Reduction of Autochthonous Organics in Masan Bay using a Simple Box Model (마산만의 자생 유기물 저감을 위한 단순 박스모델의 적용)

  • Simple box budgets models are useful tools to understand the phenomena of natural system and to provide an insight into the complex processes including physical, chemical and biological processes occurring in natural system. Budgets of fresh water, salt and nutrients were estimated in order to clarify the characteristics of seasonal material cycle in the Masan Bay. Outflow volume of freshwater into system was approximately $307.4\times10^3\sim1,210\times10^3\;m^3/day$. Inflow masses of DIP and DIN were approximately $410.8\sim795.7\;kg/day$ and $4081.4\sim6525.3\;kg/day$, respectively. DIN is expected to accumulate in the system. The removal of nutrients from bottom sediments will contribute to the reduction of 21.0% of COD concentration in the system.

  • The Korean Peninsula, jutting southward from the Asian mainland into the Pacific Ocean, is surrounded by numerous bays and islands on three sides. The study area of this research is the coastal area surrounding the Sacheon Bay, which is located in the mid-southern tip of the peninsula. Historically, the bay region took the role of the main gate leading to the western part of Kyung-nam Do(Province) due to the fact that the bay is the nearest coast to Chinju, the central city of the province. The Sacheon Bay had provided important sea routes from the old days until the early twentieth century. Because of the bay's sea routes, the bay region has been militarily of great significance. Recently, road/rail/highway/airplane transportation functions have become gradually increased but sea transportation function has been decreased in the region. As the Sacheon Bay was rich in fishery resources, dozens of fishing villages in the bay region depended on fishery and marine product industries for long years. But the inflow of the fresh water used to cause serious damage to the fishing industry in the bay region after a drainage canal from the Nam River was constructed in 1969. As a result, the industry has dwindled gradually for last decades. Recently, a couple of industrial parks were constructed along the coast and many manufacturing factories were built on the parks. It has been expected that many jobs lost in fishery and agriculture are replaced by new opportunities in industry. More than half of the workers employed in the parks' factories commute from the city of Chinju. It is asserted in this paper that the transportation, fishery, manufacturing, and tourism functions of the Sacheon Bay region are closely associated with. The characteristics of the region can be well understood through the functional changes and associations.

Planktic Foraminiferal Assemblages of Core Sediments from the Korea Strait and Paleoceanographic Changes (대한해협 코아 퇴적물의 부유성 유공충 군집 특성과 고해양 환경 변화)

  • The paleoceanography since 14 ka was reconstructed based on the planktic foraminiferal assemblages of core sediments from the outer shelf of the Korea Strait. Planktic foraminifera in the core sediments can be divided into four assemblages: A, B, C, and D. Assemblage A consists mainly of Globigerinoides ruber group and Globigerinoides conglobatus with low abundance (less than 10%), indicating the tropical-subtropical water mass. Assemblage B is composed of Pulleniatina obliquiloculata and Neogloboquadrina dutertrei, the indicator of Kuroshio Current, and shows the aspect of the inflow of the Tsushima Current into the Korea Strait. Assemblage C yields polar-subpolar species, mainly Neogloboquadrina incompta and N. pachyderma. It decreases upward of the core. Assemblage D contains coastal water species such as Globigerina bulloides and G. quinqueloba. It is abundant in the lower to middle region of the core. From the analysis of distributions of each assemblage and the result of age datings in the core, it is suggested that the Korea Strait played a role of channelling the East China Sea and the East Sea after the LGM (ca. 14 ka). During this time, the coastal water, affected by fresh waters originated from the river systems of China and/ or the Korean Peninsula, flourished around the Korea Strait and theses coastal water might entered to the East Sea. Around 8.5 ka, the effect of the Tsushima Current started to strengthen in this region, and the present current system seems to be formed at about $7{\sim}6ka$.
