We present a simple idea to simulate dynamic fracture and fragmentation of a propulsion system exposed to an extreme condition, such as a fire. The system consists of energetic materials confined in a steel cylinder. The strain failure model of the confinement is a modified Johnson-Cook model with a statistical failure distribution. By using the size distribution data of the fragments from the thermal explosion tests, the failure strain distribution can be empirically obtained and then entered into the model. The simulated fracture and fragment sizes are compared with the experimental records.
TMCP steel manufactured by controlled rolling followed by accelerated cooling process is known to have extra-ordinary mechanical properties such as tensile strength and toughness. However, there is much uncertainty about the fatigue fracture characteristics, especially, in the welded state of this steel. In case of this steel, the softening zone by welding is generated in heat affected zone in contrast with the case of conventional normalized high strength steel. This softening zone is considered to play significant roles in low cycle fatigue fracture of the welded part of this steel. In this paper, the low cycle fatigue behaviors of TMCP steel were inspected in as-received and welded state using the smooth specimen. The fatigue life-time was seperately investigated on the basis of failure of the specimen and crack initiation which is detected by differential strain method. Moreover, the low cycle fatigue characteristics of TMCP steel were quantitatively compared with those of the conventional normalized steel of same strength level.

Recently the Carbon Fiber Sheet(CFS) is widely used for strengthening damaged RC structures. Strengthening compression members such as column can increase ductility and strength due to the confinement effect. In this experiment, the behavior of concrete cylinders confined by CFS was examined. The confinement pressure is increased linearly as axial stress is increased in low axial stress, and the confinement effect of CFS was rapidly developed after near maximum axial stress, thus axial strength and ductility was improved. As the ratio of CPS is increased, concrete cylinders failed due to local fracture of CFS. The confinement effect of circular section is more efficient than that of rectangular section. And significant improvement of axial strength, axial strain, transverse strain at failure is observed in circular section. This is because in rectangular section the local fracture of CFS near corner may be occured, thus the strain efficiency ratio must be considered for RC structures with CFS.
This paper presents the analysis of intermediate crack-induced (IC) debonding failure loads for reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened with adhesively-bonded fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) plates or sheets. The analysis consists of the energy release and simple ACI methods. In the energy release method, a fracture criterion is employed to predict the debonding loads. The interfacial fracture energy that indicates the resistance to debonding is related to the bond-slip relationships obtained from the shear test of FRP-to-concrete bonded joints. The section analysis that considers the effect of concrete's tension stiffening is employed to develop the moment-curvature relationships of the FRP-strengthened sections. In the ACI method, the onset of debonding is assumed when the FRP strain reaches the debonding strain limit. The tension stiffening effect is neglected in developing a moment-curvature relationship. For a comparison purpose, both methods are used to numerically investigate the effects of relevant parameters on the IC debonding failure loads. The results show that the debonding failure load generally increases as the concrete compressive strength, FRP reinforcement ratio, FRP elastic modulus and steel reinforcement ratio increase.
Among the failure modes which can occur in tube hydroforming such as wrinkling, bursting or buckling, the bursting by local instability under excessive tensile stresses is irrecoverable phenomenon. Thus, the accurate prediction of bursting condition plays an important role in producing the successfully hydroformed part without any defects. As the classical forming limit criteria, strain-based forming limit diagram (FLD) has widely used to predict the failure in sheet metal forming. However, it is known that the FLD is extremely dependant on strain path throughout the forming process. Furthermore, The application of FLD to hydroforming process, where strain path is no longer linear throughout forming process, may lead to misunderstanding for fracture initiation. In this work, stress-based forming limit diagram (FLSD), which is strain path-independent and more general, was applied to prediction of forming limit in tube hydroforming. Combined with the analytical FLSD determined from plastic instability theory, finite element analyses were carried out to find out the state of stresses during hydroforming operation, and then FLSD is utilized as forming limit criterion. In addition, the approach is verified by a series of bulge tests in view of bursting pressure and shows a good agreement. Consequently, it is shown that the approach proposed in this paper will provide a feasible method to satisfy the increasing practical demands for judging the forming severity in hydroforming processes.

In this study, projectiles with 2 kinds of nose shape: spherical and flat were impacted into normal concrete and fiber reinforced concrete panels. The fracture depth and form, crater diameter, tensile strain at rear face were evaluated. It was confirmed that smaller projectile nose areas resulted in deeper penetrations associated with concentrated impact forces and small front-face crater diameters in impact test. Conversely, larger projectile nose areas resulted in shallower penetrations and larger front-face fracture diameters. Similar front-face failure and strain distribution relationships based on the projectile nose shape were observed for normal and fiber-reinforced concrete although the rear-face tensile strain and scabbing were significantly reduced by the fiber reinforcement. In addition, a direct relationship was confirmed between the penetration depth based on the projectile nose shape and the tensile strain on the rear face. Thus the impact strain behavior is required to predict the scabbing behavior with penetration depth.
It is common practice to use Reduced Web Beam Sections (RWBS) in steel moment resisting frames. Perforation of beam web in these members may cause stress and strain concentration around the opening area and facilitate ductile fracture under cyclic loading. This paper presents a numerical study on the cyclic fracture of these structural components. The considered connections are configured as T-shaped assemblies with beams of elongated circular perforations. The failure of specimens under Ultra Low Cycle Fatigue (ULCF) condition is simulated using Cyclic Void Growth Model (CVGM) which is a micromechanics based fracture model. In each model, CVGM fracture index is calculated based on the stress and strain time histories and then models with different opening configurations are compared based on the calculated fracture index. In addition to the global models, sub-models with refined mesh are used to evaluate fracture index around the beam to column weldment. Modeling techniques are validated using data from previous experiments. Results show that as the perforation size increases, opening corners experience greater fracture index. This is while as the opening size increases the maximum observed fracture index at the connection welds decreases. However, the initiation of fracture at connection welds occurs at lower drift angles compared to opening corners. Finally, a probabilistic framework is applied to CVGM in order to account for the uncertainties existing in the prediction of ductile fracture and results are discussed.

One of the main concerns in the structural integrity of offshore pipelines is mechanical damage from external loads. Pipelines are exposed to fatigue failure in welded joints due to geometric discontinuity. In addition, fatigue loads such as currents, waves, and platform motions may cause significant plastic deformation and fracture or leakage within a relatively low-cycle regime. The 2007 ASME Div. 2 Code adopts the master S―N curve for the fatigue evaluation of welded joints based on the mesh-insensitive structural stress. An extension to the master S―N curve was introduced to evaluate the low-cycle fatigue strength. This structural strain method uses the tensile properties of the material. However, the monotonic tensile properties have limitations in describing the material behavior above the elastic range because most engineering materials exhibit hardening or softening behavior under cyclic loads. The goal of this study is to extend the cyclic stress-strain behavior to the structural strain method. To this end, structural strain-based procedure was established while considering the cyclic stress-strain behavior and compared to the structural strain method with monotonic tensile properties. Finally, the improved prediction method was validated using fatigue test data from full-scale girth-welded pipes.

Mechanical properties and microstructure were investigated on vacuum induction melted $Fe_3A1$base alloys of $DO_3$ structure. Specal emphasis were put on the effect of alloy chemistry, grain size and process(rolling, directional solidification) on mechanical properties of Fe-22.5-39at.%Al at elevated temperature between room temperature and $800^{\circ}C$. grain size of as-cast alloys is refined by rolling from 1mm to $80\mum$. Tensile strength of Fe-24.lat.%AI was about 404MPa at the critical ordering temperature, and the fracture strain of the alloy was 1-2% at room temperature. An inverse temperature dependence of the strength is noticed as-cast $Fe_3A1$. The presence of Cr and Zr do not affect the room temperature ductility and high temperature strength. Fracture strain of directionally solidified(DS) $Fe_3A1$ is about 1%at room temperature, but is about 60%at. $T_C$(550^{\circ}C)$. Tensile strength of DS alloy is lower than that of as-cast alloy at $530^{\circ}C$ and $430^{\circ}C$. Failure mode at room temperature varies from transgranular fracture to intergranular fracture with the addition of Al. the failure mode also varies from mixed(transgranular+ intergranular) mode between room temperature and $500^{\circ}C$ to intergranular mode above $550^{\circ}C$

The Tailor Welded Blanks(TWB) are using various materials (different thickness, strength and different materials) can be welded together prior to the forming process. Therefore, TWB applications have become little by little important in automobile industries, because it has more light weight and process reduction. A burnish area is very important for TWB using laser welding. In this paper, evaluated failure criterion, effect of clearance and distance of between pad and punch by computer simulation. We used element separation method for fracture. And applied a plastic strain to failure criterion. According to the analysis results, we obtain failure criterion, when plastic strain is 2.0. The burnish area and clearance were inverse proportional.
