  • This paper briefly describes the new engineering method, called the enhanced reference stress method, to estimate J (or $C^*$) for non-linear fracture mechanics analysis of defective components, recently proposed by authors. The proposed method offers significant advantages over existing methods in terms of its accuracy, simplicity and robustness. Examples of application of the proposed method to typical piping integrity problems such as through-wall cracked pipes under combined loading, and surface cracked pipes under internal pressure and bending are given. Excellent agreements between the FE J and $C^*$ results and those of the proposed method provide sufficient confidence in the use of the proposed method. One notable point is that the proposed method can be used to estimate J (or $C^*$) along the crack front of surface cracks. Moreover simplicity of the proposed method makes it easy to extend to more complex problems. Thus the proposed method is attractive to assess the significance of defects under practical situations.

  • This paper describes a probabilistic fracture mechanics(PFM) analysis based on Monte Carlo(MC) simulation. In the analysis of CANDU pressure tube, the depth and aspect ratio of an initial semi-elliptical surface crack, a fracture toughness value and delayed hydride cracking(DHC) velocity are assumed to be probabilistic variables. As an example, some failure probabilities of piping and CANDU pressure tube are calculated using MC method with the stratified sampling MC technique, taking analysis conditions of normal operations. In the stratified MC simulation, a sampling space of probabilistic variables is divided into a number of small cells. For the verification of analysis results, a comparison study of the PFM analysis using other commercial code is carried out and a good agreement was observed between those results.

  • The present paper deals with a theoretical study of delamination fracture in the Crack Lap Shear (CLS) functionally graded beam configuration. The basic purpose is to analyze the fracture with taking into account the material non-linearity. The mechanical behavior of CLS was described by using a non-linear stress-strain relation. It was assumed that the material is functionally graded along the beam height. The fracture was analyzed by applying the J-integral approach. The curvature and neutral axis coordinate of CLS beam were derived in order to solve analytically the J-integral. The non-linear solution of J-integral obtained was verified by analyzing the strain energy release rate with considering material non-linearity. The effects of material gradient, crack location along the beam height and material non-linearity on fracture behavior were evaluated. The J-integral non-linear solution derived is very suitable for parametric studies of longitudinal fracture in the CLS beam. The results obtained can be used to optimize the functionally graded beam structure with respect to the fracture performance. The analytical approach developed in the present paper contributes for the understanding of delamination fracture in functionally graded beams exhibiting material non-linearity.

  • A new finite element technology based on p-version of F.E.M. is discussed with reference to its potential for application to stress intensity factor computations. In linear elastic fracture mechanics, especially cracked cylindrical shells. It is shown that the p-version nutlet is far better suited for computing the stress intensity factors than the conventional h-version models with the help of three test problems. The main advantage of this technology is that the accuracy of approximation can be established without mesh refinement or the use of special procedures.

  • Fracture analysis of human bone is necessary to predict the failure of musculoskeletal structures and to heal them by several possible mechanisms under different loading conditions. But human bone is a complex material, with a multiphase, heterogeneous and anisotropic microstructure. Due to the difficulty of obtaining experimental and clinical results, the importance of numerical analysis and computational simulations in biomechanics are increasing gradually. In this study, stress analysis for human femur model is performed by using the 2-dimensional finite element method(FEM) and its stress distribution is determined. From these results, the fracture mechanic parameters are calculated and the fracture criteria on human femur are investigated and discussed.

  • This study verified the relationship between fracture mechanics parameters(${\Delta}K,\;K_{max}$) and X-ray parameters ($(\sigma}_r,;B$) for G365 steel at elevated temperature up to $300{\circ}C$. The fatigue crack propagation test were carried out and X-ray diffraction technique according to crack length direction was applied to fatigue fractured surface. The residual stress on the fracture surface was found to increase in low ${\Delta}K$ region, reach to a maximum value at a certain value of $K_{max}$ or ${\Delta}K$ and then decrease. Residual stress was independent on stress ratio by arrangement of ${\Delta}K$ and half value breadth was independent by the arrangement of $K_{max}$. The equation of ${\sigma}_r-{\Delta}K$ was established by the experimental data. Therefore, fracture mechanics parameters could be estimated by the measurement of X-ray parameters.

  • In this article, the dynamic fracture instability characteristics, including dynamic crack propagation and crack branching, in PMMA brittle solids under dynamic loading are investigated using the discrete element method (DEM) simulations. The microscopic parameters in DEM are first calibrated using the comparison with the previous experimental results not only in the field of qualitative analysis, but also in the field of quantitative analysis. The calibrating process illustrates that the selected microscopic parameters in DEM are suitable to effectively and accurately simulate dynamic fracture process in PMMA brittle solids subjected to dynamic loads. The typical dynamic fracture behaviors of solids under dynamic loading are then reproduced by DEM. Compared with the previous experimental and numerical results, the present numerical results are in good agreement with the existing ones not only in the field of qualitative analysis, but also in the field of quantitative analysis. Furthermore, effects of dynamic loading magnitude, offset distance of the initial crack and initial crack length on dynamic fracture behaviors are numerically discussed.

  • Specimens of WC-Co were indented to measure the resulting crack size and unindented samples were fractured in 3-point flexure to obtain the strength and to measure characteristic features on the fracture surface. Fracture toughness was determined using fractography and compared to those determined using identation techniques. We show that principles of fracture mechanics can be applied WC-Co composites and can be used to analyze the fracture process. The fracture surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy. Characteristic feature observed in glasses, single crystals and polycrystalline materials known as mirror, mist, hackle, and crack branching were identified for these composites. We discuss the importance of fracture surface analysis in determining the failure-initiating sources and the failure behaviorof WC-Co composites.
