This paper proposes slip line fields for bending of unequally notched specimens in plane strain that have a sharp crack in one side and a sharp V-notch in the other side. Depending on the back angle, two slip line fields are proposed, from which the limit moment and crack tip stress fields are obtained as a function of the back angle. Excellent agreement between slip line field solutions with those from detailed finite element limit analysis based on non-hardening plasticity provides confidence in the proposed slip line fields. One interesting point is that, for the unequally notched specimen, the difference between the crack tip triaxial stress for tension and that for bending increases significantly with increasing the back angle. This suggests that such a specimen could be potentially useful to investigate the crack tip constraint effect on fracture toughness of materials. In this respect, the possibility of designing a new toughness testing specimen with varying crack tip constraint is discussed.

In-plane tension fatigue tests(R=0.1) were carried out to investigate the initiation and growth behaviors of very small surface fatigue cracks on smooth unnotched surfaces of type 304 stainless steel at room temperature. The present paper deals with the unification of two approaches to the analysis of fatigue: the one approach is based on fracture mechanics concept and the other on low-cycle fatigue concept. The results are;(1)Maximum crack length, 2 $a_{max}$, initiated at a very small surface scratch not exceeding 20 .mu.m which can exist on the surface after buffing. And the density of small surface crack is remarkably low compared to that of mild steel. (2) The growth rate, d(2a)/dN, of very small fatigue cracks can be represented by one straight line as a function of either stress intensity factor range, .DELTA. $K_{I}$ or cyclic total strain intensity factor range, .DELTA. $K_{\epsilon}$$_{I}$/, for various values of the nominal stress range.e.e.e.e.

Recently small punch creep testing (or miniature disc bend creep test) has received much attention through European collaborative research projects. This method was considered as a substitute for the conventional creep rupture testing by which the residual creep life is measured from the specimen taken out from serviced components of high temperature plants. It would be beneficial if the material creep properties such as power law creep constants as well as the creep rupture life can be measured from the small punch creep test. In this paper a method of assessing creep constants from the small punch creep testing is proposed. Finite element analyses were performed to investigate evolution of stress and strain rate at the weakest locations of the small punch creep specimen. Elastic-plastic-secondary creep analyses were carried out. The estimation equations for creep constants by the small punch creep testing are proposed based on the finite analysis results. Small punch creep tests were also performed with 9Cr steel and the accuracy of the proposed equation was verified by the experimental results.
Formation of Shear Band under the adiabatic condition is widely observed In the engineering materials during rapidly forming process lot a thermally rate-dependent material. The shear band stems from evolution of a narrow region in which an intensive plastic flow occurs. The shear band often plays a role of a precursor of the ductile fracture during a forming process. The objective of this study is to investigate the localization behavior using numerical method. In this work, the implicit finite difference scheme is employed due to the ease of convergence and the numerical stability It is noted that physical and mechanical properties of materials determine how the shear band is formed and then localized. Material properties can be characterized with inertia number dissipation number and diffusion number. It is observed that the dimensionless numbers effect on localization. Using a parametric study, comparison was made between CRS-1018 steel with WHA (tungsten heavy alloy). The deformation behavior of material in this study include an isotropic hardening as well as thermal softening. Moreover, this study suggests that a kinematic hardening constitutive relation be required to predict a more accurate strain level at a shear band.

In this paper, the fatigue behaviour of typical axisymmetric forward extrusion die is investigated and extrusion process is analyzed by the rigid-plastic finite element method and elasto-plastic finite element method. To approach the crack problem involving crack initiation and propagation in extrusion die, LEFM(Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics) is introduced and singular element which models stress.strain singularity in the crack tip vincity has been used to obtain an accurate stress intensityu factor values and other results. Form the displacement around the crack tip the stress intensity factor and the effective stress intensity factor at the beginning of the die inlet radius has been calculated. Applying proper fatigue crack propagation criterion such as Paris/Erdogan fatigue law to this data the angle and direction of fatigue crack growth has been simulated and these are compared with some experimental results. Using the computed crack growth rate, fatigue life of the extrusion die has been evaluated.
The influence of weld defect, residual stress and microstructure on the Low Cycle Fatigue(L. C. F.) behaviour of AISI 304L austenitic stainless steel weldment has been studied. The specimens were welded by shielded metal are welding process, post weld heat treated(PWHT) at 900.deg.C for 1.5hrs, and tested under total strain controlled condition at room temperature. The results of the experiment showed that weld defect affected the L.C.F. behaviour of weldment deleteriously compared to the residual stress or microstructure, and it reduced the L.C.F. life about 70-80%. The PWHT exhibited beneficial effect on the L.C.F. behaviour and increased the L.C.F. life about 120%. This enhancement by PWHT was attributed to the removal of residual stress and recovery of weld metal ductility. The cyclic stress flow of as welded specimens showed intermediate cyclic softening, whereas those of heat treated specimens showed continuous cyclic hardening, and this difference was explained in terms of the residual stress removal and dislocation behaviour. Scanning electron microscopy studies of fatigue fracture surface showed that weld defects of large size and near weld surface were detrimental to the L.C.F. behaviour of weldment.
A study on the corrosion behavior in case of As-welded and PWHT temperature 55$0^{\circ}C$ of welding part of RE36 steel for marine structure was investigated with parameters such as micro-Vickers hardness, corrosion potential measurement of weld metal(WM), base metal(BM) and heat affected zone(HAZ), both Al anode generating current and Al anode weight loss quantity under sacrificial anode cathodic protection conditions. And also we carried out slow strain rate test(SSRT) in order to research both limiting cathodic polarization potential for hydrogen embrittlement and optimum cathodic protection potential as well as mechanical properties by post-weld heat treatment(PWHT) effect. Hardness of HAZ was the highest among three parts(WM, BM and HAZ) and the highest galvanic corrosion susceptibility was HAZ. And the optimum cathodic polarization potential showing the best mechanical properties by SSRT method was from -770mV to -875mV(SCE). In analysis of SEM fractography, applied cathodic potential from -770mV to -875mV(SCE) it appeared dimple pattern with ductile fracture while it showed transgranular pattern (Q. C : quasicleavage) under -900mV(SCE). However it is suggested that limiting cathodic polarization potential indicating hydrogen embrittlement was under -900mV(SCE).
In the present study, two-dimensional plane deformation thermo elasto-plastic analysis has been carried out, in order to investigate the thermal and mechanical behaviour (residual stress, plastic strain, magnitude of stress and their distribution and production mechanism) on multi-pass FCA butt weldment of high strength EH36-TMCP ultra thick plate. Moreover, this study can be considered as a basis for analysing the fracture toughness, KIC, and its effect on welding residual stress redistribution with notch on multi-pass FCA butt weldment, in future. The results of welding residual stress obtained from thermo elasto-plastic analysis has been compared and verified with the results measured by XRD.

Titanium alloy has widely been used as material for automotive parts because it has high specific strength. It is also light and harmless to human body. But, we have little design data about the creep behaviors of the alloy. Therefore, in this study, creep tests under four constant stress conditions have been conducted with low different temperature conditions. A series of creep tests had been performed to get the basic design data and life prediction of titanium products and we have gotten the fallowing results. First, the stress exponents decrease as the test temperatures increased. Secondly, the creep activation energy gradually decrease as the stresses became bigger. Thirdly, the constant of Larson-Miller parameter on this alloy was estimated as about 7.5. And for the last, the fractographs at the creep rupture showed the ductile fracture due to the intergranullar rupture.

The purpose of this study is to propose the nonlinear analysis method which combines the nonlinear incremental method with the layered method to solve the problems due to the geometric and the material nonlinearities. As numerical analysis models, the reinforced concrete simple beam and the steel arch frame are used to verify the algorithm of the proposed nonlinear method. The results are gotten from the computation procedures. According to the results of this study, the fracture pattern of the beam according to the ratio of tensile steel and the strength of the concrete and the steel can be estimated by the proposed method. Therefore, the load-deflection curve of structure can be, exactly, depicted by the proposed method. Also, the rupture load, the site and the depth of crack of the beam can analytically be checked by the proposed method. In this respect, the proposed method contributes for the solving the stability problem of the actual structure.
