  • This paper explores the possibility of using a combination of the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and the Hilbert transform (HT), termed the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) method, to identify the modal damping ratios of the structure with closely spaced modal frequencies. The principle of the HHT method and the procedure of using the HHT method for modal damping ratio identification are briefly introduced first. The dynamic response of a two-degrees-of-freedom (2DOF) system under an impact load is then computed for a wide range of dynamic properties from well-separated modal frequencies to very closely spaced modal frequencies. The natural frequencies and modal damping ratios identified by the HHT method are compared with the theoretical values and those identified using the fast Fourier transform (FFT) method. The results show that the HHT method is superior to the FFT method in the identification of modal damping ratios of the structure with closely spaced modes of vibration. Finally, a 36-storey shear building with a 4-storey light appendage, having closely spaced modal frequencies and subjected to an ambient ground motion, is analyzed. The modal damping ratios identified by the HHT method in conjunction with the random decrement technique (RDT) are much better than those obtained by the FFT method. The HHT method performing in the frequency-time domain seems to be a promising tool for system identification of civil engineering structures.

  • This study examined the market efficiency of korea stock market by comparing variance ratios(VR) of stock groups which is sorted by market capitalization. We compute variance ratios of KOSPI large capitalization, midium capitalization, and small capitalization for 546 trading days from 2006/01/02 to 2008/04/15. For our study, we also use high frequency data that is; intra-day 1 minute data. The characteristics of variance ratios of stock groups by market capitalization as follows: From 1 to 5 minute interval, variance ratios of three stock group increase far from zero(0). The longer time interval, the more variance ratios decrease, but only large capitalization converge on around zero. This means that the market of large capitalization is more efficient compare to other stock groups. The entire sample period can be divided two sub-period because the impact of sub prime crisis arised from U.S.A. influences Korea stock market. Before sub prime crisis, the VRs of mid cap and small cap do not converge on around zero except large cap although the time interval is longer. After sub prime crisis, the VRs of three stock groups decrease when time interval is longer, but only large cap converge on around zero. We conclude that large cap is more efficient than other stock groups in Korea Stock Market.

  • The propagation of plane waves in a linear, homogeneous and isotropic nonlocal generalized thermoelastic solid medium is considered in the framework of Lord and Shulman generalization. The governing field equations are formulated and specialized in a plane. Plane wave solutions of governing equations show that there exists three plane waves, namely, P, thermal and SV waves which propagate with distinct speeds. Reflection of P and SV waves from thermally insulated or isothermal boundary of a half-space is considered. The relevant boundary conditions are applied at stress free boundary and a non-homogeneous system of three equations in reflection coefficients is obtained. For incidence of both P and SV waves, the expressions for energy ratios of reflected P, thermal and SV waves are also obtained. The speeds and energy ratios of reflected waves are computed for relevant physical constants of a thermoelastic material. The speeds of plane waves are plotted against nonlocal parameter and frequency. The energy ratios of reflected waves are also plotted against the angle of incidence of P wave at a thermally insulated stress-free surface. The effect of nonlocal parameter is shown graphically on the speeds and energy ratios of reflected waves.

  • Dynamic flow characteristics of a counter-flow vortex tube is investigated using hot-wire and piezoelectric transducer (PZT) measurements. The experimental study is conducted over a range of cold air outlet ratios (Y=0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 1.0) and inlet pressure 0.15 MPa. Temperatures are measured at the cold air outlet and along the vortex tube wall. Hot-wire is located at cold outlet and PZT is installed at inner vortex tube by mounting at throttle valve. The cold outlet temperature results show that the swirl flow of vortex tube is not axisymmetric. The hot-wire and PZT results show that there exist two distinct kinds of frequency, low frequency periodic fluctuations and high frequency periodic fluctuations. It is found that the low frequency fluctuation is consistent with the Helmholtz frequency and the high frequency fluctuation is strongly related with precession oscillation.

  • We assessed the association between frequency of heavy binge drinking and mortality from oropharynx and esophagus cancer after controlling for the total volume of alcohol intake among Korean men. The cohort comprised 2,677 male residents in Kangwha County, aged 55 or older in March 1985, for their upper digestive tract cancer mortality for 20.8 years up to December 31, 2005. For daily binge drinkers versus non-drinkers, the hazard ratios (95% Cls) for mortality were 4.82 (1.36, 17.1) and 6.75 (1.45, 31.4) for oropharyngeal and esophageal cancers, respectively. Even after adjusting for the volume of alcohol intake, we found the hazard ratios for frequency of binge drinking and mortality of oropharyngeal or esophageal cancer to not change appreciably: the hazard ratios were 4.90 (1.00, 27.0) and 7.17 (1.02, 50.6), respectively. For esophageal cancer, there was a strong dose-response relationship. The frequency of heavy binge drinking and not just the volume of alcohol intake may increase the risk of mortality from upper digestive tract cancer, particularly esophageal cancer in Korean men. These findings need to be confirmed in further studies with a larger sample size.

  • In the present study, the characteristics of pressure oscillation and heat transfer performance in an oscillating capillary tube heat pipe were experimentally investigated with respect to the heat flux, the charging ratio of working fluid, and the inclination angle to the horizontal orientation. The experimental results showed that the frequency of pressure oscillation was between 0.1 Hz and 1.5 Hz at the charging ratio of 40 vol.%. The saturation pressure of working fluid in the oscillating capillary tube heat pipe increased as the heat flux was increased. Also, as the charging ratio of working fluid was increased, the amplitude of pressure oscillation increased. When the pressure waves were symmetric sinusoidal waves at the charging ratios of 40 vol.% and 60 vol.%, the heat transfer performance was improved. At the charging ratios of 20 vol.% and 80 vol.%, the waveforms of pressure oscillation were more complicated, and the heat transfer performance reduced. At the charging ratio of 40. vol.%, the heat transfer performance of the OCHP was at the best when the inclination angle was 90$^{\circ}$ the pressure wave was a sinusoidal waveform, the pressure difference was at the least, the oscillation amplitude was at the least, and the frequency of pressure oscillation was the highest.

  • Being the most widely used in ultrasound Doppler color flow mapping, the Kasai algorithm, also known as lag-1 autocorrelation method, is capable of estimating the Doppler mean frequency relatively accurately with a modest amount of computation. Particularly in the case of imaging deep lying areas, however, its performance suffers due to low signal-to-noise ratios. The purpose of this paper is to propose a dealiased lag-2 autocorrelation method which is superior to the Kasai algorithm even at low signal-to-noise ratios and to compare their performances through simulations. The proposed algorithm is found to be better by about 2 to 3 dB than the Kasai algorithm in terms of Doppler mean frequency estimation error in the presence of measurement noise.

  • In this paper, the shell material has been taken as functionally graded material and their material quantity is located by the exponential volume fraction law. Moreover, the impact of ring supports around the shell circumference has been examined for their various positions along the shell axial length. These rings support restraints the radial displacement in the transverse direction. While the axial modal deformation functions have been estimated by characteristic beam functions and nature of materials used for construction of cylindrical shells. The fundamental natural frequency of cylindrical shell of parameter versus ratios of length- and height-to-radius for a wide range has been reported and investigated through the study. In addition, by increasing height-to-radius ratio resulting frequencies also increase and frequencies decrease on ratio of length-to-radius. Though the trends of frequency values of both ratios are converse to each other with three different boundary conditions. Also it is examined the position of ring supports with length-to radius ratio, height-to-radius ratio and varying the exponent of volume fraction. MATLAB software package has been utilized for extracting shell frequency spectra. The obtained results are confirmed by comparing with available literature.

  • Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) method by using a resonance frequency mode was carried out for ceramics made from particle boards with different phenol resin impregnation ratios (30, 40, 50, 60%) at carbonizing temperature of $800^{\circ}C$. The material for ceramics was Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens board. Dynamic modulus of elasticity increased with increasing impregnation ratio. There was a close relationship of dynamic modulus of elasticity and static bending modulus of elasticity to modulus of rupture (MOR). However, the result indicated that correlation coefficient is higher in dynamic modulus of elasticity to MOR than that in static modulus of elasticity to MOR. Therefore, the dynamic modulus of elasticity using resonance frequency by free vibration mode is more useful as a nondestructive evaluation method for predicting the MOR of ceramics made from Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens particle boards by different phenol resin impregnation ratios.

  • The frequency dependence of magnetoimpedance (MI) effect in amorphous $Fe_{78}B_{13}Si_9$ alloy has been obtained. Magnetoimpedance (MI) effect is a high-frequency phenomenon, which describes the changes of impedance in any ferromagnetic sample, when a magnetic field is applied on it. MIR (Magnetoimpedance ratios) is defined as $\Delta$ Z/Z ≡ [Z (0) / Z ($H_s$)]-1 where $H_s$ is the saturating field along the long side of the sample, The MIR of the samples annealed in vacuum has been decreased normally except that the sample annealed at 5 MHz has been reached as much as 58%.
