The biosorptlon perFormances of copper were Investigated by the immobilized biomass of nonliving marine brown algae Undaria pinnatifida by each of the Ca-alginate method(Ca-ALG), Ba-alginate method(Ba-ALG), polyethylene glycol method(PEG), and carrageenan method (CARR). The copper removal performance increased but the copper uptake decreased as the biomass amount was increased. However, the copper uptake by the immobilized biomass increased with increasing initial copper concentration. Among the immobilization methods, the copper uptake decreased in the following sequence: Ca-ALG > Ba-ALG > PEG > CARR. The pattern of copper uptake by the immobilized biomass fitted the Langmuir isotherm better than the Freundlich isotherm. Desorption of deposited copper with 0.05 ~0.5M HCI, resulted in no changes of the copper uptake capacity of the immobilized biomass by the immobilization methods except for PEG, through five subsequent biosorptioydesorption cycles. There was no damage to the immobilized biomass which retained its macroscopic appearance in repeated copper uptake/elution cycles.
Removal of Cu(II), Cr(III) and Pb(II) ions from aqueous solutions using the adsorption process on the loesses has been investigated. Variations of contact time, pH, adsorption isotherms and selectivity of coexisting ions were experimental parameters. pH of KJ and YIK samples diluted to 1% solution, was rearly the same with each value of pH 5.58 and 5.49, and both samples showed weak acidic properties. From chemical analysis, both samples contain remarkably different amounts of ${SiO}_{2}$, ${Al}_{2}O_{3}$ and ${Fe}_{2}O_{3}$. From XRD measurement, quartz was mainly observed in both samples. Kaolinite was also observed, also in both samples, but Feldspar was only observed in KJ sample. Adsorption of metal ions on the loesses were reached at equilibrium by shaking for about 30min. The adsorption of Cr(III) ion was higher than that of Cu(II) oand Pb(II) ions. The order of amount adsorbed among the investigated ions was Cr(III)>Pb(II)>Cu(II). In acidic solution, the adsorptivity of loesses was increased as pH increased. The adsorption of Cr(III) ion on the loesses were fitted to the Freundlich isotherms. Freundlich constants(1/n) of KJ and YIK loesses were 0.54 and 0.55, respectively.
Removal of Pb(Ⅱ), Cu(Ⅱ), Cr(Ⅲ), and Zn(Ⅱ) ions from aqueous solutions using the adsorption process on domestic loess minerals has been investigated. Variations of contact time, pH, adsorption isotherms and selectivity of coexisting ions and leachate were experimental parameters. YDI, YPT and KRT samples diluted in 1% aquous solution which was adjusted pH 10.8, 8.0 and 6.50, respectively. The result of XRD measurement, Quartz was mainly observed in all samples. In the case of KRT sample, Kaolinite, Feldspar, Chlorite consisting of clay minerals shows almost same pattern with YPT samples. Different properties showed from the YDI sample containing Iillite, remarkably. For all the metals, maximum adsorption was observed at 30min∼60min. Adsorption of metal ions on loess minerals were reached an equilibrium by shaking the solution for about 30min. Removal efficiency of Pb(Ⅱ) ion for KRT, YPT and YDI were 84.7%, 92% and 100%, respectively. The Cu(Ⅱ) and Zn(Ⅱ) adsorptivity on KRT showed the low in various pH solution However, those on YPT and YDI were high than 90% except for the pH 2 solution. The orders of adsorptivities for domestic loess minerals showed as following : YPT>KRT>YDI. The adsorption isotherms of Cu(Ⅱ) and Zn(Ⅱ) ions on clay minerals were fitted to a Freundlich's. Freundlich constants(1/n) of KRT and YPT domestic loess minerals were 0.63, 0.97 and 0.36, 0.25, respectively.
This study was performed to Investigate the utilization of waste concretes for neutralization and removal of heavy metals In plating wastewater, because waste concretes have been known to be very porous, to have high species surface area and to have alkaline minerals such as calcium. The results obtained from this research showed that waste concretes had a buffer capacity to neutralize an acidic alali system in plating wastewater. Generally, neutralization and removal rate of heavy metals were excellent in the increase of waste concrete amounts and a small size. Because a coefficient of correlation was high, it seemed that removal of heavy metals could be explained by Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms. If we reflected the adsorption capacity(k) and adsorption intensity(1/n) of Freundlich isotherm, we couldn't consider waste concretes as a good adsorbent. But, we could know that waste concretes were capable of removing a part of heavy metals. In point of building waste debris, if waste concretes substituted for a valuable adsorbent such as actuated carbon, they could look forward to an expected economical effect.
In this study, cow tibial from cow bone, a kind of beef waste, sintered at $800\sim850^{\circ}C$ for three hours was used to measure its removal capacity for metal ions such as Pb, Cd and Zn in a single and a multi-component equilibrium systems. The sorption equilibrium data were analyzed as measured by the effect of media on lead, cadmium and zinc sorption. This analysis shows that the sorption of metal ions for multi-component systems applying IAST can be predicted more reasonably by the Freundlich and the Sips theory than the Langmuir.
The adsorption equilibrium properties of bovine serum albumin(BSA-protein) for three kinds of porous microgels with different physical and chemical features were investigated. The adsorption amount of BSA-protein on poly(butyl methacrylate)(PBMA) microgels was higher than those on poly(vinyl pyridine)(PVP) and poly(acrylonitrile) (PAN) microgels due to the hydrophobic interaction between polymer and protein in an aqueous solution. And PBMA microgels had more irreversible adsorption equilibrium properties the PVP and PAN microgels. It implies that hydrophobic interaction plays a more important role in adsorption properties of BAS-protein than physical properties of polymer and electrostatic attraction between protein and polymer microgels. Characteristics of the microgels used in this study followed Langmuir equation better than the Freundlich equation.
Veterinary antibiotics can enter the soil ecosystem and then may be transported into groundwater via leaching process. The main aim of this study is to investigate the distribution and mobility of tetracycline, amoxicillin and sulfathiazole in soil. The adsorption of veterinary antibiotics were applied to the Freundlich adsorption isotherms. Adsorption coefficient ($K_F$) was indicated oxytetracycline > amoxicillin > sulfathiazole. Oxytetracycline concentration was highly detected in soil than in leachate. It is assumed that oxytetracycline was strongly absorbed by divalent cations such as $Ca^{2+}$ in soil. However, amoxicillin and sulfathiazole were shown higher mobility due to the lower distribution coefficient.
Water pollution means that the physical, chemical and biological properties of water are changing. In this study, adsorption was chosen as the treatment method because it is an eco-friendly and low cost approach. Magnetite is a magnetic material that can synthesize chemical precipitation. Magnetite was used for the removal of copper in artificial water samples. For this purpose, metal removal from water dependent on the pH, initial concentration of metal, amount of adsorbent and effect of sorption time were investigated. Magnetite was characterized using XRD, SEM and particle size distribution. The copper ions were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. The adsorption of copper on the magnetite was studied in a batch process, with different aqueous solutions of Cu (II) at concentrations ranging from 10 to $50mg\;l^{-1}$. Optimum conditions for using magnetite were found to be concentration of $10mg\;L^{-1}$, pH: 4.5, contact time: 40 min. Optimum adsorbent was found to be 0.3 gr. Furthermore, adsorption isotherm data were analyzed using the Langmuir and Freundlich equations. The adsorption data fitted well with the Freundlich ($r^2=0.9701$) and Langmuir isotherm ($r^2=0.9711$) equations. Kinetic and equilibrium aspects of the adsorption process were studied. The time-dependent Cu (II) adsorption data were described well by a pseudo-second-order kinetic model.
Hexavalent chromium [Cr (VI)] adsorption on lateritic soil and lateritic soil blended with black cotton (BC) soil, marine clay and bentonite clay were studied in the laboratory using batch adsorption techniques. In the present investigation the natural laterite soil was blended with 10%, 20% and 30% BC soil, marine clay and bentonite clay separately. The interactions on test soils have been studied with respect to the linear, Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms. The linear isotherm parameter, Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm parameters were determined from the batch adsorption tests. The adsorption of Cr (VI) on natural laterite soil and blended laterite soil was determined using double beam spectrophotometer. The distribution coefficients obtained were 1.251, 1.359 and 2.622 L/kg for lateritic soil blended with 10%, 20% and 30% BC soil; 5.396, 12.973 and 48.641 L/kg for lateritic soil blended with marine clay and 5.093, 8.148 and 12.179 L/kg for lateritic soil blended with bentonite clay respectively. The experimental data fitted well to the Langmuir model as observed from the higher value of correlation coefficient. Soil pH and iron content in soil(s) has greater influence on Cr (VI) adsorption. From the study it is concluded that laterite soil can be blended with clayey soils for removing Cr (VI) by adsorption.
The adsorption of 2-Chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-(isopropylamino)-s-trazine (Atrazine) and 2-Chloro-2' 6' diethyl-N(methoxymethyl)acetanilide(Alachlor) by 21 Korean surface soils is studied and discussed in relation to some properties of soils. 1. Adsorption of Atrazine was correlated posisively with content of clay and organic matter, but negatively with extractable potassium content and sand content. 2. Adsorption of Alachlor was correlated positively with organic matter, caly content and CEC, but negatively with sand content 3. Isothermal adsorpsion of Alachlor was confirmed to the Freundlich eguation.
