Reducing technology of fuel-NOx generation using fuel-rich/-lean catalytic combustion (연료(燃料) 과농(過濃)/희박(稀薄) 조절(調節)의 촉매연소(觸媒燃燒)에 의한 Fuel-Nox 저감(低減) 기술(技術))

  • A two-step fuel-rich/fuel-lean catalytic combustion seems to be one of the most effective methods to control simultaneously the NO generation and the hydrocarbon (HC) conversion from fuel-bound nitrogen. By controlling equivalent air ratio for maintaining fuel-rich and fuel-lean condition over each catalytic layer, space velocity, inlet temperature, and catalyst component, the HCand ammonia conversion efficiency higher than 95% could be achieved, with ammonia conversion to NO remaining below 5%. The experimental results wouldbe applied to the combustion of land fill gas and to gasified refuse-derived fuels as a method of minimizing NO generation.

  • The purpose of this investigation is to carry out, the influence factor on the fuel spray characteristics for improve the engine combustion performance and exhaust omission in direct injection type diesel engine. The fuel properties, fuel spray structure and the shape or the piston surface of diesel engine play an important role of engine combustion process and exhaust emission. In order to obtain the effect of using auxiliary chamber and emulsified fuel on the fuel spray characteristics the experiment un conduct with single cylinder direct injection type diesel engine to examine the engine performance and gas emission. The results of this investigation showed that the increase auxiliary chamber volume and emulsified fuel give an effect on the fuel spray characteristics by reduced the concentration of nitric oxide emission in the combustion chamber. Also it can improve the combustion characteristics such as cylinder pressure, rate of pressure rise and rate of heat release.

  • This study investigates the combustion and heat transfer characteristics of a 100MWe pulverized coal boiler retrofitted for demonstration of oxy-coal combustion. By computational fluid dynamics (CFD), the flame temperature and wall heat flux were compared for air-fuel and oxy-fuel combustion with different $O_2$ concentration in the oxidizers. It was found that the oxy-fuel combustion requires an $O_2$ concentration higher than 27 vol.% for the boiler to achieve the similar value of wall heat flux with air-fuel combustion.

  • Due to the development of the petroleum refining technology and continuously increased demand from markets, a quantity of gasoline and diesel oil produced from a restricted quantity of crude oil has been increasing, and residual fuel to be used at marine diesel engines has been gradually becoming low quality. As a result, it was recently reported that trouble oils which cause abnormal combustion such as knocking with extreme noise and misfire from internal combustion engines were increasing throughout the world. In this study, an author investigated ignitability and combustion quality by using combustion analyzer with constant volume(FCA, Fuel Combustion Analyzer) and middle speed diesel engine about MDO(Marine Diesel Oil), HFO(Heavy Fuel Oil), LCO(Light Cycle Oil) and Blend-HFO which was blended LCO of 1000 liters with HFO of 600 liters. Moreover, for betterment of ignitability and combustion quality of injected fuels, multi-injection experiment was carried out in the diesel engine using Blend-HFO.   • This article describes NO emission characteristics in SM coal combustion. Combustion experiments was performed in the method of increasing temperature after feeding coal and feeding coal after increasing temperature. NOx emission is in inverse proportion to combustion temperature at the fuel rich condition and it was caused by conversion fuel N to $N_{2}$ at the strong reduction condition. In addition, feeding gas flow rate increased as total fuel NOx increase by conversion of fuel N to NO at the oxidation condition. It could be separated in total fuel-N, volatile-N, char-N to NO according to analysis of total fuel NO emission from char combustion at each temperature. In the result, almost total NOx emission was caused by volatile-N in SM-coal.

  • Coal gasification fuel has generally a lower calorific values than natural gas and also contains ammonia which is a main source of fuel NOx. Such a fuel is in need of the advanced technologies for the NOx reduction with higher combustion efficiency. Therefore fuel staged combustion was investigated for the fuel NOx control using a bench scale gas combustoi for the fuel NOx control. Parametric screening studies were performed with the variation of air ratio, retention length and reburning fuel. The NOx reduction efficiency was increased with an increase of total air ratio having optimum reburning air ratio differently, The Increased retention length of the reburning zone was preferable for NOx reduction. Hydrocarbonic reburning fuels like propane and butane were more effective for the NOx reduction efficiency than hydrogen fuel. The NOx concentration at exit was linearly increased according to the fuel-N the fuel.

  • Most researches regarding emulsified fuel were in the areas of emulsifier, emulsified fuel manufacturing and emulsified fuel droplet combustion, but there were little papers published regarding emulsified fuel combustion and boiler efficiency in an industrial boiler. The main purpose of this study is to clarify whether improvements in the boiler efficiency and the reduction of pollutants such as CO, NOx, SOx and smoke exist or not when emulsified fuels are combusted in the commercial boiler. Main experimental parameters were water content in heavy oil , excess $O_2$, and boiler load. The fuels used in this experiment were 0.5 B-C, and 5 kinds of 0.5 B-C/water emulsified fuels. The combustion characteristics of heavy oil and its emulsions with water were investigated in an industrial boiler. The combustion stability was monitored and exhaust gases such as CO, NOx, SOx and smoke were measured with excess $O_2$ and combustion load. In case of emulsified fuel combustion, flame stability was poor and boiler efficiency was lowered by 1.6~5.7%, but emission levels of CO and smoke were improved.

  • To achieve efficient combustion within a manageable length, a successful fuel injection scheme must provide rapid mixing between the fuel and airstreams. The aim of the present numerical research is to investigate the mixing enhancement combustion phenomena according to fuel injector location near the cavity in supersonic flow. Fuel injector location changes the actual length to depth ratio of the cavity in the supersonic combustor. Therefore fuel injector location near the cavity effects different fuel/air mixing efficiency and combustion efficiency.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyse and compare the fuel combustion characteristics between LPG and gasoline on SI engine. Pressures of combustion chamber were measured on the state that engine speed was 2000rpm and BMEP was 2.0bar And we measured pressures of combustion chamber regarding variation of the MBT We could know that the combustion pressure of LPG fuel use engine is appeared lower than that of gasoline fuel use engine. At the lean mixture ratio area we could blow that Ignition timings are pulled very forward, and ignition timing of LPG fuel is advanced to $5\sim12^{\circ}$ CA than gasoline fuel. We learned that the value of coefficient of variation of LPG fuel is higher than gasoline fuel.

  • Improving furnace efficiency is a high priority need for aluminum, glass, steel and other metal casting industries. Oxy-fuel combustion is considered to be one of the most effective method to improve thermal efficiency and reduce $NO_x$, SOx and $CO_2$ emissions for high temperature furnaces. The characteristics of an oxy-fuel flame, in particular its shape, radiation profile and exhaust gas composition are considerably different to those of an air-fuel burner. For this reason, a new approach is needed regarding factors such as burner design, power input levels, number and positioning strategies of burners and also control philosophies. In this paper will discuss the latest developments of high performance oxy-fuel combustion reheating furnace system. This high performance oxy-fuel combustion system will be shown to be technologically superior to other types of combustion systems in the areas of fuel efficiency, emissions and productivity.
