed fuel is auto-ignited before diesel combustion and soot emission is increased.

The performance improvement and emission reduction in a turbocharged D.I. diesel engine was studied experimentally in this paper. The system of intake port, fuel injection and turbochager are very important factors which have influence on the engine performance and exhaust emission because the properties in the injected fuel depend on the combustion characteristics. Through these experiments it can be expected to meet performance and emission by optimizing the main parameters; the swirl ratio of intake port, fuel injection system and turbocharger. The swirl ratio of intake port was modified by hand-working and measured by impulse swirl meter. Through this steady flow test, we knew that the increase of swirl ratio is decreasing the mean flow coefficient, whereas the gulf factor is increasing. And the optimum results of engine performance and emission are as follows; the swirl ratio is 2.43, injection timing is BTDC 13。 CA, compression ratio is 16, combustion bowl is re-entrant 5$^{\circ}$, nozzle hole diameter is $\Phi$0.28*6, turbocharger is GT40 model which are compressor A/R 0.58 AND turbine A/R 1.19.
To know the possibility of fuel substitution for Diesel engine with the seed oil of Evodia daniellii, which is one of the native oil seed trees in Korea. the refined seed oil mixed with light oil in the various rates was tested in the 8 PS Diesel engine: the output, the fuel consumption rate, the governor performance, the rpm stability in the total loading condition. the content of graphite in the burned gas, and the traction coefficients at the different gear stages were maintained The following results were discussed. 1. The output at the normal revolution (2200rpm)was increased as the percent seed oil increased. At the lower rpm (2000-1500rpm )there were no consistent difference in the outputs among fuels of the different percent seed oil 2. The rate of fuel consumption was inclosed as the percent seed oil increased in each loading condition. 3. The more percent sud oil was mixed in the fuel. the better governor performance appeared at both the instantaneous and stable speed. 4. The more percent seed oil was mixed In the fuel, the more stable rpm ratio was maintained 5. The graphite content In the burned gas was increased as the load increased, but there was no apparent difference in the content at each load among the 100$\%$ seed oil, the 100$\%$ light oil, and the mixtures in various rates. 6. In all fuel mixtures the maximam traction coefficent appeared at the third transmission gear stage. Generally in over all transmission gear stages the fuel mixtures of the seed oil:light oil ratio from 7:3 to 5:5 resulted greater traction force than the other fuels.
As an attempt to reduce the consumption of petroleum resources and to improve the performance of a kerosene engine, a series of experiments was conducted using several kinds of ethanol-kerosene blends under the various compression ratios. The engine used in this study was a single-cylinder, four-cycle kerosene engine having a compression ratio of 4.5. To investigate the feasibility of ethanol-kerosene blends in the original engine, kerosene and blends of 5-percent, 10-percent, and 20-percent-ethanol, by volume, with kerosene were used. And to investigate the feasibility of improving the performance of the kerosene engine, a portion of the cylinder head was cut off to increase the compression ratio up to 5.0 by reducing the combustion chamber volume. Kerosene and blends of 30-percent and 40-percent-ethanol, by volume, with kerosene were used for the modified engine with an increased compression ratio. Variable speed tests at wide-open throttle were also conducted at five speed levels in the range of 1000 to 2200 rpm for each compression ratio and fuel type. Volumetric efficiency, engine torque, and brake specific fuel consumption were determined, and brake thermal efficiency based on the lower heating values of kerosene and ethanol was calculated. The results obtained in the study are summarized as follows: A. Test with the original engine: (1) No abnormal conditions were found when burning ethanol-kerosene blends in the original engine. (2) Volumetric efficiency increased with ethanol concentration in blends. When burning blends of 5-percent, 10-percent, and 20-percent ethanol, by volume, with kerosene, average volumetric efficiency increased 1.6 percent, 2.6 percent, and 4.1 percent respectively, than when burning kerosene. (3) Mean engine torque increased 5.2 percent for 5-percent-ethanol blend, 9.3 percent for 10-percent-ethanol blend, and 11.5 percent for 20-percent-ethanol blend than for kerosene. Increase in engine torque when using ethanol-kerosene blends was due to the improved combustion characteristics of ethanol as well as an increase in volumetric efficiency. (4) Up to ethanol concentration of 20 percent, mean brake specific fuel consumption was nearly constant inspite of the difference in heating value between ethanol and kerosene. (5) Brake thermal efficiency increased 0.3 percent for 5-percent-ethanol blend, 3.8 percent for 10-percent-ethanol blend, and 6.8 percent for 20-percent-ethanol blend than for kerosene. B. Test with the modified engine with an increased compression ratio: (1) When burning kerosene, mean volumetric efficiency, engine torque, and brake thermal efficiency were somewhat lower than for the original engine. (2) Engine torque increased 15.1 percent for 30-percent-ethanol blend and 18.4 percent for 40-percent-ethanol blend than for kerosene. (3) There was no significant difference in brake specific fuel consumption regardless of ethanol concentration in blends. (4) Brake thermal efficiency increased 15.0 percent for 30-percent-ethanol blend and 19. 5 percent for 40-percent-ethanol blend than for kerosene.

Hybrid powertrain systems have been developed to improve the fuel efficiency of internal combustion engines. In the case of a parallel hybrid powertrain system, an engine and a motor are directly coupled. Because of the hardware configuration of the parallel hybrid system, friction and the pumping losses of internal combustion engines always exists. Such losses are the primary factors that result in the deterioration of fuel efficiency in the parallel-type hybrid powertrain system. In particular, the engine operates as a power consumption device during the fuel-cut condition. In order to improve the fuel efficiency for the parallel-type hybrid system, cylinder deactivation (CDA) technology was developed. Cylinder deactivation technology can improve fuel efficiency by reducing pumping losses during the fuel-cut driving condition. In a CDA engine, there are two operating modes: a CDA mode and an SI mode according to the vehicle operating condition. However, during the mode change from CDA to SI, a serious fluctuation of the air-fuel ratio can occur without adequate control. In this study, an air-fuel ratio control algorithm during the mode transition from CDA to SI was proposed. The control algorithm was developed based on the mean value CDA engine model. Finally, the performance of the control algorithm was validated by various engine experiments.

In this study, the combustion and exhaust emission characteristics in a gasoline direct injection engine with variations of the bio-ethanol-gasoline blending ratio and the excess air factor were investigated. To investigate the effects of the excess air factor and the bio-ethanol blends with gasoline, combustion characteristics such as the in-cylinder combustion pressure, rate of heat release (ROHR), and the fuel consumption rate were analyzed. The reduction of exhaust emissions such as carbon monoxide (CO), unburned hydrocarbon (HC), and nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$) were compared with those of gasoline fuel with various excess air factors. The results showed that the peak combustion pressure and ROHR of bio-ethanol blends were slightly higher and were increased as bio-ethanol blending ratio is increased. Brake specific fuel consumption increased for a higher bio-ethanol blending ratio. The exhaust emissions decreased as the bio-ethanol blending ratio increased under all experimental conditions. The exhaust emissions of bio-ethanol fuels were lower than those of gasoline.
