In this study, the rotary bending fatigue test was carried out with two kinds of base metal, martensite stainless steel STR3 and austenite stainless steel STR35 and the dissimilar friction welded material with them. To compare the fatigue fifes according to the notch positions, the small circular defect was worked on the bonded line, 1.0mm and 0.5mm distance form the bonded line. The fatigue limits of the STR3 and STR35 base metal were 429.0MPa and 409.4MPa respectably. In comparison with fatigue life at the same notch positions, the STR35 specimens showed about 190% for base metal, 82% for 1.0mm distance notched specimens higher than that of the STR3. But the fatigue life of the 0.5mm distance notched STR35 specimen showed about 35% lower than that of the STR3 specimen. And the bonded line notched specimen was much lower fatigue life than the other specimens because of separation of the bonded line.
This paper presents the experimental examinations and statistical quantitative analysis of the correlation between the cumulative counts of acoustic emission(AE) during plastic deformation periods of the welding and the tensile strength and other properties of the tube-to-tube welded joints of O.D. 30mm (I.D 18mm) nozzle steel. This is a new approach which attempts finally to develop real-time quality monitoring system for friction welding. And this study results in practical possiblility of real-time quality control more than 100% joint efficiency showing good weld no micro structural defects.
The microstructures and mechanical properties of friction stir welded lap joints of Inconel 600 and SS 400 were evaluated; friction stir welding was carried out at a tool rotation speed of 200 rpm and welding speed of 100 mm/min. Electron back-scattering diffraction and transmission electron microscopy were introduced to analyze the grain boundary characteristics and the precipitates, respectively. Application of friction stir welding was notably effective at reducing the grain size of the stir zone. As a result, the reduced average grain size of Inconel 600 ranged from $20{\mu}m$ in the base material to $8.5{\mu}m$ in the stir zone. The joint interface between Inconel 600 and SS 400 showed a sound weld without voids and cracks, and MC carbides with a size of around 50 nm were partially formed at the Inconel 600 area of lap joint interface. However, the intermetallic compounds that lead to mechanical property degradation of the welds were not formed at the joint interface. Also, a hook, along the Inconel 600 alloy from SS 400, was formed at the advancing side, which directly brought about an increase in the peel strength. In this study, we systematically discussed the evolution of microstructures and mechanical properties of the friction stir lap joint between Inconel 600 and SS 400.

Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a solid-state process, where the objects are joined together without reaching their melting point. It has been shown that this method is a suitable way to join dissimilar aluminium alloys. The current article employed hole drilling technique to measure the residual stress distribution experimentally in different zones of dissimilar aluminium alloys AA6061-T6 and AA7075-T6 Butt welded using FSW. Results are compared with those of similar AA6061-T6 plates joined using a conventional fusion welding method called tungsten inert gas (TIG). Also, the evolution of the residual stresses in the thickness direction was investigated, and it was found that the maximum residual stresses are below the yield strength of the material in the shoulder region. It was also revealed that the longitudinal residual stresses in the joint were much larger than the transverse residual stresses. Meanwhile, Vickers micro hardness measurements were performed in the cross-section of the samples. The largest hardness values were observed in the stir zone (SZ) adjacent to the advancing side whereas low hardness values were measured at the HAZ of both alloys and the SZ adjacent to the retreating side.
Magnesium alloys are becoming important material for light weight car body, due to their low specific density but high specific strength. However they have a poor weldability, caused high oxidization tendency and low vapor temperature. In this study, the welding performance of magnesium alloys was investigated for automobile application. The materials were rolled magnesium alloy sheet contains Al and Zn such as AZ3l , AZ6l and AZ9l. Three types of welding process were studied, that were GTAW, Laser beam welding and FSW. To evaluate the weldability, we examined the appearance of welding bead. Also we checked bead shape and internal defects such as crack and porosity on cross section of welding bead. The mechanical property was measured for welded specimen by tensile test. For determination of the strength change by welding process, the hardness profile across the welding center was measured. For the results, the tensile properties of welded specimen were decreased obviously on all welding process. For the fusion welding process such as GTAW and laser beam welding, the surface of the welding bead was covered with oxidized magnesium dust but it was removed by simple cleaning work as wipe-out with tissue. Also under cut, that caused vaporization of base metal was occurred. for the friction stir welding, there was no oxidation, under-cut or internal defects. However it had poor weld performance, the reason was cleavage fracture occurred at plastic deformation zone. For welding of magnesium alloy, the laser beam welding process was recommended.
Recently drastic improvement of railway technology has been accompanied by the construction of very high-speed tracks. It should be noticed that Continuously Welded Rail(CWR) has played significant role in technical development of railway and that installation of CWR is now being scheduled on existing lines as well as newly-built lines. In general, interaction between CWR and bridge deck takes place on bridge section and additional axial force and displacement is to be developed owing to temperature and braking/acceleration forces. This interaction is known to be mainly governed by span organizations and arrangements of foot bearings. In common practice, movable bearing is stationed and designed on the assumption that it is not able to transfer the horizontal force of upper decks. However, it is well known that horizontal resistance is developed in movable bearings due to friction and that friction coefficient of movable bearing is ranged from 0.03 to 0.20 depending on the material of bearings and magnitude of reactions. Therefore, it is easily reasoned out that friction of movable bearing can influence the mutual behavior of CWR and bridge decks. Suggested in this study is to investigate the validity and efficiency of friction effect of movable bearings in controlling the axial force and displacement of CWR on continuous railway bridges.

Friction Stir Welding is a metal welding technique, in which friction heat between a welding tool and a welding material is used to weld parts at temperatures below the melting point of a material. In this study, the temperature and velocity changes in a magnesium alloy (AZ31) during the welding process were analyzed by computational flow dynamics technique while welding the material using a friction stir welding technique. For the analysis, the modeling and analysis were carried out using Fluent as a fluid analysis tool. First, the welding material was assumed to be a temperature-dependent Newtonian fluid with high viscosity, and the rotation region and the stationary region were simulated separately to consider the rotational flow generated by the rotation of the welding tool having a helical groove. The interface between the welding tool and welding material was given the friction and slip boundary conditions and the heat transfer effect to the welding tool was considered. Overall, the velocity and temperature characteristics of the welded material according to time can be understood from the results of transient analysis through the above flow analysis modeling.

When a high-energy ultrasound propagates through a solid body that contains a crack or a delamination, the two faces of the defect do not ordinarily vibrate in unison, and dissipative phenomena such as friction, rubbing and clapping between the faces will convert some of the vibrational energy to heat. By combining this heating effect with infrared imaging, one can detect a subsurface defect in material efficiently. In this paper a detection of the welding defect of thin SUS 304 plates using the UIR (ultrasonic infrared imaging) technology is described. A low frequency (20kHz) ultrasonic transducer was used to infuse the welded thin SUS 304 plates with a short pulse of sound for 280ms. The ultrasonic source has a maximum power of 2kW. The surface temperature of the area under inspection is imaged by a thermal infrared camera that is coupled to a fast frame grabber in a computer. The hot spots, which are a small area around the defect tip and heated up highly, are observed. From the sequence of the thermosonic images, the location of defective or inhomogeneous regions in the welded thin SUS 304 plates can be detected easily.
Extruded aluminium panels have been widely used for railway vehicle structures because of their light specific weight and other merit. In the past, GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) and GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) were mainly used to join aluminium panels. But recently friction stir welding (FSW) is widely used. due to its lots of advantage. In this study aluminium A6005-T6 which are used for car body structures was chosen. The influence of main parameters such as : pin rotating speed, welding speed, shoulder diameter, pin length and tilting angle on mechanical properties was examined. Optical microscope observation, micro hardness test and tensile test were carried out. Tensile strength of the stir welded plates is 74% of that of the base material.
Al-alloy is utilized widely as a light-weight material to an automobile, a vessel and many kind of equipment, due to the light-weight and its characteristics that is a good tensile strength, elongation and tenacity for bearing heavy load and weight. Al-alloy has the good property of hot working, cold working and corrosion-resistant. But the exiting fusion welding by using Al has some economical and technical problems, but on the other hand, Friction Stir Welding (FSW) that is new joining method can settle the disadvantages that occur to the fusion welding and Is being applied and extended into the various industry fields. On this study, To analyze accurately the mechanical properties of joining area by FSW in Al 6061 alloy by using finite analysis program with finite element method. The size of HAZ and the thermal distribution is simulated and the mechanical properties around the FSW joining area to the Al-alloy 6061 is examined.
