  • A bench test set-up is employed to simulate the friction characteristics of a paper-based friction material operating against a steel plate. Dry friction tests are run as well as tests with transmission fluids. Glazed friction material produces a negative coefficient of friction versus sliding velocity (f-v) curve for both dry friction and lubrication with transmission fluids. At low sliding speeds, the coefficient of friction when operating in transmission fluids for glazed friction materials is greater than that under dry friction. An appreciable negative f-v slope occurs at low sliding speeds for glazed friction materials when running with the transmission fluid. The friction material after running in produces a constant f-v curve under dry friction and a negative slope when lubricated with transmission fluid. At low sliding speeds, the coefficient of friction of the run-in friction material is lower than that of the glazed wet material. On the other hand, the run-in friction material has a larger friction coefficient than does the glazed friction material at higher sliding speeds.

  • Friction material, an integral constituent of bearing supports, facilitates frictional interactions between two components. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), a commonly employed friction material in bearing supports, has assessed resultant friction equilibrium. Nonetheless, protracted utilization diminishes frictional performance as the lubricating agent is progressively depleted. Friction materials can affect the entire structural system. Hence, this study applied ceramic material as a friction material due to its high strength, low friction, and low deformation. The frictional behavior was investigated using a cyclic friction test, considering various friction materials as the primary design variables and examining their covariance in cyclic frictional movements. The results substantiated that the ceramic friction material yielded a low variance and friction coefficients in cyclic frictional movements.

  • The effects of humidity on friction performance of automotive brake materials were studied using a pad-on-disk type friction tester. Three different friction materials based on a simple formulation were investigated by changing the solid lubricant graphite, MoS$_2$, and Sb$_2$S$_3$. Friction materials without solid lubricants were also examined to study the effect of other ingredients in the matrix on humidity. The friction material containing graphite was strongly affected by the humidity showing lower friction coefficient at high humidity level than other conditions. On the other hand, the friction material containing MoS$_2$exhibited higher friction coefficient at initial stage under high humidity level. The friction material without solid lubricant or with Sb$_2$S$_3$ was not affected by humidity conditions. However, the friction material containing barite showed strong speed dependence.

  • Friction and wear test for two kinds of Cu-based sintered metallic friction material against cast iron disk was carried out by plate-on-disk type friction and wear tester to investigate the friction and wear characteristics of brake system in severe condition. In this experimental study, the counter specimen was cast iron which is being used generally in brakes of heavy duty equipments. Test friction materials were A type which was manufactured by foreign company and B type by domestic company. Friction coefficient and wear volume were measured and compared with each other. The experiment was performed under room temperature. The worn surface of cast iron disk and friction material were observed by scanning electron microscope. The temperature of surface of disk was measured continuously by the non-contacting thermometer. It was found that A type friction material had stable friction coefficient over the wide range of sliding condition, but B type friction material had unstable friction coefficient and lower value of 0.2 under the severe sliding condition.

  • Eviction characteristics of two typical friction materials (non-asbestos organic and low-steel friction materials) for an automotive brake system were investigated using an inertial brake dynamometer. In particular, the effect of sliding speed on friction coefficient was carefully investigated employing various test modes. The two friction materials were developed for commercial applications and were different mainly in the type and the amount of metallic ingredients in the friction material. The dynamometer test showed that the low-steel friction material was sensitive to the sliding speed exhibiting a negative $\mu$-v relation. On the other hand, the non-asbestos organic friction material was less sensitive to the sliding speed. The low steel friction materials with a negative $\mu$-v relation also induced larger vibration amplitude during brake applications.

  • Tribological behavior of novolac resin-based friction materials with three different relative amounts of graphite and zirconium silicate was investigated by using a pad-on-disk type friction tester. The goal of this paper is to examine the effects of the relative amount of a lubricant and an abrasive in the automotive friction material on friction and wear characteristics at elevated temperature. Friction and wear of friction materials were affected by the existence of transfer film(3$\^$rd/ body layer) at friction interface and the composition of friction material, especially lubricant amount. The friction material with higher content of graphite indicated homogenized and durable transfer film, and resulted in stable friction coefficient regardless of the increase in friction heat. The experimental result also showed that the higher concentration of ZrSiO$_4$ in friction material aggravated friction stability and wear resistance due to the higher friction heat generated at fiction interface during high temperature friction test.

  • The essential element of brake device for railway vehicle is in demand for higher performance along side the trend of railway vehicle size and speed. Essential element of brake device for high speed train is composed of metallic friction material and brake disc. Thus, brake distance, duration and brake stability shall be determined due to friction materials and friction characteristics. Also friction characteristics are influenced by metallic friction material's properties of matter, manufacturing process and component parts. Various materials and configurations of metallic friction materials are currently being implemented to railway vehicles, For this reason study of friction characteristics in accordance with materials is necessary, but study of these important elements are not actively being accomplished. Therefore, in this study, wished to study the graphite's friction characteristic comprised in friction material in accordance with particle size and amount of volume through lab-scale test.

  • The basic principles of tribo-systems and study method based on tribe-systems are introduced in the paper, Based on the viewpoint of tribe-systems, the experiment on tribology characteristics of friction lining material in multi-rope friction hoist is carried out. The research result shows: tribology characteristics of friction material are not its inherent characteristic but system characteristics of the tribo-systems, the“sliding-rope”of multi-rope friction hoist can be divided into“safety sliding-rope”and“fault sliding-rope”, study on friction material only based on characteristic of system where friction material exists possesses practical significance.

  • Friction characteristics of a low-steel friction material were examined to investigate creep groan phenomena. The amount of three ingredients (steel fiber, $ZrSiO_4$, cashew) were changed to produce test specimens using a constrained mixture design. Tribological properties of the friction material specimens were obtained by using a 1/5 scale dynamometer. Results showed that the amount of three different ingredients strongly affected the level of friction coefficient and the difference between the static friction coefficient and the kinetic friction coefficient $({\Delta}{\mu}).\;ZrSiO_4$ and steel fiber tended to increase the average friction coefficient and aggravated the stick-slip phenomena suggesting high creep groan propensity. On the other hand, cashew tended to decrease average friction coefficient and ${\Delta}{\mu}$.
