  • The analysis of the causes of accidents in workplaces where machines and tools are used is essential to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of safety prevention policies in places of employment in Korea. The causes of workplace accidents are not fully understood mainly due to difficulties in analyzing available descriptive information. This study focuses on the automated accident cause analysis in workplaces based on the accident abstracts found in industrial accident reports written in an unstructured descriptive format. The method proposed in this paper is based on text data mining and uses the keyword search function of Excel software to automate the analysis. The analysis results indicate that the primary reason for the frequency of accidents is related to technical aspects at a stage in which dangerous situations occur in the workplace. Accidents due to managerial causes are typically observed when danger exists in the workplace; however, managerial actions play a more important role in reducing accident severity. A small company tends to use unsafe machines and devices, leading to further accidents due to technical causes, whereas managerial causes are more conspicuous as the company grows. To preclude the occurrence of accidents due to inadequate knowledge, the implementation of safety management and the provision of safety education to elderly workers at the early stage of their employment are particularly important for small companies with less than 100 workers.

  • Schools should be a safe and comfortable environment for learning and studying. However, school facilities are usually used by many students during restricted time. These conditions such as many people, restricted time and space mold a chain of school accidents. In Korea, the school accidents are increasing annually and many students experience 'big or small incidents' and are exposed to 'potential accidents'. In this study, I investigated the present situation of the elementary schools' accidents in In-Cheon area, and analyzed the various characteristics of them. The accidents in elementary school have tendencies of occuring frequently in higher grade and boy students relatively. As analyzed in the place of accident, classrooms have a set of factors of accident, on the other hand, corridor and staircase show single distinct cause of safety problem. And also, the major portion of accidents is associated with the door in restroom and entrance space. In order to reduce the severity and frequency of school accidents, there should be needed multilateral and interdisciplinary approach. To achieve the safe school environments, this study focused on establishing a foundation of practical directions in designing elementary schools.

  • Insulation diagnosis techniques of power equipments for the stable power supply and prevention from accidents are of high importance. Diagnosis techniques is able to prevent from large accidents before they happen by finding signs of the accidents. From this point of view, this paper simulated discharge progress and partial discharge using needle-plan electrode system in air, studied the distribution of frequency spectrum of the radiated electromagnetic waves using biconical antenna and spectrum analyzer. From results of this study. the new method was introduced for measurement and analyzation of the radiated electromagnetic waves in accordance with discharge progress in air. Besides, according to the consideration of the mutual relation between frequency spectrum of the radiated electromagnetic waves and discharge progress, it was confirmed that detecting partial discharge and estimating discharge progress were possible.

  • Recently, occurrence of alcohol-involved traffic accidents is increasing while all the accidents by violation of law except drunk driving. Traffic accidents by drunk driving has a great external cost. In detecting drunk driving, blood alcohol content Many studies reported close correlation between blood alcohol content and traffic accidents by drunk driving. The risk of traffic accidnet increases exponentially as blood alcohol content increases. To control traffic accidents by drunk driving, decide target population. Heavy drinkers are few and responsible for a small part of the loss while casual drinkers are many and responsible for a large part of the loss. Casual drinkers need to be included in the targer population for the control of traffic accident by drunk driving. Stragegies to reduce the quantity of alcohol consumed, change the pattern of drink, such as frequency of drinking, raise of perceived risk of accident need to be sought.

  • The traffic accidents in Korea have been increasing every year due to various reasons and simultaneously causing socioeconomic cost at the national level. This study has analyzed the correlation between meteorological factors and the traffic accidents in Seoul during 2013. Especially, we have selected season, rain and temperature among the meteorological factors to identify their significance with the traffic accidents. In addition, analysis of variance, t-test and a multiple regression technique is applied. Major findings from the analyses are discussed at the district point of view, including the different effect of weather condition and the interaction effect of rain and temperature in winter. The results of this study would be useful for developing management strategies to reduce car crashes and injury severity in Seoul.

  • This paper aims to find out characteristics of railroad weather-related accidents and incidents and to proposes the plan of railroad disaster prevention according to the precipitation. For this, we make the database about the railroad weather-related accidents and incidents and analysis the relationship between the hourly and cumulative precipitation and railroad accidents. The results are as follows; The weather events that have the most occurrence frequency of railroad weather-related accidents and incidents is a rainfall of the precipitation and then the cause of that was the falling rocks and the collapsed roadbed. The rainfall patterns of collapsed roadbed were classified into 4 groups. When the variation of hourly rainfall is 10/15 mm/hr over, we need to consider the caution/stop of train operation and a speed limit, respectively.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate status of safety accidents of school foodservice cooks in Daegu and to analyze the factors affecting the occurrence of the accidents in order to seek effective ways for preventing safety accidents in school foodservice. The survey showed that the most frequent safety accidents were 'bruises', followed by 'burns', 'contact with harmful substances such as disinfectants', 'fall-off ' and 'sprains'. The mental fatigue perception of the respondents was generally lower than the physical fatigue perception. The means of the perception levels of work intensity, cooking environment of the foodservice place, and safety-related behaviors, and consciousness were 3.15, 2.99, and 4.06 out of 5 points, respectively. In addition, the annual average of the number of participating in the accident prevention training per person was 17.34 times, that is, the respondents received the training at least once a month on average. A multiple regression analysis was conducted to investigate the variables affecting the occurrence of safety accidents that happened to foodservice cooks. It revealed that the work intensity perception and the cooking environment perception influenced the frequency of safety accidents.

  • Background: Factors related to root causes can cause commonly occurring accidents such as falls, slips, and jammed injuries. An important means of reducing the frequency of occupational accidents in small- to medium-sized enterprises (SMSEs) of South Korea is to perform intensity analysis of the root cause factors for accident prevention in the cause and effect model like decision models, epidemiological models, system models, human factors models, LCU (life change unit) models, and the domino theory. Especially intensity analysis in a robot system and smart technology as Industry 4.0 is very important in order to minimize the occupational accidents and fatal accident because of the complexity of accident factors. Methods: We have developed the modern cause and effect model that includes factors of root cause through statistical testing to minimize commonly occurring accidents and fatal accidents in SMSEs of South Korea and systematically proposed educational policies for accident prevention. Results: As a result, the consciousness factors among factors of root cause such as unconsciousness, disregard, ignorance, recklessness, and misjudgment had strong relationships with occupational accidents in South Korean SMSEs. Conclusion: We conclude that the educational policies necessary for minimizing these consciousness factors include continuous training procedures followed by periodic hands-on experience, along with perceptual and cognitive education related to occupational health and safety.

  • Recently, safety accidents in construction sites are increasing. Accordingly, in this study, development of 'Big-Data Analysis Modeling' can collect articles from last 10 years which came from the Internet News and draw the cause of accidents that happening per season. In order to apply this study, Web Crawling Modeling that can collect 98% of desired information from the internet by using 'Xml', 'tm', "Rcurl' from the library of R, a statistical analysis program has been developed, and Datamining Model, which can draw useful information by using 'Principal Component Analysis' on the result of Work Frequency of 'Textmining.' Through Web Crawling Modeling, 7,384 out of 7,534 Internet News articles that have been posted from the past 10 years regarding "safety Accidents in construction sites", and recognized the characteristics of safety accidents that happening per season. The result showed that accidents caused by abnormal temperature and localized heavy rain, occurred frequently in spring and winter, and accidents caused by violation of safety regulations and breakdown of structures occurred frequently in spring and fall. Plus, the fact that accidents happening from collision of heavy equipment happens constantly every season was acknowledgeable. The result, which has been obtained from "Big-Data Analysis Modeling" corresponds with prior studies. Thus, the study is reliable and able to be applied to not only construction sites but also in the overall industry.
