Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is used to study the effects of steady slot suction on the aerodynamic forces of and flow around a wall-mounted finite-length square cylinder. The aspect ratio H/d of the tested cylinder is 5, where H and d are the cylinder height and width, respectively. The Reynolds number based on free-stream oncoming flow velocity U∞ and d is 2.78×104. The suction slot locates near the leading edge of the free end, with a width of 0.025d and a length of 0.9d. The suction coefficient Q (= Us/U∞) is varied as Q = 0, 1 and 3, where Us is the velocity at the entrance of the suction slot. It is found that the free-end steady slot suction can effectively suppress the aerodynamic forces of the model. The maximum reduction of aerodynamic forces occurs at Q = 1, with the time-mean drag, fluctuating drag, and fluctuating lift reduced by 3.75%, 19.08%, 40.91%, respectively. For Q = 3, all aerodynamic forces are still smaller than those for Q = 0 (uncontrolled case), but obviously higher than those for Q = 1. The involved control mechanism is successfully revealed, based on the comparison of the flow around cylinder free end and the near wake for the three tested Q values.

In this report, we present a scalp defect reconstruction with lateral arm free flap. We highlight the difficulty in obtaining a recipient vein and the venous drainage managed through an open end of the donor vein. A 52-year-old woman presented with a pressure sore on the left scalp. A lateral arm free flap was transferred to cover this $8{\times}6cm$ defect. The arterial anastomosis was successful, but no recipient vein could be identified within the wound bed. Instead, we used a donor venous end for the direct open venous drainage. In order to keep this exposed venous end patent, we applied heparin-soaked gauze dressing to the wound. Also, the vein end was mechanically dilated and irrigated with heparin solution at two hour intervals. Along with fluid management and blood transfusion, this management was continued for the five days after the operation. The flap survived well without any complication. Through this case, we were able to demonstrate that venous congestion can be avoided by drainage of the venous blood through an open vessel without the use of leeches.
This study was done to observe the occurrence of heterotrophic bacteria in terms of free chlorine residuals in two different water distribution systems, which belongs to both K and Y water treatment plant of S city in Korea. The data analyzed in the distribution systems show that the free chlorine residuals decreased from 0.10 to 0.56 mg/l for K, and 0.51 to 0.78 mg/l for Y. The decay of free chlorine is clearly higher in both March and August than in January. The HPC in the distribution systems are ranged from 0 to 40 cfu/ml for K, 0 to 270 cfu/ml for Y, on $R_2$A medium. In particular, its level is relatively high at the consumer's ground storage tanks, taps, and the point-of-end area of Y. The predominant genera that were studied in the distribution systems were Acinetobacter, Sphingomonas (branch of Pseudomonas), Micrococcus, Bacillus, Staphylococcus. The diversity of heterotrophic bacteria increases in the end-point area. Most of them are either encapsulated cells or of Gram-positve cocci. In conclusion, the point-of-end area in distribution systems shows the longer flow distance from the water treatment plants, along with a greater diversity and a higher level of heterotrophic bacteria, due to the significant decay of free chlorine residuals.

Cutter deflections in the ball-end milling process is one of the main causes of the machining errors on a free-form surface. In order to avoid machining errors in this process, a methodology avoiding these machining errors on the free-form surfaces has been developed. In this method, feedrates in the finish cuts are adjusted for the prevention of machining errors. A model for the prediction of machining errors on the free-form surface is analytically derived as a function of feed and normal vector at the surface of contact point by the cutter. This model is applied to the dertermination of the adjusted feedrates which satisfy the machining tolerance of the surface. In the finish cuts of a simple curved surface, the suggested model is examined by the measurements of the generated machining error on this surface. And also, this surface is machined with the adjusted feedrates for the given machining tolerance. The measured machining errors on this surface are compared with the given tolerance. In this comparisons, it is shown that the predicted errors are fairly good agreement with the test results.
A method to determine an optimal temperature trajectory that guarantees polymer products having controlled molecular weight distribution and desired values of molecular weight is presented. The coordinate transformation method and the optimal control theory are applied to a batch PMMA polymerization system to calculate the optimal temperature trajectory. Coordinate transformation method converts the original fixed-end-point, free-end-time problem to a free-end-point, fixed-end-time problem. The idea is that by making the reactor temperature track the optimal temperature trajectory one may be able to produce polymer products having the prespecified physical property in a minimum time. The on-line control experiments with the PID control algorithm have been conducted to establish the validity of the scheme proposed in this study. The experimental results show that prespecified polymer product could be obtained with tracking the calculated optimal temperature trajectory.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the natural frequencies and mode shapes of tapered beams with general boundary condition(translational and rotational elastic support) at one end and carrying a tip mass with translational elastic support at the other end. The beam model is based on the classical Bernoulli-Euler beam theory which neglects the effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation. The governing differential equation for the free vibrations of linearly tapered beams is solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditions. Numerical results are compared with existing solutions by other methods for cases in which they are available. The lowest three natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes are calculated over a wide range of section ratio, dimensionless spring constant, and mass ratio.

This paper deals with free vibrations of the tapered beams with the constant surface area. The surface area of the objective beams are always held constant regardless shape functions of the cross-sectional depth. The shape functions are chosen as the linear and parabolic ones. Ordinary differential equations governing free vibrations of such beams are derived and solved numerically for determining the natural frequencies. In the numerical examples, hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped and clamped-clamped end constraints are considered. As the numerical results, the relationships between non-dimensional frequency parameters and various beam parameters such as section ratio, surface area ratio, end constraint and taper type are reported in tables and figures. Especially, section ratios of the strongest beam are calculated, under which the maximum frequencies are achieved.

This paper presents a new kinematic control strategy for serial redundant manipulators which gives repeatability in the joint space when the end-effector undergoes some general cyclic motions. Theoretical development has been accomplished by deriving a new inverse kinematic equation that is based on springs being conceptually located in the joints of the manipulator. Although some inverse kinematic equations for serial redundant manipulators have been derived by many researchers, the new strategy is the first to include the free angles of torsional springs and the free lengths of the translational springs. This is important because it ensures repeatability in the joint space of a serial redundant manipulator whose end-effector undergoes a cyclic type motion. Numerical verification for repeatability is done in terms of Lie Bracket Condition. Choices for the free angle and torsional stiffness of a joint (or the free length and translational stiffness) are made based upon the mechanical limits of the joints.
Reconstruction of the pharynx and cervical esophagus is a difficult surgical problem. A successful case of reconstruction of cervical esophagus by free jejunal graft upon a 23-year-old female who had stricture in the pharynx and cervical esophagus after ingestion of hydrochloric acid is presented. This procedure was done after the primary traditional reconstruction with right sided colon had resulted in restenosis due to necrosis of the cervical portion of the graft. A proximal jejunal segment, about 12 cm in length was isolated for free graft preserving its vascular arcade. Both superior thyroid artery and vein were anastomosed to the graft vessels in end to end by continuous suture of 8-0 monophil. Nylon. The postoperative course was uneventful. The patient has been followed for 4 months after operation and she can eat every kind of food without dysphagia. We think free jejunal graft offers an excellent and safe method of reconstructing cervical esophagus and pharynx with definitive advantages over other traditional techniques.

This paper deals with free vibrations of the parabolic hollowed beam-columns with constant volume. The cross sections of beam-column taper are the hollowed regular polygons whose depths are varied with the parabolic functional fashion. Volumes of the objective beam-columns are always held constant regardless given geometrical conditions. Ordinary differential equation governing free vibrations of such beam-columns are derived and solved numerically for determining the natural frequencies. In the numerical examples, hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped and clamped-clamped end constraints are considered. As the numerical results, the relationships between non-dimensional frequency parameters and various beam-column parameters such as end constraints, side number, section ratio, thickness ratio and axial load are reported in tables and figures.
