  • Here were continue the MHD study started by Santillan et al (1999) for the interaction of high-velocity clouds (HVCs) with the magnetized thick gaseous disk of our Galaxy. We use the MHD code ZEUS-3D and perform 3D-numerical simulations of this interaction, and study the formation of head-tail structures in HVCs. Our results show that clouds located above 2 kpc from mindplane present velocity and column density gradients with a cometary structure that is similar to those observed in 21 cm emission

  • 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Project) is defining UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication System) releases which span the transition from GSM/UMTS coexistence to All-IP UMTS networks. The deployment of an UMTS network depends, in the first place, on the intended service offerings and the release an operator chooses to start service with. Other key decisions in-fluencing UMTS deployment relate to the timing of the functional enhancements and capacity increases along the economic life of the network. This paper gives an overview on the architectural and technical options for UMTS deployment. It also outlines the methodology underlying the business plan aimed at estimating the returns from investments in the UMTS infrastructure, thus helping to tune operators’ strategies for UMTS deployment.

  • The problem of pricing for a telecommunication network is investigated with respect to the users' sensitivity to the pricing structure. A functional optimization problem is formulated, in order to compute price reallocations as functions of data collected in real time during the network evolution. No a-priori knowledge about the users' utility functions and the traffic demands is required, since adaptive reactions to the network conditions are sought in real time. To this aim, a neural approximation technique is studied to exploit an optimal pricing control law, able to counteract traffic changes with a small on-line computational effort. Owing to the generality of the mathematical framework under investigation, our control methodology can be generalized for other decision variables and cost functionals.

  • We discuss some typical procedures to measure the efficiency of telecommand authentication systems in space missions. As a case-study, the Packet Telecommand Standard used by the European Space Agency is considered. It is shown that, although acceptable under well consolidated evaluation suites, the standard presents some flaws particularly in regard to the randomness level of the pre-signature. For this reason, some possible changes are proposed and evaluated that should be able to improve performance, even reducing the on-board elaboration time.

  • A new constitutive model for the representation of the seismic behaviour of steel bars including hardening phenomena is presented. The model takes into account relative slip between bars and concrete, necessary for the estimation of the structural behaviour of r.c. elements and of the level of strain induced by earthquakes on bars. The present work provides the analytical formulation of the post-yielding behaviour of reinforcements, resulting in a continuous axial stress-slip relationship to be implemented in engineering software. The efficacy of the model is proved through the application to a cantilever column, for whose bars the constitutive law is derived.

  • Reinforced Concrete beams with tension and compression softening material constitutive laws are studied. Energy-based and non-local regularisation techniques are presented and applied to a R.C. element. The element characteristics (sectional tangent stiffness matrix, element tangent stiffness matrix restoring forces) are directly derived from their symbolic expressions through numerical integration. In this way the same spatial grid allows us to obtain a non-local strain estimate and also to sample the contributions to the element stiffness matrix. Three examples show the spurious behaviors due to the strain localization and the stabilization effects given by the regularisation techniques, both in the case of tension and compression softening. The possibility to overestimate the ultimate load level when the non-local strain measure is applied to a non softening material is shown.

  • Ultra Wide Bandwidth (UWB) spread-spectrum techniques will playa key role in short range wireless connectivity supporting high bit rates availability and low power consumption. UWB can be used in the design of wireless local and personal area networks providing advanced integrated multimedia services to nomadic users within hot-spot areas. Thus the assessment of the possible interference caused by UWB devices on already existing narrowband and wideband systems is fundamental to ensure nonconflicting coexistence and, therefore, to guarantee acceptance of UWB technology worldwide. In this paper, we study the coexistence issues between an indoor UWB-based system (hot-spot) and outdoor point to point (PP) links and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) systems operating in the 3.5 - 5.0 GHz frequency range. We consider a realistic UWB master/slave system architecture and we show through computer simulation, that in all practical cases UWB system can coexist with PP and FWA without causing any dangerous interference.

  • Measurements of the isotopic contents of spent nuclear fuel provide experimental data that are a prerequisite for validating computer codes and nuclear data for many spent fuel applications. Under the auspices of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) and guidance of the Expert Group on Assay Data of Spent Nuclear Fuel of the NEA Working Party on Nuclear Criticality Safety, a new database of expanded spent fuel isotopic compositions has been compiled. The database, Spent Fuel Compositions (SFCOMPO) 2.0, includes measured data for more than 750 fuel samples acquired from 44 different reactors and representing eight different reactor technologies. Measurements for more than 90 isotopes are included. This new database provides data essential for establishing the reliability of code systems for inventory predictions, but it also has broader potential application to nuclear data evaluation. The database, together with adjoint based sensitivity and uncertainty tools for transmutation systems developed to quantify the importance of nuclear data on nuclide concentrations, are described.

  • During the last decade the role of minimally invasive surgery has been increased, especially with the introduction of the robotic system in the surgical field. The most important advantages of robotic system are represented by the wristed instrumentation and the depth perception, which can overcome the limitation of traditional thoracoscopy. However, some data still exist in literature with regard to robotic lobectomy. The majority of papers are focused on its safety and feasibility, but further studies with long follow-ups are necessary in order to assess the oncologic outcomes. We reviewed the literature on robotic lobectomy, with the main aim to better define the role of robotic system in the clinical practice.
