  • In the air-conditioning industry, the refrigerant charging amount is one of the most important parameters affecting the energy efficiency ratio of heat pumps. An experimental study was performed on the characteristics of an inverter driven air-to-air heat pump system with a variation of compressor frequency and charging amount of refrigerant. The frequency was altered from 40Hz to 70Hz and the charging amount was changed from 1.6kg to 2.8kg in tests. The variation of performance was measured with switching of the expansion valve on each frequency and charging amount. All the tests were performed at the Korean Standard and test conditions of the air conditioners. As results, it was found that there existed the charging amount and the level of the suction gas superheat which provided the highest energy efficiency ratio at all the frequency bands.

  • This paper presents the characteristics of lightning over established and scheduled wind farms of Jeju island as well as over specific range of entire Jeju Island. The lightning data for 5 years from 2008 to 2012 was obtained from IMPACT ESP which detects lightning. Lightning frequency, lightning strength and regional lightning events were analyzed in detail, and then the lightning maps of Jeju Island were created. The evaluation of lightning rate was made for all the wind farms of this study. Damage to wind turbines by lightning was found in the existing wind farms. As a result, the eastern part of Jeju Island had more lightning frequency than the western part of the Island. Also, the evaluation of lightning rate was good for all established and scheduled wind farms of Jeju Island. Hankyung is the best place for lightning safety, while precaution should be taken against lightning damage in Kimnyung. Lightning damage to wind turbines occurred in Samdal and Haengwon wind farms, which had the first and the second highest lightning rate of the five existing wind farms.

  • With a progress of electrical and electronic technology, radio-frequency including high frequency components are widely to various industrial installations. Some of them are used in hazardous locations where explosive or flammable gases exist. As a result, ignition of such gases may be induced by a spark discharge when the radio frequency circuits are switched on or off. The purpose of this study is to investigate the ignition hazards of some kind of flammable mixtures based on the IEC 60079-11 publication. In this experiment, we used a high frequency resistive circuit which consists of a co-axial cable, a 20 ${\Omega}$, 30 ${\Omega}$, 40 ${\Omega}$ and 50 ${\Omega}$ resistor and two kind of power amplifier with frequency range up to almost 1 MHz and 50 MHz. Experimental results show that the ignition of the acetyleneair, ethylene-air mixtures and methane-air mixtures due to spark discharge depends primarily on the frequency of the power source in the resistive circuit the minimum ignition voltage increases gradually with the increase of the frequency.

  • This study describes a proposed method of converting an input sound signal into a color image by emulating human synesthetic skills which make it possible to associate an sound source with a specific color image. As a first step of sound-to-image conversion, features such as fundamental frequency(F0) and energy are extracted from an input sound source. Then, a musical scale and an octave can be calculated from F0 signals, so that scale, energy and octave can be converted into three elements of HSI model such hue, saturation and intensity, respectively. Finally, a color image with the BMP file format is created as an output of the process of the HSI-to-RGB conversion. We built a basic system on the basis of the proposed method using a standard C-programming. The simulation results revealed that output color images with the BMP file format created from input sound sources have diverse hues corresponding to the change of the F0 signals, where the hue elements have different intensities depending on octaves with the minimum frequency of 20Hz. Furthermore, output images also have various levels of chroma(or saturation) which is directly converted from the energy.

  • EM(Electro Magnetic) pump is used for the purpose of transporting liquid sodium coolant with electrical conductivity in the LMR(Liquid Metal Reactor). In the present study. pilot EM pump has been designed by using of equivalent circuit method which is commonly employed to analyze linear induction machines for the test of removal of residual heat. The length and diameter of the pump have fixed values of 840 mm and 101.6 mm each by taking account of geometrical size of circulation loop for the installation of EM pump. Flowrate versus developing pressure is related from Laithwaite's standard design formula and the characteristic analyses of developing force and efficiency are carried out according to change of input frequency. From the characteristic curve, input frequency of 13 Hz is determined as the design frequency. On the other hand, The annular air gap size of 6.05 mm is selected not to bring about too much hydraulic loss. Resultantly design analysis makes pump have the electrical input of 604 VA and the hydrodynamical capacity of 1.3 bars and 40 l/min.

  • The DVS(Dynamic Voltage Scaling) technique is the method to reduce the dynamic energy consumption. As using slack times, it extends the execution time of the big load operations by changing the frequency and the voltage of variable voltage processors. Researches, that controlling the energy consumption of the processors and the data transmission among processors by controlling the bandwidth to reduce the energy consumption of the entire system, have been going on. Since operations in multiprocessor systems have the data dependency between processors, however, the DVS techniques devised for single processors are not suitable to improve the energy efficiency of multiprocessor systems. We propose the new scheduling algorithm based on DVS for increasing energy efficiency of multiprocessor systems. The proposed DVS algorithm can improve the energy efficiency of the entire system because it controls frequency and voltages having the data dependency among processors.

  • Background According to the Sasang constitutional medicine, eating habits according to the characteristics of Sasang Constitution (SC) types affect management of chronic diseases and health conditions. The aim of this study is to identify the association between eating habits, such as breakfast, eating frequency, and energy intake, according to SC, and quality of life. Method This study is a cross-sectional study of people aged 33 to 55 years, sampled by stratification based on population distribution. The SC types were classified into Taeeumin (TE), Soeumin (SE), and Soyangin (SY) using a structured questionnaire (KS-15). Items examined regarding eating habits were whether the subjects had breakfast; the frequency of eating such as breakfast, lunch, dinner, and after-dinner snacks; and energy intake surveyed using a food frequency questionnaire. As for quality of life, SF-12, which is widely used worldwide to assess health conditions, was utilized. A regression analysis was conducted on the relations between eating habits according to SC and quality of life. Results The SC distribution of the 3,895 subjects was 47% for TE, 22% for SE, and 31% for SY. The scores indicating quality of life differed for TE and SY depending on whether they ate breakfast and eating frequency groups, and those of SE varied depending on levels of energy intake. A regression analysis having adjusted all covariates demonstrated for TE a positive relation between the eating frequency of three times per day or more (compared to 1.5 to 3 meals per day) and quality of life (B=1.365, p<0.001). For SE, there was a negative association between low energy intake (compared to adequate energy intake) and quality of life (B=-1.642, p=0.004). Meanwhile, no relation was found between eating habits and quality of life for SY. Conclusion This study identified the association between eating habits according to SC types and quality of life. For TE, it was found to be important to eat evenly dispersed adequate amounts as opposed to overeating or binging at once. For SE, adequate energy intake affected good quality of life. This study suggests that eating habits based on SC improve quality of life, and health management customized for each constitution should be performed in the future through proper eating habits.

  • As photovoltaic(PV) power generation systems become more common, it will be necessary to investigate islanding detection method for PV systems. Islanding of PV systems can cause a variety of problems and must be prevented. However, if the real and reactive power of load and PV system are closely matched, islanding detection by passive methods becomes difficult. Also, most active methods lose effectiveness when there are several PV systems feeding the same island. The active frequency drift positive feedback method(AFDPF) enables islanding detection by forcing the frequency of the voltage in the island to drift up or down. In this paper the research for the minimum value of chopping fraction gain applied digital phase-locked-loop(DPLL) to AFDPF considering output power quality and islanding prevention performance are performed by simulation and experiment in IEEE Std 929-2000 islanding test.

  • Vibroarthrographic(VAG) signals, emitted by human knee joints, are non-stationary and multi-component in nature and time-frequency distributions(TFD) provide powerful means to analyze such signals. The objective of this paper is to classify VAG signals, generated during joint movement, into two groups(normal and patient group) using the characteristic parameters extracted by time-frequency transform, and to evaluate the classification accuracy. Noise within TFD was reduced by singular value decomposition and back-propagation neural network(BPNN) was used for classifying VAG signals. The characteristic parameters consist of the energy parameter, energy spread parameter, frequency parameter, frequency spread parameter by Wigner-Ville distribution and the amplitude of frequency distribution, the mean and the median frequency by fast Fourier transform. Totally 1408 segments(normal 1031, patient 377) were used for training and evaluating BPNN. As a result, the average value of the classification accuracy was 92.3(standard deviation ${\pm}0.9$)%. The proposed method was independent of clinical information, and showed good potential for non-invasive diagnosis and monitoring of joint disorders such as osteoarthritis and chondromalacia patella.
