In The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, the general yield brittle fractures were observed in beam-column connections of steel building frames. Among many influencing factors which affect the general yield brittle fracture, it can be considered that fracture toughness has substantial effects. Some studies are making clear the required toughness for the base metal and the weld metal, but general values are not proposed. Moreover, it seems that it is also important to pay attention to the toughness decrease in the weld heat affected zone (weld HAZ), because the toughness decrease occurs in the HAZs of mild steel. In this paper, the relationship between toughness of simulated HAZs of "the rolled steels for building structures (SN)" and the weld heat-input limit of the SN steel are investigated, in an attempt to provide the required toughness for HAZs. The relationships between the increase of the hardness value and toughness, and changes of microstructure after weld heat-input are also discussed. The main results are summarized as follows. 1) The SN400B can keep its toughness at higher heat-inputs compare to the SN490Bs. 2) The steel grade, which becomes harder than other steel grades at the same heat-input, has smaller absorbed energy and smaller limit of heat-input. 3) The weld heat-input limit of the SN400B and the SN490B are proposed separately for some required toughness values.

In this paper, an investigation was performed on the dynamic interlaminar fracture toughness of CFRP(carbon filber rein-forcement plastics). Specimens used in this experiments are CF/PEEK laminated plates. In this experiments, Split Hopkin-sons Bar(SHPE) tes was apply to dynamic and notched flexure test. The model II fracture toughness of each unidirectional CFRP was estimated by the analyzed deflection of the specimen and J-integral with the measured impulsive load and reac-tions at the supported points. As an experimental results the vibration amplitude of [$0^{\circ}_10 /F_4 0^{\circ}_10 $] j-aminates appear more than that of [$0^{\circ}_10 /F_2 0^{\circ}_10 $ laminates for the j-integral and displacement velocity at a measuring point. Also, it is thought that the dynamic fracture toughness of two kind specimen(CF/PEEK) with the crease of displacement velocity becomes great at a measuring point with in the range of measurement.
This paper describes the characteristics for mode I interlaminar and intralaminar fractures of cross-ply carbon/epoxy composite laminates. We obtained mode I interlaminar fracture toughness and mode I intralaminar fracture toughness based on energy release rate and Finite Element Analysis (FEA). For this purpose, the Double-Cantilever Beam (DCB) test and FEA were performed for cross-ply DCB specimens. Also, the behavior of load-displacement curve at the interlaminar and intralaminar crack was analyzed. The results show that mode I intralaminar fracture toughness was lower than mode I interlaminar fracture toughness in the cross-ply DCB specimen.
In this paper, mode I fracture toughness of rock was determined by direct and indirect methods using Particle Flow Code simulation. Direct methods are compaction tension (CT) test and hollow centre cracked quadratic sample (HCCQS). Indirect methods are notched Brazilian disk (NBD) specimen, the semi-circular bend (SCB) specimen, hollow centre cracked disc (HCCD), the single edge-notched round bar in bending (SENRBB) specimen and edge notched disk (END). It was determined that which one of indirect fracture toughness values is close to direct one. For this purpose, initially calibration of PFC was undertaken with respect to data obtained from Brazilian laboratory tests to ensure the conformity of the simulated numerical models response. Furthermore, the simulated models in five introduced indirect tests were cross checked with the results from direct tests. By using numerical testing, the failure process was visually observed. Discrete element simulations demonstrated that the macro fractures in models are caused by microscopic tensile breakages on large numbers of bonded discs. Mode I fracture toughness of rock in direct test was less than other tests results. Fracture toughness resulted from semi-circular bend specimen test was close to direct test results. Therefore semi-circular bend specimen can be a proper test for determination of Mode I fracture toughness of rock in absence of direct test.

The present study addresses the direct and indirect methods of determining the mode-I fracture toughness of concrete using experimental tests and particle flow code. The direct method used is compaction tensile test and the indirect methods are notched Brazilian disc test, semi-circular bend specimen test, and hollow center cracked disc. The experiments were carried out to determine which indirect method yields the fracture toughness closer to the one obtained by the direct method. In the numerical analysis, the PFC model was first calibrated with respect to the data obtained from the Brazilian laboratory test. The crack paths observed in the simulated tests were in reasonable accordance with experimental results. The discrete element simulations demonstrated that the macro fractures in the models are caused by microscopic tensile breakages on large numbers of bonded particles. The mode-I fracture toughness in the direct tensile test was smaller than the indirect testing results. The fracture toughness obtained from the SCB test was closer to the direct test results. Hence, the semi-circular bend test is recommended as a proper experiment for determination of mode-I fracture toughness of concrete in the absence of direct tests.
The thermal shock resistance has been investigated and compared in three hot-work tool steels. The resistance to thermal shock is first of all a matter of good toughness and ductility. Therefore, a proper hot-work tool steel should be characterized by high fracture strength and high temperature toughness. In this study, new test method is proposed to measure the thermal shock resistance. New method is basically based on Uddeholm' thermal shock test but some modification has been properly applied. Based on these results, some critical temperature($T_{fractures}$) at which fracture occur can be measured to characterize the thermal resistance of the materials. The specific values of ${\Delta}T$, the temperature difference between holding temperature and $T_{fractures}$, has been successfully used as a measure of the thermal shock resistance in this study, the results showed that the thermal shock method used in this study was properly modified.

The study investigated effects of residual stresses and Charpy impact energy on brittle fractures of the butt weld between the valve and the piping, and of the valve body in nuclear power plants via a linear elastic fracture mechanics approach in the ASME B&PV Code, Sec.XI and finite element analysis. Weld residual stress in a butt weld between close check valve and piping, and residual stress in the valve due to casting process were assumed to be proportional to yield strength of base metal. Operating stresses in the butt weld and the valve body were calculated using approximate engineering formulae and finite element analysis, respectively. Applied stress intensity factors were calculated by assuming postulated cracks with specific sizes and then by substituting the residual stresses and the operating stresses into engineering formulae presented in the ASME B&PV Code, Sec.III. Plane strain fracture toughness was derived by using a correlation between Charpy V-notch impact energy and fracture toughness. Structural integrity of the weld and the body against brittle fracture was assessed by using the applied stress intensity factors, plane strain fracture toughness and the linear elastic fracture mechanics approach. As a result, it was identified that the structural integrity was maintained with decreasing the residual stress levels and increasing the Charpy V-notch impact energy.

In the welded structure, the most dengerous section is welded parts and almost fractures of welded structure occur from welded parts. Accordingly, in other to prevents of fracture, it is important seeking the fracture behavior of welded parts. In this study as basic investigation of fracture behavior of welded parts, it is investigated that local distribution of fracture toughness and effect of multipass electrode welding, also effect of release of residual stress were investigated, as the subjected. material, the used steel having fatigue history and unused steel were selected. As the result of this study, it is dear that the base metal of unused steel and heat affected zone and weld metal are different each other in fracture toughness, and it seems clear that the weld metal may will become source of fracture because of it having the most low fracture toughness. Especially, in the case of crack occur in the used steel, it will be the most brittle section in the structure because of it having low fracture toughness then weld metal. It affirmation that, if welded parts has not flaw, the multi pass electrode welding effective to improve of fracture toughness, also release of residual stress is none effective to improve of fracture toughness in this study.
For the corrosion protect ion of the natural gas transmission pipelines, two methods are used, cathodic protection and coating technique. In the case of cathodic protection, defects are embrittled by occurring hydrogen at the crack tip or material surface. It is however very important to evaluate whether cracks in the embrittled area can grow or not, especially in weld metal. In this work, on the basis of elastic plastic fracture mechanics, we performed CTOD test ing with varying test conditions, such as the potential and current density. The CTOD of the base steel and weld metal showed a strong dependence of the test conditions. The CTOD decreased with increasing cathodic potential and current density. The morphology of the fracture surface showed quasi-cleavage. Hydrogen introduced fractures, caused by cathodic overprotection.
Fracture mechanics properties of rock materials can he applied to predict the distribution of natural fractures in rock masses, and also to assess the safety of rock slopes and underground structures. In this study, rock fracture toughness and other fracture rrechanics properties of sorne lithologies showing apparently rock-property-controlled distribution of natural fractures were measured. Propagation behaviors of natural and experirnental fractures were also characterized both qualitatively and quantitatively, in terns of the propagation types and sorne statistical parameters. It was concluded that the application of fracture mechanics theories to the ge6logic materials should be based on the geological background and evidences.
