  • In CNC machining, demands on precision machining of free formed surface model are increasing. Most of the CAD/CAM systems provide the NURBS(Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline) interpolator. NURBS is defined with NURBS parameter by control point, weight value and knot value. This paper shows the realtime NURBS interpolation algorithms and compared with each other. One is based on the equal length of curve segments rather than equal increment of the parameter Δu. The other is to limit the interpolation error to any desired level by adjusting the feedrate considering the curvature of the shape and sampling time.

  • This paper presents a fairing method for reverse engineering of a free-formed surface. Utilizing measured data points, reverse engineering is a useful method to construct a CAD model from physical model. Measured data points should be faired since raw data may have outliers. A fairing algorithm of polynomial regression model generates smooth curves of approximation in this paper. The faired curves are utilized to construct a free-formed surface. For a verifying example, an impeller blade is digitized with a CMM to collect raw data on the surfacce and a CAD model is constructed. This research produces impeller blades with 5-axis machining center through the CAD model and compares them with a physical model. As a result the produced surface modeled with the fairing method gives less error than that without the fairing.

  • EFP composed of explosive, charge and liner generally penetrates standoff a target by Monroe effect. Its performance highly depends on penetrator characteristics and flight stability. Penetration ability can be dramatically reduced when the penetrator reaches the target with AOA, even if the penetrator has high kinetic energy and L/D ratio. Therefore, it is important to research not only penetrator characteristics and but also flight stability. In this work, the effect of liner shape on penetrator characteristics was examined using free flight test and numerical tools. It was found that tip velocity of penetrator was increased with decreasing liner thickness. It was also found that thicker liner had higher static margin leading to better flight status.

  • The Phase and temperature changes of large clusters formed in a free jet expansion of acetylene in 14atm and 233K has been studied. The cluster has been treated as a sphere composed of many shells. A mean diameter of 4.88 microns was obtained by modeling the experimental cooling curve of clusters based on evaporation and heat conduction theory.

  • The objective of this work is to describe the main steps involved in the derivation of a GBT (Generalised Beam Theory) formulation to analyse the vibration behaviour of loaded cold-formed steel members and also to illustrate the application and capabilities of this formulation. In particular, the paper presents and discusses the results of a detailed investigation about the local and global free vibration behaviour of lipped channel simply supported columns. After reporting some relevant earlier GBT-based results dealing with the buckling and vibration behaviours of columns and load-free members, the paper addresses mostly issues concerning the variation of the column fundamental frequency and vibration mode nature/shape with its length and axial compression level. For validation purposes, some GBT-based results are also compared with values obtained by means of 4-node shell finite element analyses performed in the code ABAQUS.

  • Two- and three-dimensional turbulent airflows in a 9-degrees-bent channel are studied numerically. The inner surfaces of upper and lower walls are parallel to each other upstream and downstream of the bend section. The free stream is supersonic, whereas the flow at the channel exit is either supersonic or subsonic depending on the given backpressure. Solutions of the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are obtained with a finite-volume solver ANSYS CFX. The solutions reveal instability of formed shock waves and a flow hysteresis in considerable bands of the free-stream Mach number at zero and negative angles of attack. The instability is caused by an interaction of shocks with the expansion flow formed over the convex bend of lower wall.

  • In this study, the effect of pH on the antioxidative activities of melanoidins formed as a result of the reaction between sugars, glucose (Glc) or fructose (Fru), and amino acids, L-asparagine (L-Asn) and D-asparagine (D-Asn) are examined. For this purpose, antioxidative activities were evaluated on the basis of reducing power, including ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) and free radical scavenging activity includes 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl- hydrazil (DPPH) and 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) and ferrous ion chelating activity. Ethylene diamine tetraacetate (EDTA) and trolox, a water-soluble analog of tocopherol, were used as reference antioxidant compounds. The antioxidative activities of the melanoidins at a pH of 7.0 were greater than those with a pHs of 4.0 and pH 10.0. Especially, it was found that the melanoidins formed from D-isomers are more effective antioxidants in different in vitro assays. The reducing power and chelating activity of the melanoidins formed from the Fru systems were higher than those of the melanoidins formed from the Glc systems. However, the ABTS radical scavenging activity of the melanoidins formed from the Glc systems were higher than those of the melanoidins formed from the Fru systems. In particular, the DPPH radical scavenging activity and the FRAP of the melanoidins showed different antioxidative activities according to pH level.

  • Microstructure and shear strength of Sn-Zn lead-free solders and Au/Ni/Cu UBM joint under thermal aging conditions was investigated. The samples were aged isothermally at 10$0^{\circ}C$ and 15$0^{\circ}C$ for 300, 600, and 900 hours. The IMCs(Intermetallic Compound) at the interface between solder and UBM were examined by FESEM and TEM. The results showed that the shear strength was decreased with aging time and temperature. The solder ball with high activated RA flux had about 8.2% higher shear strength than that of RMA flux. Poor wetting and many voids were observed in the fractured solder joint with of RMA flux. The decreased shear strengths were caused by IMC growth and Zn grain coarsening. Zn reacted with Au and then was transformed to the $\beta$ -AuZn compound. Although AuZn grew first, $r-Ni_5Zn_{21}$ compounds were formed with aging time. The layers indicated by $Ni_5Zn_{21}(1)$, (2), and (3) were formed with the thickness of ∼0.7 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, ∼4 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and ∼2 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, respectively.

  • The experimental study for turning circular free fanned surface with TiN coated insert tool was conducted for different cutting conditions such as cutting speed, feed rate and depth-of-cut. For the fluctuation of 1.0mm depth-of-cut, the characteristics for machined surface and tool wear were less influenced by the feed rate and cutting speed than those of higher depth of cut. The higher surface roughness and surface precision were obtained in lower cutting speed. For the fluctuation of 1.5mm depth-of-cut, the higher surface roughness was obtained for the case of the lower feed rate of 0.05-10mm/rev and the higher cutting speed of 80m/min. For the fluctuation of 2.0mm depth-of-cut, the surface roughness and surface precision were too worse to machine the specimen And the flank wear on the tool was increased rapidly rather than the crater wear.
