  • A wide variety of applications of imaging spectrometer have been proved using data from airborne systems. The Compact Airborne Imaging Spectrometer System (CAISS) was jointly designed and developed as the airborne hyperspectral imaging system by Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) and ELOP inc., Israel. The primary mission of the CAISS is to acquire and provide full contiguous spectral information with high spatial resolution for advanced applications in the field of remote sensing. The CAISS consists of six physical units; the camera system, the gyro-stabilized mount, the jig, the GPS/INS, the power inverter and distributor, and the operating system. These subsystems are to be tested and verified in the laboratory before the flight. Especially the camera system of the CAISS has to be calibrated and validated with the calibration equipments such as the integrating sphere and spectral lamps. To improve data quality and its availability, it is the most important to understand the mechanism of imaging spectrometer system and the radiometric and spectral characteristics. The several performance tests of the CAISS were conducted in the camera system level. This paper presents the major characteristics of the CAISS, and summarizes the results of performance tests in the camera system level.

  • The temporal super resolution is a method for increasing the frame rate. Electro-optical sensors are used in various surveillance and reconnaissance weapons systems, and the spatial resolution and temporal resolution of the required electro-optical sensors vary according to the performance requirement of each weapon system. Because most image sensors capture images at 30~60 frames/second, it is necessary to increase the frame rate when the target moves and changes rapidly. This paper proposes a method to increase the frame rate using color channel extrapolation. Using a DMD, one frame of a general camera was adjusted to have different consecutive exposure times for each channel, and the captured image was converted to a single channel image with an increased frame rate. Using the optical flow method, a virtual channel image was generated for each channel, and a single channel image with an increased frame rate was converted to a color channel image. The performance of the proposed temporal super resolution method was confirmed by the simulation.

  • AMachine vision is a promising tool for the autonomous guidance of farm machinery. Conventional CCD camera for the machine vision needs a desktop PC to install a frame grabber, however, a web camera is ready to use when plugged in the USB port. A web camera with a notebook PC can replace existing camera system. Autonomous steering control system of this research was intended to be used for combine harvester. If the web camera can recognize cut/uncut edge of crop, which will be the reference for steering control, then the position of the machine can be determined in terms of lateral offset and heading angle. In this research, a white line was used as a cut/uncut edge of crop for steering control. Image processing algorithm including capturing image in the web camera was developed to determine the desired travel path. An experimental vehicle was constructed to evaluate the system performance. Since the vehicle adopted differential drive steering mechanism, it is steered by the difference of rotation speed between left and right wheels. According to the position of vehicle, the steering algorithm was developed as well. Evaluation tests showed that the experimental vehicle could travel within an RMS error of 0.8cm along the desired path at the ground speed of $9\sim41cm/s$. Even when the vehicle started with initial offsets or tilted heading angle, it could move quickly to track the desired path after traveling $1.52\sim3.5m$. For turning section, i.e., the curved path with curvature of 3 m, the vehicle completed its turning securely.

  • In this study, a scrap sorting system using a color recognition method has been developed to automatically sort out specified materials from a mixture, and its application as been examined in the separation of Cu and other non-ferrous metal parts from a mixture of iron scraps. The system is composed of three parts; measuring, conveying and ejecting parts. The color of scrap surface is recognized by the measuring part consisting of a line-scan camera, light sources and a frame grabber. The recognition is program-controlled by a image processing algorithms, and thus only the scrap part of designated color is separated by the use of air nozzles. In addition, the light system is designed to meet a high speed of sorting process with a frequency-variable inverter and the air nozzled ejectors are to be operated by an I/O interface communication with a hardware controller. In the functional tests of the system, its efficiency in the recognition of Cu scraps from its mixture with Fe ones reaches to more than 90%, and that in the separation more than 80% at a conveying speed of 25 m/min. Therefore, it is expected that the system can be commercialized in the industry of shredder makers if a high efficiency ejecting system is realized.

  • We propose a novel image segmentation and segment-based stereo matching technique using color, depth, and motion information. Proposed technique firstly splits reference images into foreground region or background region using depth information from depth camera. Then each region is segmented into small segments with color information. Moreover, extracted segments in current frame are tracked in the next frame in order to maintain depth consistency between frames. The initial depth from the depth camera is also used to set the depth search range for stereo matching. Proposed segment-based stereo matching technique was compared with conventional one without foreground and background separation and other conventional one without motion tracking of segments. Simulation results showed that the improvement of segment extraction and depth estimation consistencies by proposed technique compared to conventional ones especially at the static background region.

  • An arrow produced by a manufacturing process is evaluated using the archer's paradox and the intensity of the impact point. The accuracy rate in particular is changed by the arrow's vibrational movement, which is called the archer's paradox. The archer's paradox occurs not only in the right, left, upward, and downward directions, but in all directions. The optimized value of the archer's paradox has not been studied yet. This paper proposes to measure the archer's paradox to determine its optimized value. Measuring the archer's paradox using a high-speed camera is expensive, and it is difficult to translate the result to a numerical value. However, the device for measuring the archer's paradox proposed in this paper is inexpensive, and the results are easy to convert to a numerical value. Therefore, this device is more suitable for optimization of the archer's paradox than a high-speed camera. In this paper, we propose to measure the size of the paradox using multiple frames, which can measure the position of an arrow moving at a speed of 300km/h to within millimeters. We calculate the size of the paradox experimentally using the measured location in each frame. This value is not an approximate value, but an accurate numerical value.

  • This paper is proposed to algorithm for measuring traffic information automatically, for example, volume count, speed and occupancy rate, from CCTV camera images installed on highway, add to function of image detectors which can be collected the traffic information. Recently the method of traffic informations are counted in lane one by one, but this manner is occurred critical errors by occlusion frequently in case of passing larger vehicles(bus, truck etc.) and is impossible to measure in the 8 lanes of highway. In this paper, installed the detection area include with all lanes, traffic informations are collected using tracking algorithm with passing vehicles individually in this detection area, thus possible to detect all of 8 lanes. The experiment have been conducted two different real road scenes for 20 minutes. For the experiments, the images are provided with CCTV camera which was installed at Kiheung Interchange upstream of Kyongbu highway, and video recording images at Chungkye Tunnel. For image processing, images captured by frame-grabber board 30 frames per second, $640{\times}480$ pixels resolution and 256 gray-levels to reduce the total amount of data to be interpreted.

  • A quantitative flow visualization technique was developed to measure velocity and temperature fields simultaneously in a two-dimensional cross section of thermo-fluid flows. Thermochromic liquid crystal(TLC) particles are used as temperature sensor and velocity tracers. Illuminating a thermo-fluid flow with a thin sheet of white light, the reflected colors from the TLC particles in the flow were captured simultaneously by two CCD cameras; a 3-chip CCD color camera for temperature field measurement and a black and white CCD camera for velocity field measurement. Variations of temperature field were measured by using a HSI true color image processing system and TLC solution. The relationship between the hue values of TLC color image and real temperature was obtained and this calibration curve was used to measure the true temperature under the same camera and illumination condition. The velocity field was obtained by using a 2-frame PTV technique using the concept of match-probability to track true velocity vectors from two consecutive image frames. These two techniques were applied at the same time to the unsteady thermal-fluid flow in a Hele-Shaw cell to measure the temperature and velocity field simultaneously and some results are discussed.
