Adaptive Frame Rate Up-Conversion Algorithms using Block Complexity Information

  • This paper proposes new frame rate up-conversion algorithms. Adaptive motion estimation based on block complexity information are used to obtain more accurate motion vectors. Because the information on block complexity is extracted from the motion estimation prediction size from the original frame, additional computational complexity is not imparted. In experimental results, the proposed algorithms provide robust frame interpolation performance for whole test sequences. Also, the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm is reduced to a benchmark algorithm.

  • A new video interpolation technique based on variable skip rate of video sequence is proposed in this paper. in the proposed technique. the determination whether a frame is skipped or not is done by the degree of motion complexity of the frame. If the motion complexity of a frame is low the frame is skipped. otherwise it is coded and transmitted. To determine the motion complexity of a frame a new technique using MEF (moving edge in frame),the set of pixels considered as moving edges in a frame. is introduced. In the course of decoding and interpolating of receiver., the motion field is segmented. For the purpose of dividing vector field morphological filtering is applied. Morphological filtering also used to smooth the boundaries between the changed and unchanged region. In the simulation results, the proposed technique shows higher quality and lower fluctuation of picture quality than the conventional techniques on conditioning of the same bit rate.

Low-Complexity MPEG-4 Shape Encoding towards Realtime Object-Based Applications

  • Although frame-based MPEG-4 video services have been successfully deployed since 2000, MPEG-4 video coding is now facing great competition in becoming a dominant player in the market. Object-based coding is one of the key functionalities of MPEG-4 video coding. Real-time object-based video encoding is also important for multimedia broadcasting for the near future. Object-based video services using MPEG-4 have not yet made a successful debut due to several reasons. One of the critical problems is the coding complexity of object-based video coding over frame-based video coding. Since a video object is described with an arbitrary shape, the bitstream contains not only motion and texture data but also shape data. This has introduced additional complexity to the decoder side as well as to the encoder side. In this paper, we have analyzed the current MPEG-4 video encoding tools and proposed efficient coding technologies that reduce the complexity of the encoder. Using the proposed coding schemes, we have obtained a 56 percent reduction in shape-coding complexity over the MPEG-4 video reference software (Microsoft version, 2000 edition).

  • In this paper, frame rate up conversion (FRUC) algorithm considering the direction and magnitude of identical motion vectors is proposed. extended bilateral motion estimation (EBME) has higher complexity than bilateral motion estimation (BME). By using average magnitude of motion vector with x and y direction respectively, dynamic frame and static frame are decided. We reduce complexity to decide EBME. also, After we compare the direction and magnitude of identical motion vectors, We reduce complexity to decide motion vector smoothing(MVS). Experimental results show that this proposed algorithm has fast computation and better peak singnal to noise ratio(PSNR) results compared with EBME.

Improving Encoder Complexity and Coding Method of the Split Information in HEVC (HEVC에서 인코더 계산 복잡도 개선 및 분할 정보 부호화 방법)

  • This paper proposes the coding method to predict the split structure of LCU in the current frame on the basis of the reference frame or temporally-previous frame. HEVC encoder determines split structure according to image characteristics in LCU which is an basic element of CU. The split structure of the current LCU is very similar to the split structure of collocated LCU in the reference frame or temporally-previous frame. Thus, this paper proposes the method to reduce the encoder computational complexity by predicting split structure of the current LCU on the basis of that of collocated LCU in the reference frame or temporally-previous frame. And it also proposes the method to reduce the BD-Bitrate by coding after the prediction of the CU split information. The simulation results of changing only encoder showed that the mean of encoder computational complexity was lower by 21.3%, the decoder computational complexity was negligible change and the BD-Bitrate increase by the maximum of 0.6%. Also, the method changing encoder, bitstream, and decoder improves the mean of encoder computational complexity was lower by 22%, the decoder computational complexity was negligible change and the BD-Bitrate is improved to the maximum of 0.3%. When compared with the conventional method, indicating that the proposed method is superior.

Frame Rate up-conversion Algorithm using Adaptive Overlapped Block Motion Compensation (적응적 중첩 블록 움직임 보상을 이용한 프레임 율 향상 알고리즘)

  • In this paper, a new bilateral frame rate up-conversion algorithm using adaptive overlapped block motion compensation is proposed. In this algorithm, the adaptive overlapped block motion compensation is based on the motion complexity of the reference region. As the motion complexity is determined by the size of the previously coded motion estimation prediction, the overlapped block motion compensation method is selected without any additional computational complexity. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm provides better image quality than conventional methods both objectively and subjectively.

Complexity Reduction of an Adaptive Loop Filter Based on Local Homogeneity

  • This paper proposes an algorithm for adaptive loop filter (ALF) complexity reduction in the decoding process. In the original ALF algorithm, filtering for I frames is performed in the frame unit, and thus, all of the pixels in a frame are filtered if the current frame is an I frame. The proposed algorithm is designed on top of the local gradient calculation. On both the encoder side and the decoder side, homogeneous areas are checked and skipped in the filtering process, and the filter coefficient calculation is only performed in the inhomogeneous areas. The proposed algorithm is implemented in Joint Exploration Model (JEM) version 3.0 future video coding reference software. The proposed algorithm is applied for frame-level filtering and intra configuration. Compared with the JEM 3.0 anchor, the proposed algorithm has 0.31%, 0.76% and 0.73% bit rate loss for luma (Y) and chroma (U and V), respectively, with about an 8% decrease in decoding time.

Frame Synchronization Algorithm for LDPC Coded Burst Systems

  • We present a frame synchronization algorithm for lowdensity parity-check (LDPC) coded burst transmissions, which combines a conventional pilots-assisted frame synchronization algorithm and a code-aided algorithm based on the mean magnitude of the soft outputs from the LDPC decoder. With moderate computational complexity, the proposed algorithm is more efficient in bandwidth than conventional pilots-assisted algorithms. When compared with other code-aided algorithms, the proposed algorithm offers a better trade-off between complexity and performance. Simulation results in the case of an 8-PSK system with (1944, 972) LDPC code show that the proposed algorithm can achieve a performance equivalent to that of the perfect frame synchronization, with a bandwidth efficiency loss of 0.06 dB due to the use of pilot symbols.

Lossless Frame Memory Compression with Low Complexity based on Block-Buffer Structure for Efficient High Resolution Video Processing (고해상도 영상의 효과적인 처리를 위한 블록 버퍼 기반의 저 복잡도 무손실 프레임 메모리 압축 방법)

  • This study addresses a low complexity and lossless frame memory compression algorithm based on block-buffer structure for efficient high resolution video processing. Our study utilizes the block-based MHT (modified Hadamard transform) for spatial decorrelation and AGR (adaptive Golomb-Rice) coding as an entropy encoding stage to achieve lossless image compression with low complexity and efficient hardware implementation. The MHT contains only adders and 1-bit shift operators. As a result of AGR not requiring additional memory space and memory access operations, AGR is effective for low complexity development. Comprehensive experiments and computational complexity analysis demonstrate that the proposed algorithm accomplishes superior compression performance relative to existing methods, and can be applied to hardware devices without image quality degradation as well as negligible modification of the existing codec structure. Moreover, the proposed method does not require the memory access operation, and thus it can reduce costs for hardware implementation and can be useful for processing high resolution video over Full HD.

Power-Minimizing DVFS Algorithm Using Estimation of Video Frame Decoding Complexity (영상 프레임 디코딩 복잡도 예측을 통한 DVFS 전력감소 방식)

  • Recently, intensive research has been performed for reducing video decoder energy consumption, especially based on DVFS (Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling) technique. Our previous work [1] has proposed the optimal DVFS algorithm for energy reduction in video decoders. In spite of the mathematical optimality of the algorithm, the precondition of known frame decoding cycle/complexity limits its application to some realistic scenarios. This paper overcomes this limitation by frame data size-based estimation of frame decoding complexity. The proposed decoding complexity estimation method shows over 90% accuracy. And with this estimation method and buffer underflow margin of around 20% of frame size, almost same power consumption reduction performance as the optimal algorithm can be achieved.
