  • RCS effects of long-crested wave surfaces to marine targets are numerically analyzed using a 4-path model and a direct analysis method, developed based on physical optics and a combined method of physical optics/geometric optics, respectively. Reflectivity of long-crested wave surfaces is described with 'Fresnel reflection coefficients' The MPM(modified Pierson-Moskowitz) ocean spectrum is adopted to simulate long-crested waves in the direct analysis method. A numerical analysis of a benchmark model assures the validity of both methods. The direct analysis method is applied to the RCS calculation of electromagnetically large marine targets, which are vertically oriented or slanted to the long crested wave surfaces randomly generated with various significant wave heights. The long-crested wave surface much highly increases the RCS of the marine target, but those effects are decreased as the significant wave height grows up. At low elevation angle, the vertical model has entirely high RCS comparing slanted model, and the RCS of vertical flat plate is the highest on the calm sea surface, while those of slanted flat plates are the lowest on the calm sea surface. The RCS of marine targets on continuously-varying sea surface is more coherent at lower elevation angles, as well.

  • In this study, two fiber-optic sensors were fabricated to measure water level and temperature using optical fibers, a coupler, a Lophine and an OTDR (optical time-domain reflectometer). First, using Fresnel's reflection generated at the distal-ends of each optical fiber, which was installed at different depth, we measured the water level according to the variation of water level. Next, we also measured the temperature of water using a temperature sensing probe based on the Lophine, whose absorbance changes with the temperature. The measurable temperature range of the fiber-optic sensor is from $5^{\circ}C$ to $65^{\circ}C$ because the maximum operation temperature of the optical fiber without a physical deterioration is up to $80^{\circ}C$.

  • This paper proposes a method of moments(MoM)/Monte-Carlo simulation and Physical Optics(PO) model to determine Bistatic Coherent Reflectivity of sea surfaces at various wind speeds. For the MoM simulation, a Gaussian random rough sea surface was generated based on the data of Tae-An ocean at various wind speeds and sea surface heights. The numerical results of the MoM/Monte Carlo simulations were used to verify the validity region of the PO model. It was found that the numerical result for a flat surface agrees quite well with the Fresnel reflection coefficient. The validity of the PO model on the rough sea surface is shown by using ray tracing method.

  • We present a design and optical simulation of a cost-effective hybrid daylighting/LED system composed of mixing sunlight and light-emitting diode (LED) illumination powered by renewable solar energy for indoor lighting. In this approach, the sunlight collected by the concentrator is split into visible and non-visible rays by a beam splitter. The proposed sunlight collector consists of a Fresnel lens array. The non-visible rays are absorbed by the solar photovoltaic devices to provide electrical power for the LEDs. The visible rays passing through the beam splitters are coupled to a stepped thickness waveguide (STW) by tilted mirrors and confined by total internal reflection (TIR). LEDs are integrated at the end of the STW to improve the lighting quality. LEDs’ light and sunlight are mixed in the waveguide and they are coupled into an optical fiber bundle for indoor illumination. An optical sensor and lighting control system are used to control the LED light flow to ensure that the total output flux for indoor lighting is a fixed value when the sunlight is inadequate. The daylighting capacity was modeled and simulated with a commercial ray tracing software (LighttoolsTM). Results show that the system can achieve 63.8% optical efficiency at geometrical concentration ratio of 630. A required accuracy of sun tracking system achieved more than ±0.5o . Therefore, our results provide an important breakthrough for the commercialization of large scale optical fiber daylighting systems that are faced with challenges related to high costs.

  • We developed a 2-channel fiber-optic temperature sensor (FOTS) using a temperature sensing probe, a fiber-optic coupler, transmitting optical fiber, and an optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR). The temperature sensing probe is divided into a sensing probe and a reference probe for accurate thermometry. A sensing probe is composed of a silicon oil, a FC terminator, a brass pipe, and a singlemode optical fiber and the structure of a reference probe is identical with that of the sensing probe excluding a silicon oil. In this study, we measured the modified optical powers of the light signals reflected from the temperature sensing probe placed inside of the water with a thermal variation from 5 to $70^{\circ}C$. Although the optical power of the reference probe was constant regardless of the temperature change, the optical power of the sensing probe decreased linearly as the temperature increased. As experimental results, the FOTS using a subtraction method showed a small difference (i.e., hysteresis) in its response due to heating and cooling. The reversibility and reproducibility of the FOTS were also evaluated.

  • We propose a new photorefractive demultiplexer(DMUX) which can select the 16 channel signal in WDM optical communication system using the wavelength selectivity and the demultiplexing property through multiple recording of holographic volume grating in photorefractive Fe-LiNbO$_{3}$ crystal. For the multiple writing of the 16 channels having uniform diffraction efficiency, the rotation multiplexing technique and the exposure time schedule are used. Designed DMUX has the 16 channels with 0.5nm spacing between 670nm and 677.5nm and the bandwidth of 0.16nm. From the experimental results, the diffraction efficiency of each channel is 8.3 $\pm$0.62%, the optical loss from fresnel reflection and absorption on the crystal is 0.4cm-1, the 3㏈ bandwidth is 0.16 $\pm$0.005nm and the channel spacing is 0.46~0.5nm.

  • Vertical LED (VLED) has been recognized as a way to obtain the high-power LED due to their advantages [1]. However, approximately 4% of the light generated from the active region is extracted, if the light extraction from side walls and back side is neglected because of Fresnel reflection (FR) and total internal reflection (TIR) [2,3]. In this study, the optical simulation of the VLED with the various microstructures was performed. Among them, the microlens having the diameter of 3 ${\mu}m$ and the height of 1.5 ${\mu}m$ shown the best result was chosen, and then, optimized microlens was formed on a GaN template using conventional semiconductor process. Various microstructures were proposed to improve the light extraction efficiency (LEE) of the VLED for the simulation. The LEE was simulated using LightTools based on a Monte Carlo ray tracing. The microstructures with hemisphere, cone, truncated and cylinder pattern having diameter of 3 ${\mu}m$ were employed on the top layer of the VLED respectively. The improvement of the LEE by using the microstructure is 87% for the hemisphere, 77% for the cone, 53% for the truncated, 21% for the cylinder, compared with the LEE of the flat surface at the reflectance of 85%. The LEE was increased by 88% at the height of 1.5 ${\mu}m$, compared with the LEE of the flat surface. We found that the microlens on the top layer is the most suitable for increasing the LEE. In order to apply the proposed microlens on n-GaN surface, we fabricated microlens on a GaN template. A photoresist array having hexagonal-closed packed microlens was fabricated on the GaN template. Then, optimization of etching the GaN template was performed using a dry etching process with ICP-RIE. The dry etching carried out using a gas mixture of Cl2 and Ar, each having a flow rate of 16 sccm and 10 sccm, respectively with RF power of 50 W, ICP power of 900 W and chamber pressure of 2 mTorr was the optimum etching condition as shown in Fig. 2(a).

  • In this study, LiDAR-detectable black materials are synthesized by coating and reduction of titanium dioxide onto plate-type natural mica, which evaluated practical LiDAR verification. In detail, black TiO2@Mica materials are fabricated by utilizing a sol-gel reaction to coat titanium dioxide onto natural mica, followed by reduction using sodium tetrahydridoborate. Subsequently, Black TiO2@Mica materials are dispersed in hydrophilic transparent varnish and sprayed onto the glass substrate to assess applicability as paints. As a result, Black TiO2@Mica-based paints exhibit true blackness (L*=12.1) and a higher NIR reflectance (30.2 R%). In addition, it was confirmed that as-synthesized Black TiO2@Mica materials are successfully recognized by a LiDAR sensor. This phenomenon is attributed to Fresnel's reflection law, in which light reflection occurs at the interface between natural mica and titanium dioxide with different refractive indices. In this regard, the findings of the study are expected to contribute to the potential utilization of LiDAR-detectable materials in various fields such as autonomous vehicles, robotics, and drones.

  • In this study, LiDAR-detective black material is synthesized by recycling silicon sludge (SS) that is generated from semiconductor manufacturing process, and its recognition is confirmed using two types of LiDAR sensors (MEMS and Rotating LiDAR). In detail, metal impurities on the surface of SS is removed, followed by coating of titanium dioxide (TiO2) and subsequent chemical reduction to obtain SS-derived black TiO2 (SS/bTiO2) material. As-prepared SS/bTiO2 is mixed with transparent paint to prepare hydrophilic black paints and applied to a glass substrate using a spray gun. SS/bTiO2-based paint shows similar blackness (L*=15.7) compared to commercial carbon black-based paint, and remarkable NIR reflectance (26.5R%, 905nm). Furthermore, MEMS and Rotating LiDAR have successfully detected the SS/bTiO2-based paint. This is attributed to the occurrence of high reflection of light at the interface between the black TiO2 and the silicon sludge according to the Fresnel's reflection principle. Hence, the new application field to effectively recycle silicon sludge generated in the semiconductor manufacturing process has been presented.
