  • Total organic carbon(TOC), Total nitrogen(TN), and carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes were measured in the sediment and suspended parties in fresh lake water and saline estuarine water to determine the sources of Particulate organic matter(POM) in the sediments of the Youngsan river estuary. POM in the freshwater discharge water was mostly phytoplankton origin with little trace of terrestrial plants. POM from phytoplankton blooms formed in estuarine water in response to the nutrient enriched freshwater discharges was the most important sources of POM in the sediment near the dike, comprising more than 40% of the total organic matter. POM from freshwater phytoplankton and oceanic phytoplankton were also important sources of the sediment POM, and their contributions varied with the distances from the dike. Contribution of freshwater phytoplankton to sediment POM decreased from the dike to the outside of the estuary.

  • Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs) is one of major toxic pollutants in marine environments, This artificial chlorinated compound has been found in freshwater, seawater, soil, sediments and organismes living in various environments. Because of its toxicity and degradability, its uses in industrial processes have been banned after 1984 in Korea. Coastal area is an important environment for agriculture, industry, transportation, reduction of pollution loads through biogeochemical processes, cycling of nutrients and recreation. Input of pollutants from land and freshwater has been occurring through runoff, rivers and estuaries. Concentrations of PCBs were determined with GC-ECD. Concentrations of PCBs were in the range of 1.0 - 19.2 ng/g-dry weight of sediment(g-d.w.) at Ulsan, 4.5 -8,2 ng/g-d.w. at Onsan, 2.7 - 33.5 ng/g-d.w. at Masan and 4.0 - 60.7 ng/g-d.w. in Kwangyang, In Inchon area, PCBs were not detected in sediments. In sediments of Nakdong estuary, the distribution of PCBs' concentrations was 0.19 - 303 ng/g-d.w.

  • In Korea, the chemical oxygen demand($COD_{sed}$) in freshwater sediments has been measured by the potassium permanganate method used for marine sediment because of the absence of authorized analytical method. However, this method has not been fully verified for the freshwater sediment. Therefore, the use or modification of the potassium permanganate method or the development of the new $COD_{sed}$ analytical method may be necessary. In this study, two modified $COD_{sed}$ analytical methods such as the modified potassium permanganate method for $COD_{Mn}$ and the modified closed reflux method using potassium dichromate for $COD_{Cr}$ were compared. In the preliminary experiment to estimate the capability of the two oxidants for glucose oxidation, $COD_{Mn}$ and $COD_{Cr}$ were about 70% and 100% of theoretical oxygen demand(ThOD), respectively, indicating that $COD_{Cr}$ was very close to the ThOD. The effective titration ranges in $COD_{Mn}$ and $COD_{Cr}$ were 3.2 to 7.5 mL and 1.0 to 5.0 mL for glucose, 4.3 to 7.5 mL and 1.4 to 4.3 mL for lake sediment, and 2.5 to 5.8 mL and 3.6 to 4.5 mL for river sediment, respectively, within 10% errors. For estimating $COD_{sed}$ recovery(%) in glucose-spiked sediment after aging for 1 day, the mass balances of the $COD_{Mn}$ and $COD_{Cr}$ among glucose, sediments and glucose-spiked sediments were compared. The recoveries of $COD_{Mn}$ and $COD_{Cr}$ were 78% and 78% in glucose-spiked river sediments, 91% and 86% in glucose-spiked lake sediments, 97% and 104% in glucose-spiked sand, and 134% and 107% in glucose-spiked clay, respectively. In conclusion, both methods have high confidence levels in terms of analytical methodology but show significant different $COD_{sed}$ concentrations due to difference in the oxidation powers of the oxidants.

  • A diffusion - precipitation method was developed to determine acid volatile sulfide (AVS) concentrations in freshwater sediments. This method uses silver nitrate as a sulfide trap solution and the concentration of trapped sulfide is determined gravimetrically. The proposed diffusion - precipitation method is more rapid and less expensive than previously developed purge- and - trap methods. Spiked sodium sulfide recoveries using this method $(97\~120\%)$ were similar with a previously developed diffusion - absorption method $(93.8\~115\%)$ and about $20\%$ greater than a previously developed purge-and-trap method $(74.6\~105\%)$. Detection limit of this method $(0.1\;{\mu}mole\;S\;g^{-l})$ was comparable with that of diffusion-absorption method $(0.06\;{\mu}mole\;S\;g^{-l})$ and purge-and-trap method $(0.05\~0.5\;{\mu}mole\;S\;g^{-l})$.

  • The characteristics of trace metals were investigated in the sediments of the Mokpo coastal area, southwestern coast of Korea. Surface sediments were collected in September 3, 2002 after a strong rain event. The sampling sites were categorized into the inner and outer harbour based on salinity distribution and difference of trace metal concentration was evidence between these two zones. The enrichment factor (E' F) of Zn and Cr were high at the mouth of Mokpo Harbour and $E \cdot F$ of Cu was high at the east-south of Dali Island. One hundred percent of Mn and Pb samples and $40\%$ of Zn samples had E' F higher than 1 suggesting that they are accumulated in the entire outer of Mokpo Harbour. Trace metals appeared to be accumulated in the inner harbour by input of sediments in the discharged freshwater from Young-San River during strong rainfall whereas they were influenced by natural sedimentation and human activities in part.

  • The regiospecific potential for the reductive dechlorination of 2-, 3-, 4-, 2, 3-, 2, 4-, and 3, 4-chlorophenols (CPs) was studied in mono- and di-CP(DCP) adapted sediment slurries(10% solids). Freshwater sediments adapted to transform 2-CP dechlorinated all tested mono- and di-CPs except 4-CP without a lag period. Adaptation to 2-CP, thus, enhanced the onset of dechlorination of 3-CP and all ortho-substituted CPs tested. Sediment adapted to transform 3-CP dechlorinated all test CPs, except 4-CP and 2, 4-DCP, without a lag period. Sediment adapted to individual DCPs (2, 3-, 2, 4-, and 3, 4-DCP_ exhibited dechlorination(no lag phase) of 2-CP, 2, 3-, 2, 4-, and 3, 4-CDP. Interestingly, meta-cleavage of 3, 4-DCP in all tested adapted sediment occurred, while para-cleavage occurred in 3, 4-DCP adapted sediment. Sediment adapted to dechlorinate ortho and meta-chlorines exhibited a preference for meta following ortho-cleavage, but not for para-cleavage, while the preference for reductive dechlorination was ortho>meta>para for mono-CPs and ortho>para>meta for DCPs in unadapted freshwater anoxic sediments.

  • The results of radioecological monitoring of the cooling pond Beloyarsk NPP (Russia) have been presented. The influence of waste technological waters of thermal and fast NPP reactors on the content of artificial radionuclides in surface waters and bottom sediments of the Beloyarsk reservoir has been studied. The long-term dynamics of the specific activity of 60Co, 90Sr, 137Cs and 3H in the main components of the freshwater ecosystem at different distances from the source of radionuclide discharge has been estimated. Critical radionuclides (60Co and 137Cs), routes of their entry and periods of maximum discharge of radioisotopes into the cooling pond have been determined. It is shown that the technology of electricity generation at Beloyarsk NPP, based on fast reactors, has a much smaller effect on the flow of artificial radionuclides into the freshwater ecosystem of the reservoir. During the entire period of monitoring studies, the decrease in the specific activity of radionuclides from NPP origin in surface waters was 4.3-74.5 times, in bottom sediments 10-505 times. The maximum discharge of artificial radionuclides into the reservoir was noted during the period of restoration and decontamination work aimed at eliminating emergencies at the AMB thermal reactors of the first stage of the Beloyarsk NPP.

  • Pyrite ($FeS_2$) content in brackish and salt marsh sediments is relatively higher than the amount in freshwater marsh sediments. Different values of pyrite sulfur ($FeS_2$-S) content in sediments from the Hiroshima Delta indicate that poorly drained salt marsh had developed between 27.0m and 28.0m below mean sea-level and palaeo-sea-level was constant for several hundreds of years in the same depth during the early Holocene Epoch.

  • The genus Prionchulus Cobb, 1916 represents a group of predaceous nematodes belonging to the family Mononchidae Chitwood, 1937, and is found worldwide. However, only five species have been reported thus far from Korea. Prionchulus oleksandri Winiszewska and Susulovsky, 2003 is reported for the first time from Korea, from sediments collected from the Nakdong River. This species is distinguished from other Prionchulus species by its truncated lip region with small cephalic papillae and refringens vaginae. In this study, morphological characters(detailed morphometrics) of P. oleksandri are described and illustrated using optical microscopy. DNA barcode sequence information (the D2-D3 region of 28S rDNA, 18S rDNA, and internal transcribed spacer rDNA) is also provided for the molecular identification of the species.

  • To collect the diatom species belonging to the genus Hantzschia, bottom sediments were collected from 32 sampling sites in 23 sand-flat areas in the intertidal zone and river reaches of Nakdong River estuary, Korea. The sand sediments contained a total of 19 species of genus Hantzschia, Hantzschia amphioxys (Ehrenberg) Grunow, H. amphioxys f. capitata O. Muller, H. baltica Simonsen, H. distinctepunctata (Hustedt) Hustedt, H. elegantula (Østrup) Witkowski et al., H. longiareolata Garcia-Baptista, H. marina (Donkin) Grunow, H. pseudomarina Hustedt, H. virgata (Roper) Grunow, H. virgata var. gracilis Hustedt, H. virgata var. kariana Grunow, H. virgata var. leptocephala Østrup and H. weyprechtii Grunow, including six unconfirmed species. Eleven Hantzschia species are reported as new to Korea. Hantzschia virgata, its infraspecies, and neighboring speceis showed large morphological variations within a single species or among the closely related species. Hantzschia amphioxys, H. distinctepunctata, and H. virgata var. leptocephala prefer freshwater habitats in the upper reaches of the river, while others occurred mainly in the sand flats composed of coarse sand in the intertidal area. In the estuarine sediments, the Hantzschia taxa are classified to be typical sand-attached forms.
