Performance of refrigerant oil at the thrust-bearing and at the journal-bearing of a scroll compressor is a significant factor. This paper presents the friction and anti-wear characteristics of nano oil with a mixture of a refrigerant oil and carbon nano particles. The characteristics of friction and anti-wear using nano-oil is evaluated using the disk on disk tester for measuring friction surface temperature and the coefficient of friction. The average friction coefficient of nano-oil was reduced by 60% compared to raw oil under 600 N and 1,000 rpm. It is believed that the interaction of nano particles between surfaces can be improved the lubrication in the friction surfaces. Worn surfaces of frictional specimen were also investigated by the optical and atomic force microscopy. Conclusively, it is expected that wear and friction coefficient of compressor can be reduced by alignment applying nano-oil as refrigerant oil.

An NAO friction material (low-steel type) containing 15 ingredients was investigated to study the role of transfer film on the friction characteristics. The friction material specimens with extra 100% of each ingredient were tested using a pad-on-disk type tribotester. A non-destructive method of measuring the transfer film was developed by considering the electric resistance of the transfer film. Results showed that solid lubricants and iron powder assisted transfer film formation on the rotor surface. Average friction coefficient was independent of transfer film thickness in this experiment. On the other hand, the thick transfer film on the rotor surface reduced the amplitude of friction oscillation under temperature conditions ( 250$^{\circ}C$) that transfer film forms.
This paper presents the friction and anti-wear characteristics of nano-oil with a mixture of a refrigerant oil and carbon nano-particles in the thrust slide-bearing of scroll compressors. Frictional loss in the thrust slide-bearing occupies a large part of total mechanical loss in scroll compressors. The characteristics of friction and anti-wear using nano-oil are evaluated using the thrust bearing tester for measuring friction surface temperature and the coefficient of friction at the thrust slide-bearing as a function of normal loads up to 4,000 N and orbiting speed up to 3,200 rpm. It is found that the coefficient of friction increases with decreasing orbiting speed and normal force. The friction coefficient of carbon nano-oil is 0.015, while that of pure oil is 0.023 under the conditions of refrigerant gas R-22 at the pressure of 5 bars. It is believed that carbon nano-particles can be coated on the friction surfaces and the interaction of nano-particles between surfaces can be improved the lubrication in the friction surfaces. Carbon nano-oil enhances the characteristics of the anti-wear and friction at the thrust slide-bearing of scroll compressors.
Frictional behavior of three automotive friction materials (brake pads) containing different amounts of antimony trisulfide ($Sb_2S_3$) and zirconium silicate ($ZRSiO_4$) were investigated using a front brake system. The friction materials were tested on a brake dynamometer (dyno) with gray cast iron rotors. The dynamometer(dyno) test simulated the dragging of a ehicle maintaining 70 km/h and vehicle stops from 100 km/h using 20 different combinations of initial brake temperature (IBT) and input pressure (IP). The results showed a strong influence of the relative amount of $Sb_2S_3$ and $ZrSiO_4$ in friction materials on friction characteristics. Friction stability was improved with the higher concentration of $Sb_2S_3$ in the friction material. Torque variation during drag cycle was increased with an increase of the $ZrSiO_4$ concentration in the friction material. Average friction coefficient and the wear rate of the friction material increased by using more aggressive friction materials containing more $ZrSiO_4$ and less $Sb_2S_3$. Generation of the disk thickness variation (DTV) increased when friction materials with higher concentration of $ZrSiO_4$ were used Careful examination of DTV change showed that aggressiveness of the friction material played an important role in determining torque variation.
Recent work with phosphate esters has shown that a lubricious polymeric film can formed from the vapor phase on interacting during and sliding. This lubrication technique has led to methods to reduce friction and wear to very low values at high temperatures up to 700$^{\circ}$C. Preliminary with synthetic tri aryl phosphates are very promising. The vaporized lubricant forms a polymeric film on the sliding and rolling surfaces reducing the coefficient of friction below 0.05. In-situ formation of the polymeric films shows that the polymer that is formed on the surface exists in different states depending on surface temperature.

Electro-magnetic clutch which is affected by elements of electric, magnetic and mechanical friction is important that it has a characteristic changes by environmental impact. Expecially, it is equipped in railroad sideway which is bleak external environment. Therefore, this paper investigated affections by temperature changes, which can make out through physical characteristics such as friction torque, minimum slipping torque, rated slipping torque of electro-magnetic dutch.
Due to thermal expansion, the structural behaviour of beams in steel structures subjected to temperature increase will be affected. This may result in the failure of the structural members or connection due to extra internal force in the beam induced by the thermal increase. A method to release some of the thermally generated internal force in the members is to allow for some movements at the end supports of the member. This can be achieved by making the plane of the end-plate of the connection slanted instead of vertical as in conventional design. The present paper discusses the mechanical behaviour of beams with bolted slant end-plate connection under symmetrical gravity loads, subjected to temperature increase. Analyses have been carried out to investigate the reduction in internal force with various angles of slanting, friction factor at the surface of the connection, and allowable temperature increase in the beam. The main conclusion is that higher thermal increase is tolerable when slanting connection is used, which means the risk of failure of structures can be reduced.
This article describes the basic technical concepts for applying the friction stir welding (FSW) process to titanium and its alloys. Titanium and its alloys are demanding applications of FSW. During FSW, a protective atmosphere is needed at the welding region to prevent the joints from oxidation due to the absorption of interstitial elements (O, N, and H) at high temperature. The process parameters for FSW have great influence on the microstructure and properties of the joints. No phase transformation occurred in CP Ti because FSW was achieved below the ${\beta}$-transus temperature. Therefore, the mechanical properties of the joints with CP Ti were governed by recrystallization and grain refinement. Furthermore, the strong crystallographic texture indicating <0001>//ND formed in the stir zone. On the other hands, the phase transformation occurred in Ti-6Al-4V alloy because the process temperature reached above ${\beta}$-transus temperature. For this reason, the mechanical properties of the joints with Ti-6Al-4V alloy were altered by not only recry stallization and grain refinement but also phase transformation during FSW. Engineers who want to get sound FSW joints with Ti-6Al-4V alloy have to pay attention to the control about process conditions.

An experimental study was peformed to measure the viscosity of microencapsulated PCM slurries as the functions of its concentration and temperature, and also influence to its fluid dynamics. For the viscosity measurement, a rotary type viscometer, which was equipped with temperature control system, was adopted. The slurry was mixed with water and Sodium Lauryl Sulphate as a surfactant by which its suspended particles were dispersed well without the segregation of particles during the experiment. The viscosity was increased as the concentration of MicroPCM particle added. The surfactant increased 5% of the viscosity over the working fluid without particles. Experiments were proceeded by changing parameters such as PCM particles'concentration as well as the temperature of working fluid. As a result, a model to the functions of temperature for the working fluid and its particle concentration is proposed. The proposed model, for which its standard deviation shows 0.8068, is agreed well with the reference's data. The pressure drop was measured by U-tube manometer, and then the friction factor was obtained. It was noted that the pressure drop was not influenced by the state of PCM phase, that is solid or liquid in its core materials at their same concentration. On the other hand, it was described that the pressure drop of the slurry was much increased over the working fluid without particles. A friction factor was placed on a straight line in all working fluids of the laminar flow regardless of existing particles as we expected.

At present it has been cleared that even carefully polished surfaces have irregularities on them which are large compared with molecular dimensions by the progress of a scanning electron microscope. When two solids are placed together, the real area of contact is very small, so that the local pressure is high and, in general, exceeds the yield pressure of the metal. Plastic flow of the solid occurs at the summits of the irregularities so that the real area of contact is proportional to the applied load. There is adhesion at local resions of contact and the friction is, in a large measure, the force required to shear them. On this view point, the friction experiment with different specimens which are carbon steel, copper and constantan was attempted to know the characteristics of temperature change in contact with different metals. Various experiments are summerized as follows; 1) With metals of high melting point, momentary 1000 .deg. C may last below $10^{-4}$ of a second. It is thought that above phenomena back up previous adhesion theory in wear. 2) As a general rule, surface temperature in contact with different metals becomes high when the load increases while it is observed that surface temperature decreases when the load increases with shapes of specimens.
