Elasto-plastic Post-buckling Analysis of Spatial Framed Structures using Improved Plastic Hinge Theory (개선된 소성힌지이론을 이용한 공간 뼈대구조물의 탄-소성 후좌굴 해석)

  • An efficient numerical method is developed to estimate the elasto-plastic post-buckling strength of space-framed structures. The inelastic ultimate strength of beam-columns and frames is evaluated by the parametric study. Applying the improved plastic hinge analysis that evaluate the gradual stiffness decrease effects due to spread of plasticity, elasto-plastic post-buckling behavior of steel frames is investigated considering the various residual stress distributions. Introducing the plastification parameter that represent pread of plasticity in the element and performing parametric study of equivalent element force and member idealization, finite-element solutions for the elasto-plastic analysis of space frames are compared with the results by plastic region analysis, shell elements and experimental results.

  • This is to investigate the physical properties of the commercially available Soft, Thomas, Minerva, and Philadelphia cervical braces which are widely used in orthopedics, neurosurgery, and rehabilitation medicine clinics as assisting devices or physical stabilization of cervical vertebrates, to use as a basic data or designing new type brace. Tensile strengths were observed by universal mechanical measuring device and Thomas brace required the highest stress to break by tensile stress. Durabilities against continuous frictional forces were also determined, and Minerva brace demonstrated the longest frictional time until being perforated. and Thomas/minerva braces are superior to the other braces in the effect of the material property on the skin tissue, as the animal test. According to these results, polyethylene is recommendable as a frame and preparation of pores in the material is favorable to provide ventilation to skin.

  • In this paper, practical nonlinear inelastic analysis method of 3-dimensional steel structures accounting for gradual yielding with fibers on a section is developed. Geometric nonlinearities of member(p-$\delta$) and frame(p-$\Delta$) are accounted for by using stability functions. Residual stresses are considered by assigning initial stresses to the fiber on the section. The elastic core in a section is investigated at every loading step to determine the axial and bending stiffness reduction. The strain reversal effect is captured by investigating the stress change of each fiber. The proposed analysis proves to be useful in applying for practical analysis and design of three-dimensional steel frames.

  • Recently deck crane of multi purpose cargo vessel (MPCV) is designed to posi¬tion in side instead of in the center line of the upper deck with a view to reduce the transportation cost and shipbuilding cost by shortening the length of ship. In this paper, the crane post was at first designed according to the crane maker’s specification and parent ship and the structure is analysed with Finite Ele¬ment Method. Through the careful reviews on the result of analysis, the final design of crane post was modified. The crane post is designed as a cylindrical in upper part and hexagonal in lower part instead of cylindrical on the whole as before. The connecting part of crane post is designed with the form of mixture of the cylinderical and hexagonal. Since the center of cylindrical and hexagonal section are not on the same line, it is expected to have the stress concentration. So, in order to attenuate the concentrated stress on the connecting part, the upper and lower parts was stiffened by inserting plate to enlarge the area of welding. The structure of deck part includes the tank side floor which is depend on the lower structure of the crane post that would support the force of the crane post by placing with 1.5 frame interval of the vertical plate.

Isolation of N-Acetylmuramoyl-L-Alanine Amidase Gene (amiB) from Vibrio anguillarum and the Effect of amiB Gene Deletion on Stress Responses

  • We identified a gene encoding the N-acetylmuramoyl L-alanine amidase (amiB) of Vibrio anguillarum, which catalyzes the degradation of peptidoglycan in bacteria. The entire open reading frame (ORF) of the amiB gene was composed of 1,722 nucleotides and 573 amino acids. The deduced amino acid sequence of AmiB showed a modular structure with two main domains; an N-terminal region exhibiting an Ami domain and three highly conserved, continuously repeating LysM domains in the C-terminal portion. An amiB mutant was constructed by homologous recombination to study the biochemical function of the AmiB protein in V. anguillarum. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed morphological differences, and that the mutant strain formed trimeric and tetrameric unseparated cells, suggesting that this enzyme is involved in the separation of daughter cells after cell division. Furthermore, inactivation of the amiB gene resulted in a marked increase of sensitivity to oxidative stress and organic acids.

  • In the prestressed concrete structures, stresses are gradually redistributed with time due to the creep and shrinkage of concrete and the stress relaxation of prestressed steel. In this study a numerical procedure and computer program is developed to analyze the behavior of prestressed concrete structures considering the time-dependent properties of material. It accounts for the aging, creep and shrinkage of concrete and the stress relaxation of prestressed steel. The structural model uses two dimensional plane frame elements with three nodal degree of freedom and is analyzed based on the finite element method. Member cross section can consist of concrete, reinforcement and prestressing steel. Two different set of equations for the prediction of time-dependent material properties of concrete are presented, which are ACI, CEB-FIP. Analytical studies for different examples of prestressed concrete structures have been performed to demonstrated the capabilities and practical applicabilities of the developed program.

  • A size-dependent novel hyperbolic shear deformation theory of simply supported functionally graded beams is presented in the frame work of the non-local strain gradient theory, in which the stress accounts for only the nonlocal strain gradients stress field. The thickness stretching effect (${\varepsilon}_z{\neq}0$) is also considered here. Elastic coefficients and length scale parameter are assumed to vary in the thickness direction of functionally graded beams according to power-law form. The governing equations are derived using the Hamilton principle. The closed-form solutions for exact critical buckling loads of nonlocal strain gradient functionally graded beams are obtained using Navier's method. The derived results are compared with those of strain gradient theory.

  • This study presents the mechanical behavior of a ventilating window (a tsunami damper) on the building wall of a nuclear power plant. The window, which is under development, is used to ventilate a machinery room and the building under normal conditions, but it also provides a safety barrier for critical equipment against a tsunami caused by an earthquake. A finite element analysis was conducted to investigate the deflection and the stress distribution of the window under given loading conditions. With symmetry, a one-quarter portion of one window was modeled, and the pressure due to a great tide is assumed to be 7 bar. A structural analysis of the assembled frame, composed of a blade and casing, was also conducted using contact conditions to find the stress and strain configurations caused by the applied pressure.

  • Calmodulin, a $Ca^{2+}$-binding protein, has no enzyme activity. It combines with $Ca^{2+}$ and makes variable proteins to an active form. Calmodulin 2 is a ubiquitous protein in plants. To investigate the defense mechanism against various stresses, a clone encoding a calmodulin 2 protein was isolated from a cDNA library prepared from taproot mRNAs of Codonopsis lanceolata. The cDNA, designated CICAM2, is 719 nucleotides long and has an open reading frame of 450 bp with a deduced amino acid sequence of 149 residues. The deduced amino acid sequence of CICAM2 showed a high similarity with calmodulins of P. x hybrida (P27163) 97%, N. tabacum (BAB61908) 97%, S. tuberosum (AAA74405) 96%, Z. mays (CAA74307) 92%, C. richardii (AF510075) 93%, M. truncatula (AAM81203) 91%, and G. max (P62163) 91%. The transcriptional expression of the CICAM2 gene, was gradually increased by the CaCl$_2$ treatment. Whereas its expression And it was gradually decreased in the cold stress treatment.ent.

Molecular Characterization and Expression of CuZn-superoxide Dismutase (PSOD1) from Populus alba${\times}$Populus glandulosa

  • A cDNA, PSOD1, encoding cytosolic copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (CuZn-SOD) was cloned and characterized from a full length cDNA library prepared from Populus alba${\times}$Populus glandulosa cultured in vitro. A PSOD1, is 725 nucleotides long and has an open reading frame of 459 bp with 152 amino acid residues (pI 5.43). The deduced amino acid sequence of PSOD1 perfect matched to the previously reported CuZn-SOD (CAC33845.1). Consensus amino acid residues (His-45, -47, -62, -70, -79, -119) were involved in Cu-, Cu/Zn-, and Zn- binding ligands. The deduced amino acid sequence of PSOD1 exhibited the high level of similarity from 100 to $85\%$ among previously registered SOD genes. The expression of PSOD1 in poplar increased at the 1 mM $H_{2}O_2$ and drought stress during 30 min and 60 min, but the ozone treated poplar increased at 30 min in the early time and then decreased at 60 min.
