This study presents a thin-walled space frame element based on the classical Timoshenko beam theory. The element is derived according to the assumed strain field in order to resolve the shear-locking phenomenon. The shape function is developed in accordance with the strain field which is assumed to be constant at a 2-noded straight frame element. In this study, the geometrically nonlinear analysis applies the Corotational procedure in order to evaluate unbalanced loads. The bowing effect is also considered faithfully. Two numerical examples are given; monosymmetric curved and nonsymmetric straight cantilever. When these example structures behave lateral-torsional bucking, the critical loads are obtained by this study and ABAQUS shell elements. Also, the post-buckling behavior is examined. The results give good agreement between this study and ABAQUS shell.
This paper presents the effect of axial stretching on large amplitude free vibration of an extensible suspended cable supported at the same level. The model formulation developed in this study is based on the virtual work-energy functional of cables which involves strain energy due to axial stretching and work done by external forces. The difference in the Euler equations between equilibrium and motion states is considered. The resulting equations govern the horizontal and vertical motion of the cables, and are coupled and highly nonlinear. The solution for the nonlinear static equilibrium configuration is determined by the shooting method while the solution for the large amplitude free vibration is obtained by using the second-order central finite difference scheme with time integration. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the vibration behaviour of extensible suspended cables.
Based on the basic equations of elasticity, free-edge effects on stresses in cross-ply laminated plates are found by using the state space method. The laminates are subjected to uniaxial-uniform extension plate, which is a typical example of general plane strain problem. The study takes into account material constants of all individual material layers and the state equation of a laminate is solved analytically in the through thickness direction. By this approach, a composite plate may be composed of an arbitrary number of orthotropic layers, each of which may have different material properties and thickness. The solution provides a continuous displacement and inter-laminar stress fields across all material interfaces and an approxiamte prediction to the singularity of stresses occurring in the boundary layer region of a free-edge. Numerical solutions are obtained and compared with the results obtained from an alternative numerical method.
An improved shear deformable thin-walled curved beam theory to overcome the drawback of currently available beam theories is newly proposed for the spatially coupled free vibration and elastic analysis. For this, the displacement field considering the shear deformation effects is presented by introducing displacement parameters defined at the centroid and shear center axes. Next the elastic strain and kinetic energies considering the shear effects due to the shear forces and the restrained warping torsion are rigorously derived. Then the equilibrium equations are consistently derived for curved beams with non-symmetric thin-walled sections. It should be noticed that this formulation can be easily reduced to the warping-free beam theory by simply putting the sectional properties associated with warping to zero for curved beams with L- or T-shaped sections. Finally in order to illustrate the validity and the accuracy of this study, finite element solutions using the isoparametric curved beam elements are presented and compared with those in available references and ABAQUS's shell elements.
The Enriched Free Mesh Method (EFMM) is a patch-wise procedure in which both a displacement field on an element and a stress/strain field on a cluster of elements connected to a node can be defined. On the other hand, the Superconvergent Patch Recovery (SPR) is known to be an efficient post-processing procedure of the finite element method to estimate the error norm at a node. In this paper, we discuss the relationship between solutions of the EFMM and those of the SPR through several convergence studies. In addition, in order to solve the demerit of the smoothing effect on the fracture mechanics fields, we implement a singular stress field to a local patch in the EFMM, and its effectiveness is investigated.

Modal vibration characteristics of a thin annular disk containing narrow radial slots are studied numerically and experimentally. Existing analytical solution is examined based on these results revealing that it can not precisely predict eigenvalues of the disk with slots since it does not accurately consider change in the vibration modes and change in strain energy density distributions due to the slots. Parametric study on slot length found that distortions in the mode shape as well as changes in the corresponding natural frequencies are proportional to the slot length. Consequently, errors in the calculated eigenvalues are also proportional to the slot length and accurate data can not be obtained with existing analytical solution above a certain level of slot length. Same phenomena can be observed in both free-free disk and fixed-free disk.

MeshFree methods have become popular owing to the ease with which high stress gradients can be identified and node density distribution can be reformulated to accomplish faster convergence. This paper presents a strategy for nodal density refinement with strain energy as basis in Element-Free Galerkin MeshFree technique. Two popular flat plate problems are considered for the demonstration of the proposed strategies. Issue of integration errors introduced during nodal density refinement have been addressed by suggesting integration cell refinement. High stress effects around two symmetrical semi-circular notches under in-plane axial load have been addressed in the first problem. The second considers crack propagation under mode I and mode II fracture loading by the way of introducing high stress intensity through line crack. The computational efficacy of the adaptive refinement strategies proposed has been highlighted.

Lead-free (Bi0.5Na0.41K0.09)TiO3 (BNKT) multilayer ceramic actuators were prepared using tape-casting and screen-printing techniques. Co-firing behavior of BNKT/AgPd laminates was examined as a function of sintering temperature. It was found that co-firing induced bending and electrical properties were very sensitive to sintering condition. By optimizing sintering conditions, lead-free electrostrictive multilayer actuators with normalized strain Smax/Emax of 266 pm/V have been successfully fabricated, which is promising for lead-free actuator applications.

In this study, the characteristics of chip formation of the cold drawn Bi-S free machining steels were assessed. And for comparison, those of the cold drawn Pb-S free machining steel, the hot rolled low carbon steel which has MnS as free machining inclusions and the conventional steels were also investigated. During chip formation, the cold drawn free machining steels show relatively little change in thickness and width of chip compare to those of the conventional carbon steels. And a single parameter which indicates the degree of deformation during chip formation, 'chip cross-section area ratio' is introduced. The chip cross-section area. The variational patterns of cross-section area is divided by undeformed chip cross-section area. The variational patterns of the chip cross-section area ratio of the materials cut are similar to those of the shear strain values. The shear stress, however, seems to be dependent on the carbon content of the materials. The cold drawn BiS and Pb-S steels show nearly the same chip forming behaviors and the energy consumed during chip formation is almost same. A low carbon steel without free machining aids shows poor chip breakability due to its high ductility. By introducing a small amount of non-metallic inclusions such as MnS, Bi, Pb or merely increasing carbon content the chip breakability improves significantly.
The theories having been developed thus far account for higher-order variation of transverse shear strain through the depth of the beam and satisfy the stress-free boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the beam. A shear correction factor, therefore, is not required. In this paper, the effect of surface on the axial buckling and free vibration of nanobeams is studied using various refined higher-order shear deformation beam theories. Furthermore, these theories have strong similarities with Euler-Bernoulli beam theory in aspects such as equations of motion, boundary conditions, and expressions of the resultant stress. The equations of motion and boundary conditions were derived from Hamilton's principle. The resultant system of ordinary differential equations was solved analytically. The effects of the nanobeam length-to-thickness ratio, thickness, and modes on the buckling and free vibration of the nanobeams were also investigated. Finally, it was found that the buckling and free vibration behavior of a nanobeam is size-dependent and that surface effects and surface energy produce significant effects by increasing the ratio of surface area to bulk at nano-scale. The results indicated that surface effects influence the buckling and free vibration performance of nanobeams and that increasing the length-to-thickness increases the buckling and free vibration in various higher-order shear deformation beam theories. This study can assist in measuring the mechanical properties of nanobeams accurately and designing nanobeam-based devices and systems.
