This paper presents the effects of free-stream turbulence on streamwise surface pressure fluctuations on two-dimensional rectangular cylinders. Particular attention is given to possible effects of turbulence integral scale on fluctuation and peak pressures. The mean, standard deviation, peak pressure coefficients, spectra and cross-correlation of fluctuating pressures were measured to investigate the nature of the separation and reattachment phenomenon in turbulent flows over a wide range of turbulence intensity and integral scale.

The wake effects behind wind turbines were investigated by using data from a Met Mast tower and the SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system for a wind turbine. The results of the wake investigations and predicted values for the velocity deficit based on the eddy viscosity model were compared with the turbulence intensity from the Lange model. As a result, the velocity deficit and turbulence intensity of the wake increased as the free stream wind speed decreased. In addition, the magnitude of the velocity deficit for the center of the wake using the eddy viscosity model was overestimated while the turbulence intensity from the Lange model showed similarities with measured values.
This paper describes the effect of the incidence angle on the turbulence structure in the wake of a turbine rotor blade at the low inlet free-stream turbulence level. For three incidence angles of -5, 0 and 5 degrees, mid-span energy spectrum as well as mid-span profiles of mean velocity magnitude and turbulence intensity are reported at three downstream locations in the wake. Vortex shedding frequencies are obtained from the energy spectrum. The result shows that as the incidence angle changes from-5 to 5 degrees, the boundary layer on the suction surface tends to be thickened, which results in widening of the wake. Strouhal numbers based on the shedding frequencies have a nearly constant value of 0.3, independent of tested incidence angles.

Heat (mass) transfer characteristics have been investigated on the endwall of a large-scale linear turbine cascade. Its profile is based on the mid-span of the first-stage rotor blade in a industrial gas turbine. By using the naphthalene sublimation technique, local heat (mass) transfer coefficients are measured for two different free-stream turbulence intensities of 1.3% and 4.7%. The results show that local heat (mass) transfer Stanton number is widely varied on the endwall, and its distribution depends strongly on the three-dimensional vortical flows such as horseshoe vortices, passage vortex, and corner vortices. From this experiment, severe heat loads are found on the endwall near the blade suction side as well as near the leading and trailing edges of the blade. In addition, the effect of the free-stream turbulence on the heat (mass) transfer is also discussed in detail.

Incompressible flow over a backward-facing step is computed by low Reynolds number turbulence models in order to compare with direct simulation results. In this study, selected low Reynolds number 1st and 2nd (Algebraic Stress Model : ASM) moment closure turbulence models are adopted and compared with each other. Each turbulence model predicts different flow characteristics, different re-attachment point, velocity profiles and Reynolds stress distribution etc. Results by .kappa.-.epsilon. turbulence models indicate that predicted re-attachment lengths are shorter than those by standard model. Turbulent intensity and eddy viscosity by low Reynolds number .kappa.-.epsilon. models are still greater than DNS results. The results by algebraic stress model (ASM) are more reasonable than those by .kappa.-.epsilon. models. The convective scheme is QUICK (Quadratic Upstream Interpolation for Convective Kinematics) and SIMPLE algorithm is adopted. Reynolds number based on step height and inlet free stream velocity is 5100.
Dispersion of coolant jets in a film cooling flow field is the result of a highly complex interaction between the film cooling jets and the mainstream. In order to investigate the effect of blowing ratios on the film cooling of turbine blade, cylindrical body model was used. Mainstream Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter was $7.1\;\times\;10^4$. The free-stream turbulence intensity kept at $5.0\%$ by using turbulence grid. The effect of coolant flow rates was studied for blowing ratios of 0.9, 1.3 and 1.6, respectively. The temperature distribution of the cylindrical model surface is visualized by infrared thermography (IRT). Results show that the film-cooling performance may be significantly improved by controlling the blowing ratio. As blowing ratio increases, the adiabatic film cooling effectiveness is more broadly distributed and the area protected by coolant increases. The mass flow rate of the coolant through the first-row holes is less than that through the second-row holes due to the pressure variation around the cylinder surface.

Turbulent flow characteristics in the near wake of a square cylinder have been studied experimentally by using a Digital PIV method. Experiments are performed at the Reynolds numbers of 1600 and 3900 based on the free-stream velocity and the square height. The ensemble averaged turbulence statistics are acquired from 2030 realizations of instantaneous fluctuating velocity field after the conventional Reynolds decomposition. The differences in turbulent intensity and Reynolds shear stress profiles fur both oases indicate that the effect of Reynolds number seems to be descernible mainly due to the occurrence of transition in the separated shear layer. Because of the periodic nature of vortex shedding process, transverse velocity fluctuations contribute dominantly , to turbulent kinetic energy distribution. A comparison with previous LDV data obtained at much higher Reynolds number shows a fairly good agreement each other. It turns out that the effect of Reynolds number diminishes as increasing Reynolds number, which is a well-known feature of a sharp-edged bluff body wake. The streamwise variation of turbulence intensities are compared with those from a circular cylinder along the centerline at the same Reynolds number. The overall magnitudes and the decay rates of turbulence intensities are quite similar, but some differences are noticeble especially in the transverse intensity variation.

Experimental study is conducted to investigate the heat/mass transfer and flow characteristics for the flow over backward-facing step and cavities. A naphthalene sublimation method has been employed to measure the mass transfer coefficients on the duct wall and LDV system has been used to obtain mean velocity profiles and turbulence intensities. Reynolds number based on the step height and free stream velocity is 20,000 and St numbers of acoustic excitations given to separated flow are 0.2 to 0.4. The spectra of streamwise velocity fluctuation show a sharp peak forcing frequency for an acoustically excited flow. The results reveal that the vortex pairing and overall turbulence level are enhanced by the acoustic excitation and a significant decrease in the reattachment length and the increased turbulence intensity are observed with the excitation. A certain acoustic excitation increases considerably the heat/mass transfer coefficient at the reattachment point and in the recirculation region. For the cavities, heat/mass transfer is enhanced by the acoustic excitation due to the elevated turbulence intensity. For the 10H cavity, the flow pattern is significantly changed with the acoustic excitation. However, for the 5H cavity, the acoustic excitation has little effect on the flow pattern in the cavity.

Mean flow fields in the near wake of a square cylinder have been studied experimentally using a Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). Ensemble-averaged velocity fields are successfully measured fur the square cylinder wake including the reverse flow region which arises many difficulties in accurate measurement by using conventional techniques, Experiments are performed at two free stream velocities of U$\_$$\infty$/ = 1.27m/s and 3.03m/s. The corresponding Reynolds numbers based on the free-stream velocity and cylinder diameter are 1600 and 3900, respectively. The intensity of free-stream turbulence is less than 1%, the blockage ratio (D/H) is 6.6% and the aspect ratio (W/D) is 40. The effect of Reynolds number on the near wake of a square cylinder has been investigated by the global mean velocity and instantaneous velocity fields. The most striking feature is that the length of the recirculating region increases with increasing Reynolds number, which turns out totally reverse trend compared with those observed in the circular cylinder wake at the same range of Reynolds number. Fer the case of higher Reynolds number, the mean velocity data agree well with those of relevant existing data obtained at much higher Reynolds numbers, which reflects the general aspect of sharp-edged bluff body wake.
