The application of bonded dissimilar materials to industries as automobiles, aircraft, rolling stocks, electronic devices and engineering structures is increasing gradually because these materials, compared to the homogeneous materials, have many advantages for material properties. In spite of such wide applications of bonded dissimilar materials, the evaluation method of quantitative strength considering the stress singularities for its bonded interface has not been established clearly. In this paper, the stress singularity for Bctors and the stress intensity factors were analyzed by boundary element method(BEM) for the scarf joints of Al/Epoxy with and without a crack, respectively. From static fracture experiments of the bonded scarf joints, a fracture criterion and a evaluation method of interface strength in bonded dissimilar materials were proposed and discussed.

The characteristics on the extension of the CED(Crack Energy Density) concept to the interface kinked crack problems in a dissimilar are examined. Each mode contributions of CED are found by symmetric and antisymmetric conponents and domain independent integrals. Finite element calculation is carried out to simulate the interface kinked crack growth on a bimaterial. The focus is the establishment of fracture criterion with CED and finding the orientation of crack extension. From the results, a prediction about the extension behavior of an interface kinked crack can be done. And we show that CED can be a parameter to indicate fracture criterion at an interface kinked crack.

We apply the Finite Fracture Mechanics criterion to address the problem of a V-notched structure subjected to mode II loading, i.e., we provide a way to determine the direction and the load at which a crack propagates from the notch tip and express the critical conditions in terms of the generalized stress intensity factor. Weight functions for V-notch emanated cracks available in the literature allow us to implement the fracture criterion proposed in an almost completely analytical manner: the determination of the critical load and the direction of crack growth is reduced to a stationary point problem. A comparison with experimental data presented in the Literature concludes the paper.
Silicon Nitride samples with different microstructure were prepared by hot pressing and subsequent heat treatment under N2 gas pressure. The fracture toughness (KIC)of Si3N4 increased with the increase of grain size, but the bending strength of plain specimen($\sigma$F) decreased. The relation between fracture stress($\sigma$c) and equivalent crack length(ae) agreed well with the calculated values by process zone size failure criterion. A probabilistic failure assessment curve is proposed based on both statistical character of $\sigma$F and KIC.

Conventional single-side straight cutting of sheet metal is analyzed by the rigid-thermoviscoplastic finite element method. The FE-simulation is performed from initial stage to final stage of shearing process. The ductile fracture criterion and element kill method are used in the present work to estimate if and where a fracture occurs and to investigate the features of sheared surface in shearing process. The FE-simulation results are obtained for different clearances and these are compared with published experimental results. It is found that the results of the present work are in close agreement with published experimental results.

Finite element simulation is an alternative method to practically find the forming limit diagram(FLD). In this paper, the novel fracture criterion is utilized to predict the FLD in conjunction with finite element analysis for sheet forming. The principal scheme of the fracture criterion in this paper is that growth of the micro voids leads up to fracture in the viewpoint of micro-mechanics. The numerical FLD is verified by results of the out-of plane stretching test using hemispherical punch. The verification is also conducted about two types of material. These results are in good accord with the experimental results. Especially, the proposed scheme is appropriate to predict FLDs for a restricted material with low ductility after the instability point or ultimate tensile strength.

The major objective of the present paper is to estabilish finite element simulation technique in order to further analyze the shearing process. For this the ductile fracture criterion and element kill method are used in the present work. It is postulated that a fracture initiation is based on the magnitude of local effective strain. The features of sheared surface are easily observed by the element kill method. The simulation results are compard with existing experimental results. It is found that the results of the present work are close agreement with the existing results.
Recently, US NRC revised fracture toughness requirements as 10CFR50.61a to reduce the conservatism of 10CFR50.61. However, unlike previous studies relating to the initial regulation, structural integrity evaluations based on the alternative regulation are not sufficient. In the present study, PTS and P-T limit curve evaluations were carried out by using both regulations and resulting data were compared. With regard to the PTS evaluation, the results obtained from the alternative requirements were satisfied with the criterion whereas those obtained from the initial requirements did not meet the criterion. Also, with regard to the P-T limit curve evaluation, operating margin by 10CFR50.61a was greater than that by 10CFR50.61.
The numerical simulations on the influence of mesoscopic structures on the macroscopic strength and fracture characteristics are carried out based on that the concrete is assumed to be a three-phase composite composed of matrix (mortar), aggregate and bond between them by using a numerical code named MFPA. The finite element program is employed as the basic stress analysis tool when the elastic damage mechanics is used to describe the constitutive law of meso-level element and the maximum tensile strain criterion and Mohr-Coulomb criterion are utilized as damage threshold. It can be found from the numerical results that the bond between matrix and aggregate has a significant effect on the macroscopic mechanical performance of concrete.

Finite element analyses for bursting failure prediction in bulge forming under combined internal pressure and independent axial feeding are carried out. By means of the FEM combined with Oyane's ductile fracture criterion based on Hills quadratic plastic potential, the forming limit and bursting pressure level are investigated for a seamed tube that comprises of weldment, heat affected zone(HAZ) and base material parts. Especially, in order to determine the material property of HAZ tensile tests for the base material and the weld metal are executed based on iso-strain approach. Finally, through a series of bulge forming simulations with consideration of the weldment and HAZ it is concluded that the proposed method would be able to predict the bursting pressure and fracture initiation site more realistically, so the approach can be extended to a wide range of practical bulge forming processes.
