Three point bending tests of single edge notched beam (SENB) specimens were carried out to evaluate the fracture behavior of the fine-grain isotropic nuclear grade graphite, IG-11. To measure the crack initiation point and the subsequent crack growth, the direct current potential drop (DCPD) method and a traveling microscope were used. The effects of test variables like initial crack length, specimen thickness, notch type and loading rate on the measured fracture toughness, $K_Q$, were investigated. Based on the test results, the ranges of the test variables to measure the reliable fracture toughness value were proposed. During the crack growth, the rising R-curve behavior was observed in IG-11 graphite when the superficial crack length measured on the specimen surface was used. The increase of crack growth resistance was discussed in terms of crack bridging, crack meandering, crack branching, microcracking and crack deflection, which increase the surface energy and friction force.

Some materials exhibit a rising K-R curve, while the K-R curve for other materials is flat. The shape of the K-R curve depends on material behavior and, to a lesser extent, on the configuration of the cracked structure. The K-R curve for an ideally brittle material is flat because the surface energy is an invariant material property. However, the K-R curve can take on a variety of shapes when nonlinear material behavior accompanies fracture. Five different hot-rolled thin plates are tested to investigate K-R curve behavior. A special experimental apparatus is used to prevent specimens from buckling.

The present paper considers the constraint effect on J-R curves under the two-parameter $J-A_2$ controlled crack growth within a certain amount of crack extension. Since the parameter $A_2$ in $J-A_2$ three-term solution is independent of applied loading under fully plasticity or large-scale defor-mation $A_2$ is a proper constraint parameter uring crack extension. Both J and $A_2$ are used to char-acterize the resistance curves of ductile crack growth using J as the loading level and $A_2$ are used to char-acterize the resistance curves of ductile crack growth using J as the loading level and A2 as a con-straint parameter. Approach of the constraint-corrected J-R curve is proposed and a procedure of transferring the J-R curves determined from standard ASTM procedure to non-standard speci-mens or real cracked structures is outlined. The test data(e.g. initiation toughness JIC and tearing modulus $T_R$) of Joyce and Link(Engineer-ing Fracture Mechanics 1997, 57(4) : 431-446) for single-edge notched bend[SENB] specimen with from shallow to deep cracks is employed to demonstrate the efficiency of the present approach. The variation of $J_{IC}$ and $T_R$ with the constraint parameter $A_2$ is obtained and a con-straint-corrected J-R curves is constructed for the test material of HY80 steel. Comparisons show that the predicted J-R curves can very well match with the experimental data for both deep and shallow cracked specimens over a reasonably large amount of crack extension. Finally the present constraint-corrected J-R curve is used to predict the crack growth resistance curves for different fracture specimens. over a reasonably large amount of crack extension. Finally the present constraint-corrected J-R curve is used to predict the crack growth resistance curves for different fracture specimens. The constraint effects of specimen types and specimen sizes on the J-R curves can be easily obtained from the constrain-corrected J-R curves.
Continuous fiber ceramic composites (CFCCs) have advantages over monolithic ceramics : Silicon Nitride composites are not well used for application because of their low fracture toughness and fracture strength, but CFCCs exhibit increased toughness for damage tolerance, and relatively high stiffness in spite of low specific weight. Thus it is important to characterize the fracture resistance and properties of new CFCCs materials. Tensile and flexural tests were carried out for mechanical properties and the fracture resistance behavior of a SCS6 fiber reinforced Si$_3$N$_4$ matrix CFCC was evaluated. The results indicated that CFCC composite exhibit a rising R curve behavior in flexural test. The fracture toughness was about 4.8 MPa$.$m$\^$1/2 , which resulted in a higher value of the fracture toughness because of fiber bridging. Mechanical properties as like the elastic modulus, proportional limit and the ultimate strength in a flexural test are greater than those in a tensile test. Also a numerical modeling of failure process was accomplished for a flexural test. This numerical results provided a good simulation of the cumulative fracture process of the fiber and matrix in CFCCs.
Since standardized fracture test specimens cannot be easily extracted from in-service components, several alternative fracture toughness test methods have been proposed to characterize the deformation and fracture resistance of materials. One of the more promising alternatives is the local approach employing the SP(Small Punch) testing technique. However, this process has several limitations such as a lack of anisotropic yield potential and tediousness in the damage parameter calibration process. The present paper investigates estimation of ductile fracture resistance(J-R) curve by FE(Finite Element) analyses using an anisotropic damage model and enhanced calibration procedure. In this context, specific tensile tests to quantify plastic strain ratios were carried out and SP test data were obtained from the previous research. Also, damage parameters constituting the Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman model in conjunction with Hill's 48 yield criterion were calibrated for a typical nuclear reactor material through a genetic algorithm. Finally, the J-R curve of a standard compact tension specimen was predicted by further detailed FE analyses employing the calibrated damage parameters. It showed a lower fracture resistance of the specimen material than that based on the isotropic yield criterion. Therefore, a more realistic J-R curve of a reactor material can be obtained effectively from the proposed methodology by taking into account a reduced load-carrying capacity due to anisotropy.

The objective of this study is to investigate fracture toughness and fatigue crack propagation behavior in the Reduced Activation Ferritic Steel (RAFs) JLF-I. The fracture toughness tests were performed with various size(plane size and thickness) and various side groove of specimens. The fatigue crack propagation behavior of the JLF-I steel was investigated by the constant-amplitude loading test for the stress ratios R=O.I, 0.3 and 0.5 respectively. The effects of stress ratios and specimen size on the fatigue crack growth behaviors for JLF-I steel were discussed within the Paris law. The test results showed the standard CT specimen with the side groove of 40 % represented a valid fracture toughness. The fracture resistance curve increased with increasing plane size and decreased with increasing thickness. However, the fracture resistance curve of half size specimen was similar to that of the standard specimen. The fatigue crack propagation rate of a half size specimen was similar to that of a full size specimen at the stress ratios of 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5 respectively. The fatigue crack propagation behavior of this material were evaluated by using a half size specimen.

Materials in nuclear power plants can be embrittled by neutron irradiation. According to existing studies, the effect of the material property by irradiation embrittlement can be approximately simulated by cold working (pre-strain). In this study, finite element damage analysis method using the stress-modified fracture strain model is proposed to predict J-Resistance curves of irradiated SUS316 stainless steel. Experimental data of pre-strained SUS316 stainless steel material are obtained from literature and the damage model is determined by simulating the tensile and fracture toughness tests. In order to consider damage caused by the pre-strain, a pre-strain constant is newly introduced. Experimental J-Resistance curves for various degrees of pre-strain are well predicted.

The estimation of fracture toughness in inhomogeneous material is still insufficient because it is difficult to get information of fracture initiation at the crack tip. Therefore, martensite-ferrite dual phase steel was prepared for a model material and micro-fracture behavior was investigated in the region of pre-fatigue crack in order to understand the characteristic of fracture resistance in inhomogeneous materials. In the case of severely inhomogeneous state, micro-fracture appearance is not distributed homogenously so that the estimation of fracture toughness is hardly possible. On the other hand when the grain size is refined or the strength of martensite is lowered, micro-fracture appearance is distributed homogenously and fracture toughness remarkably increases.

In this study, J-integral values obtained by various methods, i.e, R-Curve, Unloading Compliance, Strectched Zone Width [SZW], and Acoustic Emission [AE] methods are investigated. Elasto-plastic fracture toughness [$J_IC$] estimations by R-curve method are overestimated than those by SZW method, and those by unloading compliance method is around middle value of them. And the difference between them is little. The $J_IC$ value by AE method was almost agreed with that by SZW, and then proved to be useful. Crack propagation mechanism on fractography is a stable ductile fracture. For the identification of ductile fracture, both fractography analysis and AE method were applied to estimate the characteristics more precisely.
SG-365 steel is an important material End used for manufacturing a pressure vessel and gas piping. In this investigation, the elastic plastic fracture toughness of this material is evaluated by the unloading compliance method according to the ASTM E8l3-97 and E1152-97 method on the smooth and side groove In specimens. The effect of smooth and side groove is studied on the elastic plastic fracture toughness. The side grooved specimen is very useful in estimation of the $J_{IC}$. Because it is much easier than the smooth specimen to the onset of the ductile tearing by the R curve method. Besides. it improves the accuracy of toughness values, decreases the scattering of them and crack tunneling effect and shear lip by the side groove.
