  • In a precise control system, the Lu-Gre friction model has often been used to describe the nonlinear friction. For the XY table system with this friction model, we identified the friction parameters and designed nonlinear observer. The nonlinear friction effects could be removed within appropriate position tracking errors and control inputs through experiments. Also, we designed the nonmodel-based SMC system to compensate the nonlinear friction. Through experiments, it is shown that this method has the similar performance compared with the nonlinear observer system and is useful when friction parameters are hard to identify except the problem of input chattering.

  • This papers investigates the combined effects of parameters such as die surface finish, die directionality of stoning, contact pressure and draw speed on the resulting friction factor. Also, this study show the correlation between the NN(Neural Network) and DOE (Design of Experiments) to reduce the number of experiments without the loss of the effects of parameter upon friction factor. The experiments were run in random order with at least three replicates. It was found that the directional stoning orthogonal to the pulling direction is lower friction than directional stoning parallel to the pulling direction using FCD55 die and SPCEN

  • The effect of bronze sintered friction materials on frictional and mechanical properties is studied with the content(8~18 wt,%) and shapes (flake and irregular) of graphite that is used as solid lubricants to meet diverse characteristics such as low coefficient of friction, low wear rate and high bending strength. The content and shapes of graphite are optimized by statistical experiments. Friction test was carried out measure friction coefficient, temperature dependence and wear rate. As a result of experiments, the density, hardness and bending strength with a shape of flake graphite are lower and decrease rapidly than that of Irregular, as the content of graphite increases up to 18 wt% Aftei friction test, coefficient of friction is 0.3~0 4 and wear rate is $0.32{\sim}2.98{\times}10^{-7}cm^3/kg{\cdot}m$. When the content of graphite increases, coefficient of friction increases In a shape of flake graphite and decreases in a shape of irregular graphite.

  • A magnetic clutch consists of pulley and disk. It delivers and isolates the power needed for the operation of the compressor used in automotive air conditioning system. To improve the performance, efficiency and durability of automotive air conditioning system, appropriate design of pulley, disk and system working parameters(the magnitude of magnetic force, and so on) is necessary. For that goal, it is required to understand the friction characteristics of magnetic clutch for the initial operating time. In this study, friction tests were carried out in order to investigate the effect of sliding velocity on the friction characteristics of magnetic clutch using pin-on-disk type friction and wear tester. For experiments, pulley and disk used in real automotive air conditioning system were considered. Friction experiments were conducted under various sliding velocities, and coefficients of kinetic friction were obtained. Under the experimental conditions considered in this study, the coefficients of kinetic friction increased with the increase of test number(sliding distance) and decreased with the increase of sliding velocity.

  • Lip seals, important components in many hydraulic devices, dissipate energy through friction, resulting in power loss. This study contributes to an understanding of lip seal friction by further exploring the connections between friction behavior, viscoelastic properties of robber and viscous properties of the lubricant. Experiments haven been conducted for short stroke oscillations, where these connections are quite strong. Sliding friction experiments at a variety of pressures, temperatures and oscillation rates (for different seal materials, surface roughnesses and lubricant viscosities) are examined. Speculative explanations are suggested for conditions under which friction maxima and frictional vibrations occur.

  • In this paper, 2-axis driving mechanism, which uses voice coil motor (VCM), is proposed to measure the friction force. The proposed VCM actuator consists of two parts; structural part and magnetic circuit part. Structural part is simplified to perform the friction experiments. Magnetic circuit part is composed of two parts. The experiments are accomplished by changing the mass of moving part. Through the experiments, optimal dimension is selected. Finally, the experimental results are verified and the optimal case is applied to the 2-axis driving mechanism, optical image stabilization actuator.

  • In this study, we analyzed the stick slip characteristics through friction experiments on materials used in mechanical and electronic products, and propose improvements to reduce abnormal noise generated inside refrigerators. To analyze the stick slip phenomenon of the materials, we fabricated a friction testing device and conducted friction experiments. Additionally, we measured the vibration and noise levels of internal components to analyze the occurrence and location of abnormal noise inside the refrigerator. By comparing the results of the refrigerator's phenomenon analysis and friction experiment, we confirm that the abnormal noise occurring inside the refrigerator is caused by the stick slip phenomenon of internal components. Finally, to propose improvements for abnormal noise reduction, we performed friction experiments using the Taguchi method and validated the performance of the proposed improvements by applying them to refrigerators.

  • This paper introduces a friction compensation fuzzy logic controller, which utilizes a rule-based approach. The paper explains the algorithm of the proposed controller and compares it with a conventional PID controller in simulations and experiments. For the experiments, the two control algorithms were implemented on a 3-axis milling machine in contour milling. These simulation and experimental analyses show that the proposed fuzzy logic controller has superior performance over conventional PID controllers In terms of part contour accuracy.

  • Various types of damper are usually applied to reduce noise and vibration for mechanical systems. Especially, for washing machines, the free-friction stroke damper is installed. The behavior of the free-friction stroke damper has nonlinear characteristics such as hysteresis and viscoelastic properties because of its foam material. First of all, the dynamic experiments were carried out by using a MTS machine to find characteristics of the free-friction stroke damper. And the simulation model of the free-friction stroke damper and characteristics of a foam material were evaluated by using optimization technique. To make a good simulation model which can show the dynamic characteristics, it is important to understand the working mechanism of the damper. The Finite Element Method (FEM) technique can help us instinctively understand the damping phenomenon under operating conditions, because we can observe the condition of damper at every step in the simulation by using it. Also, by changing factors, we can comprehend the variation of characteristics of damper. So, in this paper, a study on the dynamic characteristics of free-friction stroke damper by FEM is focused on. Finally, the possibility which physical experiments can be replaced into simulations is shown.
