다양한 온도에서 염소가스 반응에 의해 표면 개질된 SiC의 트라이볼로지 특성평가 (Estimation of Tribological Properties on Surface Modified SiC by Chlorine Gas Reaction at Various Temperatures)

  • Carbon layers were fabricated on silicon carbide by chlorination reaction at temperatures between $1000^{\circ}C$ and $1500^{\circ}C$ with $Cl_2/H_2$ gas mixtures. The effect of reaction temperature on the micro-structures and tribological behavior of SiC derived carbon layer was investigated. Tribological tests were carried out ball-on-disk type wear tester. Carbon layers were characterized by X-ray diffractometer, Raman spectroscopy and surface profilometer. Both friction coefficients and wear rates were maintained low values at reaction temperature up to $1300^{\circ}C$ but increased suddenly above this temperature. Variation of surface roughness as a function of reaction temperature was dominant factor affecting tribological transition behavior of carbon layer derived from silicon carbide at high temperature.

  • 지오텍스타일을 포함하지 않은 토목섬유 경계면의 동적마찰저항과 전단변위속도, 그리고 여타 마찰특성의 상관성에 대한 실험적 연구를 수행하였다 변위속도 조절이 가능한, 진동대를 이용한 진동식 실험장치를 제작하여 사용하였다. 다양한 변위속도를 포함한 실험을 수행한 결과, 지오텍스타일을 포함하지 않은 토목섬유 경계면은 지오텍스타일을 포함한 토목섬유 경계면의 전단특성과 확연히 구별되는 거동을 보였다. 지오텍스타일을 포함한 토목섬유 경계면과 달리 지오텍스타일을 포함하지 않은 토목섬유 경계면의 전단 거동은 전단 변위 속도에 민감하지 않으며 강-완전소성에 근사하다는 결론을 얻었다.

Parameters study on lateral buckling of submarine PIP pipelines

  • In meeting the technical needs for deepwater conditions and overcoming the shortfalls of single-layer pipes for deepwater applications, pipe-in-pipe (PIP) systems have been developed. While, for PIP pipelines directly laid on the seabed or with partial embedment, one of the primary service risks is lateral buckling. The critical axial force is a key factor governing the global lateral buckling response that has been paid much more attention. It is influenced by global imperfections, submerged weight, stiffness, pipe-soil interaction characteristics, et al. In this study, Finite Element Models for imperfect PIP systems are established on the basis of 3D beam element and tube-to-tube element in Abaqus. A parameter study was conducted to investigate the effects of these parameters on the critical axial force and post-buckling forms. These parameters include structural parameters such as imperfections, clearance, and bulkhead spacing, pipe/soil interaction parameter, for instance, axial and lateral friction properties between pipeline and seabed, and load parameter submerged weight. Python as a programming language is been used to realize parametric modeling in Abaqus. Some conclusions are obtained which can provide a guide for the design of PIP pipelines.

  • Steel fibre reinforced concrete (SFRC) is an anisotropic material due to the random orientation of the fibres within the cement matrix. Fibres under different inclination angles provide different strength contribution of a given crack width. For that the pull-out response of inclined fibres is of great importance to understand SFRC behaviour, particularly in the case of fibres with hooked ends, which are the most widely used. The paper focuses on the numerical modelling of the pull-out response of this kind of fibres from high-strength cementitious matrix in order to study the effects of different inclination angles of the fibres to the load-displacement pull-out curves. The pull-out of the fibres is studied by means of accurate three-dimensional finite element models, which take into account the nonlinearities that are present in the physical model, such as the nonlinear bonding between the fibre and the matrix in the early stages of the loading, the unilateral contact between the fibre and the matrix, the friction at the contact areas, the plastification of the steel fibre and the plastification and cracking of the cementitious matrix. The bonding properties of the fibre-matrix interface considered in the numerical model are based on experimental results of pull-out tests on straight fibres.

Engineering behavior of expansive soils treated with rice husk ash

  • The rapid urbanization in Pakistan is creating a shortage of sustainable construction sites with good soil conditions. Attempts have been made to use rice husk ash (RHA) in concrete industry of Pakistan, however, limited literature is available on its potential to improve local soils. This paper presents an experimental study on engineering properties of low and high plastic cohesive soils blended with 0-20% RHA by dry weight of soil. The decrease in plasticity index and shrinkage ratio indicates a reduction in swell potential of RHA treated cohesive soils which is beneficial for problems related to placing pavements and footings on such soils. It is also observed that the increased formation of pozzolanic products within the pore spaces of soil from physicochemical changes transforms RHA treated soils to a compact mass which decreases both total settlement and rate of settlement. A notable increase in friction angle with increase in RHA up to 16% was also observed in direct shear tests. It is concluded that RHA treatment is a cost-effective and sustainable alternate to deal with problematic local cohesive soils in agro-based developing countries like Pakistan.

알루미늄 발포금속의 유효열전도도와 침투율의 측정 (Measurement of effective thermal conductivity and permeability on aluminum foam metal)

  • Effective thermal conductivities and pressure-drop-related properties of aluminum foam metals have been measured. The effects of porosity and cell size in the aluminum foam metal are investigated in detail. The porosity of the foam metal, considered in the present study, varies from 0.89 to 0.96 and the cell size from 0.65㎜ to 2.5㎜. The effective thermal conductivity is evaluated by comparing the temperature gradient of the foam metal with that of the thermal conductivity-known material. The pressure drop in the foam metal is measured by a highly precise electric manometer while air is flowing through the aluminum foam metal in the channel. The results obtained indicate that the effective thermal conductivities are found to be increased with a decrease in the porosity while the effective thermal conductivities ire little affected by the cell size at a fixed porosity. However, the pressure drop is strongly affected by the cell size as well as the porosity. It is seen that the pressure drop is increased as the cell size becomes smaller, as expected. The minimum pressure drop is obtained in the porosity 0.94 at a fixed cell size. A new correlation of the pressure drop is proposed based on the permeability and Ergun's coefficient for the aluminum foam metal.

TiB2 분말로 강화된 Cu-TiB2 복합재료의 내마모특성 (The Characteristics of Wear Resistance of Cu-TiB2 Composites Reinforced by TiB2 Powders)

  • In this study the effect of the content of $TiB_2$ on wear properties was investigated. $Cu-TiB_2$ composites have been fabricated by hot extrusion. Sliding wear tests were peformed by a pin-on-disk type wear test machine under dry condition and loads varied with from 20N to 80N at sliding speed 3.5Hz. The test results showed that the wear losses and the friction coefficients decreased with increasing $Cu-TiB_2$ volume fraction and increasing the size of $Cu-TiB_2$ particle. Wear property of $10{\mu}m,\;5 vol\%\; TiB_2$ specimen was excellent all of the wear specimens. It is thought that the increase of plastic flow resistivity due to uniform distribution of $10{\mu}m,\;5 vol\%\; TiB_2$ wear specimen would improve wear property. The worn surface and wear debris were examined by optical microscope and scanning electron microscope.

Numerical Investigation on Frictional Pressure Loss in a Perfect Square Micro Channel with Roughness and Particles

  • A numerical study is performed to investigate the effect of inner surface roughness and micro-particles on adiabatic single phase frictional pressure drop in a perfect square micro channel. With the variation of particles sizes (0.1 to $1{\mu}m$) and occupied volume ratio (0.01 to 10%) by particles, the Eulerian multi-phase model is applied to a $100{\mu}m$ hydraulic diameter perfect square micro channel in laminar flow region. Frictional pressure loss is affected significantly by particle size than occupied volume ratio by particles. The particle properties like density and coefficient of restitution are investigated with various particle materials and the density of particle is found as an influential factor. Roughness effect on pressure drop in the micro channel is investigated with the consideration of roughness height, pitch, and distribution. Additionally, the combination effect by particles and surface roughness are simulated. The pressure loss in microchannel with 2.5% relative roughness surface can be increased more than 20% by the addition of $0.5{\mu}m$ diameter particles.

A STUDY ON WEAR AND CORROSION RESISTANCE OF CrN$_{x}$ FILMS BY CATHODIC ARC ION PLATING PROCESS

  • $CrN_x$ films were deposited on SKD61 and S45C by cathodic arc ion plating process. In this study, the microstructure, microhardness, a hesion, wear and corrosion properties of the CrNx films were studied for various nitrogen partial pressures and the results were compared with those from the electroplated hard Cr. The crystal structure of the films was characterized by X-ray diffraction. Wear tests were performed under no lubricant condition at atmosphere by ball-on-disc type tribotester. Corrosion resistance of the films were studied by electrochemical corrosion test, measuring current demsity-potential curves. The results indicated that the $CrN_x$ films formed using ion plation method showed higer hardness and lower current density, friction coefficient than electroplated hard Cr. Consequently, the application of the CrNx coationgs by ion plating which is free of environmental pollution, is expected to improve lifetime of components in industrial practice.

Pulse electrodeposition and characterization of Ni-$TiO_2$ nano composite coatings

  • Ni $TiO_2$ nano composite coatings were fabricated by using pulse current electrodeposition technique at 100 Hz pulse frequency with a constant 50% pulse duty cycles and reference was taken with respect to the direct current electrodeposition. The properties of the composite coatings were investigated by using SEM, XRD, Wear test and Vicker's microhardness test. XRD patterns of pulse deposited composite coatings were found to be changed from preferred (100) orientation to the random mixed orientations. The results demonstrated that the Vickers microhardness of composite coatings under pulse condition was significantly improved than that of pure nickel coating as well as direct current electrodeposited Ni-$TiO_2$ composite coatings. Wear tracks have shown the less plastic deformation at pulse condition with reduced coefficient of friction. Nickel matrix grain size was also found to be lower in pulse plated composite coatings as compared to direct current electrodeposited composite coatings.
