  • The effect of various polymers on the freeze-thaw resistance of hardened cement mortar was investigated. For this study, styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were used to prepare cement mortar specimen, and then freeze-thaw experiment was carried out. By adding SBR adn EVA to the specimen, the freeze-thaw resistance of specimens was improved, but when PVA was added to the specimen, its freeze-thaw resistance was lowered. Particularly, the specimens which were added 5, 10% of SBR and 5% of EVA showed excellent freeze-thaw resistance in the salt environment.

  • For the present experiment five Portland cement mortars are in order: mortars with two different water/ cement ratios (W/C=0.45 and 0.50, each having no chemical additive), and those with an additive such as superplasticizer, air-entraining agent or water-repelling agent. We fix the W/C ratio of mortars having additive so that their pastes can yield the same workability as that of the cement mortar of W/C=0.50 with no additive. It is shown that the freeze-thaw resistivity depends heavily on the characteristic of wide pores. Despite a good deal of wide pores, the air-entrained specimen shows a good freeze-thaw resistivity due to appropriate air-pores. And also the specimen with water-repelling agent, which proves to cause the microstructure to become hydrophobic, make good resistance to freeze-thaw cycles in spite of its high wide-porosity. Our suggestion is that the freeze-thaw durability of Portland cement mortar/concrete can be more effectively enhanced by using air-entraining agent or water-repelling agent, and simutaneously by taking proper measures against foaming and/or the increased tendency of wide-pore building due to additive.

  • This study were subjected to accelerated weathering test under freeze-thaw and pressure conditions to observe initiation and propagation of cracks using CLSM. Applied stress was set at 50 MPa, 55 MPa, 70 MPa for 3 samples each by using compressor and freeze-thaw experiment was conducted while samples maintained that condition. In freeze-thaw experiments, a temperature range was set to -20~40℃ which was 1 cycle for 6 hours. The freeze-thaw cycle was composed of time which reached to set temperature for 1 hour and holding time for 2 hours. On the basis of this cycle, surface of samples was observed by CLSM after each 20 freeze-thaw cycle. From this research, according to increase freeze-thaw cycle, there were 7, 10, 19 each cracks and High pressured sample's accumulate length was longer than low pressured sample's. High pressured sample's crack velocities were also faster than low pressured sample's which were calculated by accumulate length and freeze-thaw cycle.

  • In this paper, the quantitative evaluation method is presented for the durability performance of mountain tunnel concrete linings experiencing freezing and thawing during winter season. To analyze the freeze-thaw characteristics of lining, the freezing time of the concrete lining was measured by the outside temperature. The heat flow analysis was conducted based on the freezing time measured through the indoor experiment, and based on this, the energy required to freeze the concrete lining by the temperature of the outside air could be analyzed. In addition, the temperature change during the winter season was measured through an instrument installed on the actual tunnel concrete lining, and based on the results of indoor and field experiments, criteria for freeze-thaw environment evaluation and progress evaluation were prepared. Also, an equation using the freezing index was proposed through regression analysis.

  • The phenomena that we experience in everyday life such as snow, rain, wind, and temperature are referred to as weather, and the average state of atmospheric phenomena that occur over a long period of time in a specific region is referred to as climate. In addition, significant variation of climate compared to the average state is referred to as climate change. Concrete structures can have various problems when exposed to elements. Among the problems, the freeze-thaw problem due to extreme climatic factors such as heavy rain and snowfall has become a particularly significant issue recently. The concrete that has been subjected to repeated freeze-thaw rather than too high or low temperature shows serious degradation of durability, and the performance of structures with degraded performance is difficult to recover. Therefore, in this study, concrete durability performance with respect to freeze-thaw from curing conditions change due to wind speed and sunshine exposure time. Concrete freeze-thaw experiment are performed. using wind speed and sunlight exposure time. Also, performance based evaluation through the satisfaction curve based on the freeze-thaw test results are performed.

  • It is generally known that the frost-resistance of concrete is much affected by the air content in concrete and by the air void system or air distribution. And also the frost-resistance is believed to vary with the stre¬ngth of concrete. This article is prepared to describe, based on experiment, the effect of the air content and the air void system, particularly the effect of the spacing factor, on the freeze-thaw resistance of the high strength conc¬rete. For this purpose, I first worked on Non-AE concrete to make its compressive strength set about 400 to 500 kg/em'. However, the freeze-thaw test on the Non-AE concrete resulted in low durability factor, I.e., 10-2~0%. Thus to enhance the durability, another supplementary step was needed. I used AE admixture. which enhanced durability by changing the air content from 2% to 12%. The frost-thaw test was then performed 500 cycles on the 20 kind of concrete mixtures which differ in unit cement content and in water-cement ratio. Keywords : frost -resistance, air content, air void system, air distribution, spacing factor, freeze-thaw test, dur ability factor. capillary cavity, Linear Traverse Method.

  • Freeze-thaw experiments were conducted to evaluate changes in surface roughness and physical properties in samples of granite from Ilgwang and Imki mines, Korea. The temperature range in the experiments was $-20^{\circ}C$ to $40^{\circ}C$, based on typical summer and winter temperatures in Korea, and the surface was observed every 20 cycles. One cycle comprised 1 hour of heating or cooling of the samples and 1 hour during which the target temperature was maintained. With increasing repetitions of the freeze-thaw experiment, porosity increased by 0.05%-0.15% in the two samples and the dry weight increased, whereas the volume of the soil and saturation weight decreased. Observations by confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) revealed that line and surface roughness parameters showed a tendency to increase and decrease, respectively, with elapsed time. Changes in surface roughness were apparent on the CLSM images.

  • Rocks exposed to the surface are subject to long-term weathering, and such effects weaken their engineering stability. Especially as weathering progresses, the surface of rocks will be changed by weathering, and such surface changes will affect the engineering safety of the rock mass. In addition, the chemical species produced in the weathered rock have a direct effect on the surrounding environment or on the structure. In areas where rocks are exposed, such as mining areas, chemical species produced by weathering can have a serious impact on the surrounding natural environment. In this study, accelerated weathering experiments using freeze/thaw system were conducted on rocks that had already been weathered and fresh rocks, and surface changes of each rock were observed with confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM), and chemical species were analyzed using IC/ICP-MS. As the weathering progressed, the surface roughness decreased, and the amount of chemical species produced increased. The results of this study can be used as basic data for evaluating engineering/environmental safety in areas where rocks are exposed.

  • We analyzed the changes in the properties of the Mudeungsan tuff by conducting an artificial weathering experiment based on the climatic conditions of Mudeungsan National Park, to evaluate the long-term stability of the columnar jointing in the tuff. The climate of Mudeungsan National Park over 20 years suggests the temperature conditions for freeze-thaw are -20 to 30℃. The change in tuff properties due to weathering were estimated by measuring the elastic wave velocity, which was measured after every 40 freeze-thaw cycles. Based on the origin of the Mudeungsan tuff and fracture distribution in the tuff, the elastic wave velocity in samples from 24 locations was measured at regular intervals in the axial and radial directions. The axial elastic wave velocity of the Mudeungsan tuff is 5,187~5,367 m/s, and the radial elastic wave velocity is 4,001~5,290 m/s. As a result of 200 freeze-thaw cycles, the axial elastic wave velocity decreased by 5.53% for sample MT-1, 4.89% for MT-2, and 5.36% for MT-3. The radial elastic wave velocity decreased by 20.00% for MT-1, 17.02% for MT-2, and 19.84% for MT-3. The decrease in elastic wave velocity due to the freeze-thaw cycles is greater for low values of elastic wave velocity. For the axial elastic wave velocity, the weathering is accelerated after 120 cycles and, for the radial elastic wave velocity, weathering actively progresses from the start of the freeze-thaw cycles. In summary, for a low elastic wave velocity, experimental weathering results in a large decrease in elastic wave velocity. In addition, the Mudeungsan tuff and its columnar joints have a distinct anisotropy.
