  • The Floating storage and re-gasification unit (FSRU), which has large cargo storage tanks, is a floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal. The sloshing motion in tanks that are partially filled with LNG can cause impact pressure on the containment system and affect the global motion of the FSRU. Therefore, the accurate prediction of sloshing motion has been a significant issue in the offshore gas production industry. In this paper, a particle method based on the moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) method proposed by Koshizuka and Oka (1996) has been modified to predict sloshing motion accurately in a rectangular tank with the filling ratio of water. The simulation results, including the violent sloshing of the fluid, were validated by comparison with the original MPS method.

  • Rutile type of $TiO_{2}$ single crystal was grown by floating zone method in order to obtain the highly transparent and contamination-free single crystal. The linear refractive index of perpendicular and parallel to c-axis was measured as a function o f wavelength from 500 to 1000nm. The optical energy band gap was estimated as 2.99 eV from the absorption spectrum. The theoretical $\chi^{(3)}$} value of $TiO_{2}$ was discussed in comparison with that of $SiO_{2}$ quartz single crystal on the basis of semiempirical model. On the other hand, the second-hyperpolarizability, ${\gamma}({Ti}^{4+})$ was calculated in order to describe the effect of $Ti_{4}$ ion on the third order nonlinear optical properties.

  • This paper describes the analysis of the UHF signal characteristics due to the partial discharge sources which can exist in a GIS. For the experiment, a model GIS was made and 5 types of discharge source were created as follows; corona discharge, surface discharge, void discharge, discharge due to free particle, discharge from floating electrode. The frequency spectra and the phase characteristics of UHF signals were induced by UHF signal analysis. The results were quantified to systematically adapt to analyze the PD sources in the GIS and utilized as algorithm data based on the neural network for Back-Propagation Algorithm with a multi-layer structure. The perception rate of the constructed algorithm showed approximately 94[%] and 82[%] in learning and testing data, respectively.

  • Three-dimensional Lagrangian fluid finite element is applied to seismic response analysis of an oil storage tank with a floating roof. The fluid element utilized in the present analysis is formulated based on the displacement finite element method considering only volumetric elasticity and its element stiffness matrix is derived by using one-point integration method in order to avoid volumetric locking. The method usually adds a rotational penalty stiffness to satisfy the irrotational condition for fluid motion and modifies element mass matrices through the projected mass method to suppress spurious hourglass-mode appeared in compensation for one-point integration. In the fluid element utilized in the present paper, a small hourglass stiffness is employed. The fluid and structure domains for the objective oil storage tank are modeled by eight-node solid elements and four-node shell elements, respectively, and the transient response of the floating roof structure or the free surface are evaluated by implicit direct time integration method. The results of seismic response analyses are compared with those by other method and the validation of the present analysis using three-dimensional Lagrangian fluid finite elements is shown.

  • In the sea various methods have been conducted to capture wave energy which include the use of pendulums, pneumatic devices, etc. Floating devices, such as a cavity resonance device take advantages of both the water motion and the wave induced motions of the floating body itself. The wave energy converter is known commercially as the WAGB(Wave Activated Generator Buoy) and is used in some commercially available buoys to power navigation aids such as lights and horns. This wave energy converter consists of a circular flotation body which contains a vertical water column that has free communication with the sea. A theoretical analysis of this power generated by a pneumatic type wave energy converter is performed and the results obtained from the analysis are used for a real wave energy converter buoy. This paper is shown to have an optimum value for which maximum power is obtained at a given resonant wave period Also, the length of the internal water column corresponds to that of the water mass in the water column. If designed properly, wave energy converter can take advantage not only of the cavity resonance, but also qf the heaving motion of the buoy. Finally, simulation is performed with a LabVIEW program and the simulation results are applied to a wave energy simulator for modifying design data for a wave energy converter.

  • The present study deals with the conceptual design of a motion reduction device for a floating wave-offshore wind hybrid power generation platform. A damping plate attached to the bottom of a column of a large semi-submersible is introduced to reduce the motion of the platform. Performance analyses on various shapes and configurations of damping plates were performed using the potential flow solver, and the appropriate configuration and size of the damping plate were selected based on the numerical results. In order to see the effect of viscous damping, a small scale model test was performed in a 2D wave flume. The performances of five different damping plates were measured and discussed based on the results of free decay tests and regular wave tests.

This paper presents the analysis results and the design method for the WEC(Wave Energy Converter), and the associate results are application to the commercially available WEC for buoy. Maximum performance of WEC occurs at resonance with driving waves. The analysis of WEC is performed with LabVIEW program, and the design method of WEC for buoy is suggested in this paper.

  • A floating rig, which has been used to develop the ocean resources has a common characteristics with the catamaran ship that it is composed of the two simple hulls. So the motion responses of the floating rig can be predicted theoretically with the aid of the strip method as those of the catamaran. And for the strip method, the two-dimensional hydrodynamic coefficients are the most important inputs to predict the results accurately. In this report, a theoretical method is proposed for calculating two-dimensional hydrodynamic forces and moments acting upon arbitrary shaped twin-hull cylinders, which are forced to make a heaving, swaying and rolling oscillation about their mean position on the free surface of a finite depth water. The theoretical results by making use of the singularity distribution method are presented. The accuracy of the coefficients was confirmed to be reasonable by the comparison with the Ohkusu's results for two circular cylinders in an infinite depth water. The depth effects on two-dimensional hydrodynamic coefficients for two circular cylinders are also checked. In some range of wave numbers, large differences in the behavior of hydrodynamic coefficients between for a finite depth and for an infinite depth are shown.
