  • In general, a brake system of axle for heavy duty machine as a wheel excavator makes use of wettype multiple disk brakes. These disk bakes are very important parts of heavy duty machine because they are dvanced in durability and braking power, and can be designed compactly. Thus, we adesigned and made wettype multiple disk brakes of axle for the wheel excavator to be localization of these imported all. In this study, wet multiple disk brakes were made a comparative test with the 3 types materials of friction disk by the SAE No.2 dynamometer. The friction characteristics were measured and analyzed to decide a suitable material as wear depth of friction disk and dynamic and static friction coefficient on temperature of oil and applied pressure.

  • Cu-matrix sintered brake pads and low-alloy heat-resistant steel are commonly applied to basic brake systems in high-energy moving machines. In this research, we analyzed the tribological characteristics to determine the influence of the air velocity between the disk and pad. At a low brake pressure with airflow, the friction stability was decreased as a result of the lack of tribofilm formation at the disk surface. However, there were no significant changes in the friction coefficient under any of the test conditions. The wear rates of the friction materials were decreased with an increase in the airflow velocity. As a result, the airflow velocity influenced the friction stability, as well as the wear rate of the friction materials and disk, but not the friction coefficient.

  • In this study, the effects of oxide layer formed on the contact parts of TiN coated ball and steel disk on friction characteristics in various sliding conditions were investigated. AISI52100 steel ball was used for the substrate of coated ball specimens, which were prepared by depositing TiN coating with 1(m in coating thickness. AISI1045 steel was used for the disk type counter-body. To investigate the effect of oxide layer on the contact parts of two materials, the tests were performed both in air for forming oxide layer on the contact parts and in nitrogen environment to avoid oxidation. From the test results, the frictional characteristic between the two materials was predominated by iron oxide layer that formed on wear tract of counter-body and this layer caused friction transition and high friction. And the adhesive wear occurred from steel disk to TiN coated ball caused the formation of oxide layer on counter parts between the two materials.

  • The paper presents the influence of spring dynamics and friction on dynamic responses in a spring-driven cam system. The characteristics of the friction on the camshaft are analyzed using the nonlinear pendulum experiment while the parameters of the friction model are estimated using the optimization technique. The analysis reveals that the friction of the camshaft depends on stick-slip, Stribeck effect and viscous damping. Spring elements are found to have much influence on the dynamic characteristics. Hence, they are modeled as four-degree-of-freedom lumped masses with equivalent springs. The appropriateness of the derived friction model and spring model is verified by its application to a vacuum circuit breaker mechanism of the cam-follower type.

  • The effect of graphite on the frictional characteristics of Cu-based sintered friction materials was studied by pin-on-disk type wear test. A study has been carried out concerning the optimum concentration of graphite in sintered friction material to obtain the minimum wear rate and low friction coefficient . Friction coefficient and wear rate were increased as increasing the content of graphite in the matrix. In the study the optimum concentration of graphite was 19vol % to get the minimum wear rate and optimal frick'ion coefficient.

  • The feel of writing is important to customers when they buy smart devices with stylus such as smartphones and tablet computers. With an aim to reproduce the tactile sensibility of writing instruments when people write on the glass display using a stylus, this study focuses on the frequency characteristics of writing instruments that can describe the vibrations of writing instruments sliding over counter surfaces. In addition, this study includes the effect of various factors influencing the friction of writing instruments such as lubricant, nib material, and contact type. We perform sliding experiments with six types of writing instruments and a sheet of paper to understand the relation between the friction conditions of the nib and the frequency characteristics. As this research focuses on the tactile perception of human skin when people use a writing instrument, the analysis of frequency characteristics is performed in the perceptible frequency range of mechanoreceptors in the human skin. As a result, three types of frequency characteristics are identified. Low frequency peaks are observed for a metal nib with ink; high frequency peaks are observed for a nib without ink; and, middle frequency peaks with a wide range of distribution occurs for fabric nibs with ink. Therefore, to implement the proper feel of writing, at least three types of vibrations have to be made.

  • As GA(Galvannealed sheet steel, GA) has good corrosion resistance, weldability and paintability as well as excellent stamping formability it's demand is rapidly increasing for automotive panel. But the layer of the Galvannealed sheet steel is easy to have a coating layer such as powdering and flaking in the press process because it is composed of Fe-Zn alloy. Therefore, the process condition is properly required to form the surface treated sheet steel. The frictional characteristics with dies are changed according to the annealing temperature, $505^{\circ}C,\;515^{\circ}C\;and\;540^{\circ}C$ during the process. To obtain the frictional characteristics of GA sheet steel in this study, on flat friction test is conducted. The friction coefficient is compared with the variation of pressure and velocity, viscosity of lubricant at the various galvannealed temperatures.

  • In this work the friction and wear characteristics of the gray cast iron surface processed by broaching method, which is widely used in the machinery industry, were investigated. The broaching process is mainly used for mass production because it has high dimensional accuracy and processing speed, but the defects on surface can be easily generated. In order to improve the tribological characteristics, the approach was to reduce the roughness and hardness of the surface by adding a machining process to the broaching specimen. The secondary machining process using abrasive grains produces low roughness and hardness than broaching because it has high tool accuracy and removes the work hardened surface. The friction coefficient and the wear rate were assessed using a reciprocating-type tribotester to analyze the effects of surface finishing on the tribological properties. The friction tests were conducted under dry and lubricated conditions. The test results showed that the reduction of surface roughness and hardness through secondary machining process in lubricated condition improved the friction and wear characteristics. The reason why the same results did not appear in a dry condition was that wear occurred more rapidly than in lubricated condition. Thus, the positive effect of roughness and hardness of the surface obtained through the secondary machining process was not observed.

  • The parking brake is one of the essential units embedded in track driving motor for forward and backward motion of an excavator. It is composed of multi-friction discs. When the hydraulic motor stops, the multi-friction discs closely stick to the facing discs by acting of multi-spring forces. So, the friction forces generate the braking force by compressing the cylinder barrel of hydraulic motor. In this study, we combined the multi-friction discs to two kinds of spring which have different spring force, and the maximum torque measured at the rotational starting point of hydraulic motor through gradually increasing the rotational torque of load side hydraulic motor by use of 1 and 2 sheets of friction plates. And, under this experimental condition, the maximum coefficient of static friction and the characteristics of paper friction sheet were analyzed. The obtained experimental results will be applied to the design of parking brake system for producing large size excavator in the 85-ton weight class.

  • Recently, high-strength-steel sheets have been used extensively for increasing fuel-efficiency and stability in automobiles. A study on the characteristics regarding friction factors is required because high-strength-steel sheets have higher contact pressure at the tool interface as compared to low-strength steel sheets. For the current study, a sheet friction test was used to examine the influence of several factors on friction. The friction tests were performed on two types of sheet steels (SPFC590 and SPFC980) to obtain friction coefficients as a function of contact pressure, surface roughness, lubricant viscosity, and speed. Based on the experimental results for SPFC590 and SPFC980, the friction coefficient decreased with increasing contact pressure, but the friction coefficient increased with increasing surface roughness. Also, the friction coefficient decreased with increasing lubricant viscosity and decreasing speed.
