The influence of columnar dendirtes on the mechanical properties of Al-1% Cu alloys as unifirectionalloy solidified under the conditions of controlled crystal growth rate (R) and temperature gradient (G) was investigated. And the change of metallography and mechanical properties when unifirectionalloy solidified alloys and cast alloys were cold-rolled from 10% to 90% in reduction ratio was studied. The results are as follows: 1. The elongation and yield strength of unifirectionalloy solidified alloy are higher then those of cast alloy, but there is a little decrease in ultimate tensile strength. 2. The metallography and mechanical properties are changeable with the primary arm spacings when the unidirectionalloy solidified alloys were cold-rolled from 10% to 90% in reduction ratio. An alloy with larger primary arm spacings was easily changeable in metallography and mechanical properties when it was cold-rolled. 3. The tensile strength of transversely cold-rolled to 90% in reduction ratio was higher then that of longitudionalloy cold-rolled to 90% in reduction ratio. In the case, the fractorgraphs of fractured surface showed that the cast alloy and the unifirectionalloy solidified alloy was ductile-fractured, but the surface of transversely cold-rolled to 90% reduction of unidirection alloy solidified was slip plane qracture.

Fretting damage can be observed in automobile and railway vehicle, fossil and nuclear power plant, aircraft etc. In the present study, railway axle material RSA1 used for evaluation of fretting fatigue life. Plain and fretting fatigue tests were carried out using rotary bending fatigue tester with proving ring and bridge type contact pad. Through these test, the following results are obtained: 1) it is found that the fretting fatigue limit of standard specimen decreased about 37% compared to the plain fatigue limit. 2) The early crack of Shinkansen type specimens initiated in contact area and final fractured below samp=214 MPa. 3) The early crack of all TGV type specimens initiated in rounded area and fractured. 4) Tire tracks and rubbed scars were observed in the oblique crack region and fatigue crack growth region of fracture surface. 5) The wear debris is observed on the contact surface, and oblique cracks at an earlier stage are initiated in contact area. These results can be used as useful data in a structural integrity evaluation of railway axle.
Crown fractures are a common type of dental injuries and very frequently occurred on maxillary anterior teeth, area of requiring a rapid aesthetic recovery. Crown fragment reattachment is a simple and conservative method to restore the fractured teeth. The technique promotes esthetic outcomes as utilizing natural contour, shade, surface texture of teeth and gives mechanical similarity in terms of wear-resistance. Also it gives emotional positive responses to patients and requires less of chair time and costs. This case report presents two cases of crown fragment reattachments on maxillrary anterior teeth, including one complicated crown fracture and one uncomplicated crown fracture. If the fragment is available in cases of crown fractures, reattachment of fragment can be regarded as a predictable alternative. However, it is all the time important that a close conversation informing the patients about the limitations and prognoses of this treatment option.
The failed tube received for this study has been used for approximately 10 year at $330^{\circ}C$ in a steam production boiler tube was fractured in the transversed direction to tube length, and fracture mode was typically intergranulas type without the plastic deformation. The fracture surface was covered by the oxide scale formed from the intermal high pressure steam at high temperature. The microstructure was not nearly thermal-degraded during the service. From this result, we can conclude that the oxide film was proferentialy formed into the grainboundary and this grainboundary oxide film was brittle-fractured by the thermal stress in the longitudinal direction to the tube brittle intergranular fracture mode.

This is a study for the improvement of the fractured lug structure that connects the landing gear to the fuselage of the aircraft using the composite leaf spring landing gear. The lug surface was analyzed to find out the cause of fracture. The lug was destroyed by the crack initiation and propagation under the repeated stresses. The frictional wears of the lug structure were proceeded and that affected adversely to the crack. Also, the square protrusion of the lug has a weak shape to bring about stress concentration. The design changes were conducted and the test was performed to verify changed design results.

The last stage blades of a low pressure (LP) turbine get frequently fractured because of stress corrosion cracking. This is because they operate in a severe corrosive environment that is caused by the impurities dissolved in condensed steam and high stress due to high speed rotation. To improve the reliability of the blades under severe conditions, 12% Cr martensitic stainless steel, having excellent corrosion resistance and higher strength, is widely used as the blade material. This paper shows the result of root cause analysis on a blade which got fractured suddenly during normal operation. Testing of mechanical properties and microstructure examination were performed on the fractured blade and on a blade in sound condition. The results of testing of mechanical properties of the fractured blade showed that the hardness were higher but impact energy were lower, and were not meeting the criteria as per the material certificate specification. This result showed that the fractured blade became embrittled. The branch-type crack was found to have propagated through the grain boundary and components of chloride and sulfur were detected on the fractured surface. Based on these results, the root cause of fracture was confirmed to be stress corrosion cracking.
Now composite resin restoration is clinically accepted in the repair of fractured PFM case, many mechanical surface treatment methods are performed to increase retentive force. The main purpose of this study was to compare the retentive force among the possible surface treatments and to insure the best method for the clinical application to the fractures porecelain and the exposed metal surface. To compare and to analyze the retentive force of repair resin, porcelain specimen were divided into 2 groups, etching group and non-etching group, and etching group were treated with 37% $H_3PO_4$, 1.23% APF, 10% HF and non-etching groups were treated with diamond bur, micro-sandblasasting. Also, metal specimens were divided by 2 groups : one was non-precious metal group which was treated with diamond bur, micro-sandblasting and tin plating and electrolytic etching, the other was precious metal group which was composed of micro-sandblasting treatment only and tin plating treatment with micro-sandblasting. Each specimen had been restored for 48 hours and the bond strength of each specimen was calculated with Universal testing machine. The results were as follows : 1. Porcelain specimen had higher bonding strength than metal specimen for the repair resin(P<0.01). 2. In porcelain specimen, 10% HF etching group had the highest bonding strength among etching and non-etching group. 3. Metal specimen treated with micro-sandblasting had highest bonding strength among the non-sandblasting had hightest bonding strength among the non-precious group, tin plating group had higher bonding strength than micro-sandblasting group between the precious metal groups. 4. Bonding strength of tin plating was increased in precious metal group only.
Zinc Phosphate Cement hand been used for about more than 100 years in luting of cast gold inlay. But many scientists had been trying to develop the new form of luting agent because the ZPC hand shown the lack of adhesiveness on the tooth structure and the toxicity to the pulp tissue. Recently many researches about the surface treatment of the cast body are being done to increase the adhesion of cement to it. The conventional Class I gold inlays were fabricated in the 20 permanent molars. After the internal surface of the cast body was sandblasted with $Al_2O_3$ particles and was tin-plated, the inlays were cemented with adhesive cement [G I cement and resin cement(Super-Bond & $Panavia_{EX}$)] and the evaluation on the adhesion pattern, adhesive strength and the fracture pattern of the adhesive cast gold inlay was compared to that of the cast gold inlay cemented conventionally with ZPC. The results were as follows : 1. The surface roughness of the cast body was increased significantly after sandblasting with the $Al_2O_3$ particles and the tin oxide layer, which was consisted of round particles, came into being. 2. The bond strength was in the order of Super-Bond, ZPC, Fuji I, $Panavia_{EX}$ group. The group cemented with Super-Bond showed statistically greater strength than the other groups(p<0.05). 3. The group cemented with ZPC was fallen apart by principal adhesion failure and that with Fuji I was by complete adhesion failure. But the group with Super-Bond showed pricncipal cohesive failure pattern and in the group with $Panavia_{EX}$, complete cohesive fracture pattern was shown and small protion of tooth structure was fractured out with cast body and the fractured surface showed the figure just as the enamel prism. 4. Various gaps were shown at the pulpal side regardless of little gap at the side walls of the cavity in all groups. Only the Super-Bond was attached to the tooth structure and the other cements were detached from both the tooth and the cast body.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of wetting condition made by drying time on bonding of resin cement to dentin. Freshly extracted bovine teeth were grinded to expose flat dentin surfaces. After the exposed dentin surfaces were treated with pretreatment agents and water rinse, each wetting condition of dentin surfaces was made according to drying times and methods including slight blow bry for I-second by air syringe, blow dry for 20-second by air syringe, and 12-hour dry in desiccator respectively. and then, previously made composite resin specimens were bonded onto each conditioned dentin surface of the specimen using Panavia-21(Kuraray Co.), Bistite(Tokuso Co.), and Choice(use with All bond-2, Bisco Inc.) resin cement according as manufacturer's instruction. Bonded specimens were stored in $37^{\circ}C$ distilled water for 24 hours, then the tensile bond strength was measured, cohesive failure rate was calculated, and fractured dentin surfaces and acrylic rod sides were examined under scanning electron microscope. The result were as follows ; In the group of bonding with Panavia-21 resin cement, higher tensile bond strength was seen in 12-hour dry group than in I-second and 20-second dry group(p<0.01). In the group of bonding with Bistite resin cement, higher tensile bond strength was seen in 1-second dry group than in 20-second and 12-hour dry group(p<0.01). In the group of bonding with Choice resin cement, no significant differences of bond strength under given drying time were seen. Cohesive failure rates derived from the groups of bonding with Panavia-21 and Choice resin cement were increased with the increase of tensile bond strength in each drying time. On SEM examination of fractured surface, adhesive failure mode with fractured resin tags was mostly seen in wet condition with I-second drying time in the group of bonding with Panavia-21 resin cement, mixed failure mode with shortened and fractured resin tag was seen in the group of bonding with Bistite resin cement, and regardless of drying time, and cohesive-adhesive mixed failure mode with fracture of 'Hollow' typed resin tags was mainly seen in the group of bonding with Choice resin cement.
This in vitro study examined the effect of surface defects on cutting blades on the extent of the cyclic fatigue fracture of HEROShaper Ni-Ti rotary files using fractographic analysis of the fractured surfaces. A total of 45 HEROShaper (MicroMega) Ni-Ti rotary flies with a #30/.04 taper were divided into three groups of 15 each. Group 1 contained new HEROShapers without any surface defects. Group 2 contained HEROShapers with manufacturing defects such as metal rollover and machining marks. Croup 3 contained HEROShapers that had been clinically used for the canal preparation of 4-6 molars A fatigue-testing device was designed to allow cyclic tension and compressive stress on the tip of the instrument whilst maintaining similar conditions to those experienced in a clinic. The level of fatigue fracture time was measured using a computer connected the system. Statistical analysis was performed using a Tukey's test. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used for fractographic analysis of the fractured surfaces. The fatigue fracture time between groups 1 and 2, and between groups 1 and 3 was significantly different (p<0.05) but there was no significant difference between groups 2 and 3 (p>0.05). A low magnification SEM views show brittle fracture as the main initial failure mode At higher magnification, the brittle fracture region showed clusters of fatigue striations and a large number of secondary cracks. These fractures typically led to a central region of catastrophic ductile failure. Qualitatively, the ductile fracture region was characterized by the formation of microvoids and dimpling. The fractured surfaces of the HEROShapers in groups 2 and 3 were always associated with pre-existing surface defects. Typically, the fractured surface in the brittle fracture region showed evidence of cleavage (transgranular) facets across the grains, as well as intergranular facets along the grain boundaries. These results show that surface defects on cutting blades of Ni-Ti rotary files might be the preferred sites for the origin of fatigue fracture under experimental conditions. Furthermore this work demonstrates the utility of fractography in evaluating the failure of Ni-Ti rotary flies.
