  • This paper reveals the effect of the effective case depth(ECD) on the fatigue behavior of a high-frequency induction hardened SM45C in rotated bending fatigue test. In addition, the effects of fracture modes(surface origin type, inner origin type) on it are discussed. The fatigue limit of the induction hardened steel is remarkably increased compared with that of base metal. In addition, the fatigue limit is linearly increased as the effective casedepth grows deep in the region of this experiment (ECD/R;0.23-0.49). The S-N curve and fracture mode in the induction case hardened steel are classified into two kinds, as a result : N$_{f}$<10$^{5}$ ;surface origin type fracture(at high stress), N$_{f}$>10$^{5}$ ; in ner origin type fracture(at low stress). In case of inner origin type fracture; as the effective case depth(ECD) gets deep, the fatigue limit is increased by the reason that the fracture origin moves toward center; in reverse, is decreased by reason that the compressive residual stress gets low. As a result, the increasing effect of the former is much bigger than the decreasing effect of the latter, and the fatigue limit is increased as the ECD gets deep.eep.

  • The purpose of this work is to investigate the working limit of carbon steel and forging condition of cold forging. The fracture criteria which was proposed by Oyane and Osakada was used. Compression test, hardness study and tension test by Oyane's creteria, microstructure study by Osakada's were carried out. The results were compared with each other. It was found that working limit on compressive hydrostatic stress is increased in comparison with that of tensile stress field and can be forecasted the fracture limit of closed cold forging.

  • During heatup and cooldown of pressurized water reactor, thermal stress was generated in the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) because of the temperature gradient. To prevent potential failure of RPV, pressure was required to be maintained below the P-T limit curves. In this paper, several methods for constructing the P-T limit curves including the ASME Sec. XI, App. G method were explained and the results were compared. Then, the effects of the various parameters such as flaw size, flaw orientation, cooldown rate, existence of chad, and reference fracture toughness, were evaluated. It was found that the current ASME Sec. XI App. G method resulted in the most conservative P-T limit curve. As the more accurate fracture mechanics analysis results were used, some of the conservatism can be removed. Among the parameters analysed, reference flaw orientation and reference fracture toughness curve had the greatest effect on the resulting P-T limit curves.

  • By using the finite element method, the Oyane's ductile fracture integral I was calculated from the histories of stress and strain according to every element and then the forming limit of hydroforming process could be evaluated. The fracture initiation site and the forming limit fer two typical hydroforming processes, tee extrusion and bumper rail under different forming conditions are predicted in this study. For tee extrusion hydroforming process, the pressure level has significant influence on the forming limit. When the expansion area is backed by a supporter and bulged, the process would be more stable and the possibility of bursting failure is reduced. For bumper rail, the ductile fracture integral I is not only affected by the process parameters, but also by the shape of preforming blank. Due to no axial feeding on the end side of the blank, the possibility of cracking in hydroforming of the bumper rail is influenced by the friction condition more strongly than that of the tee extrusion. All the simulation results show reasonable plastic deformation, and the applications of the method could be extended to a wide range of hydroforming processes.

  • Most domestic and international standards on the forming limit diagram (FLD) including ISO 12004-2, use a 'position-dependent method,' which determines the forming limit from a strain distribution measured on the specimen after necking or fracture. However, the position-dependent method has inherent problems such as the incidence of asymmetry of a strain distribution, the estimation of missing data near fracture, the termination time of test, and the deformation due to the new stress equilibrium after a fracture, which is blamed for causing sometimes a significant lab-to-lab variation. The 'time-dependent method,' which is anticipated to be a new international standard for evaluating the forming limit, is expected to greatly improve these intrinsic disadvantages of the position-dependent method. It is because the time-dependent method makes it possible to identify and accurately determine the forming limit, just before the necking point from the strain data as continuously measured in a short time interval. In this study, we propose a new time-dependent method based on a Gaussian fitting of strain acceleration with the introduction of 'normalized correlation coefficient.' It has been shown in this study that this method can determine the forming limit very stably and gives a higher value, which is in comparison with the results of the previously studied position-dependent and time-dependent methods.

  • The limit drawing ratio (LDR) is a major process parameter in the process design of deep drawing. If the actual drawing ratio is greater than the LDR for a particular stage, then an intermediate stage has to be added to the process sequence to avoid failure during the ratio. In this study, the optimal process design considering forming limit is performed for the first-drawing and redrawing by using finite element method combined with ductile fracture criterion. The LDR and the site of fracture initiation are predicted by means of the fracture criterion. From the results of finite element analysis, the optimal value of drawing ratio is obtained, which contributes to the more uniform distribution of thickness and the smaller values of the ductile fracture in final cup.

  • A hole expansion process is an important process in producing a hub-hole in a wheel disc of a vehicle. In this process, the main parameter is the formability of a material that is expressed as the hole expansion ratio. In the process, a crack is occurred in the upper edge of a hole as the hole is expanded. Since prediction of the forming limit by hole expansion experiment needs tremendous time and effort, an appropriate fracture criterion has to be developed for finite element analysis to define forming limit of the material. In this paper, the hole expansion process of a hub-hole is studied by finite element analysis with ABAQUS/standard considering several ductile fracture criteria. The fracture mode and hole expansion ratio are compared with respect to the various fracture criteria. These criteria do not predict its fracture mode or hole expansion ratio adequately and show deviation from experimental results of hole expansion. A modified ductile fracture criterion is newly proposed to consider the deformation characteristics of a material accurately in a hole expansion process. A fracture propagation analysis at the hub-hole edge is also performed for high accuracy of prediction using the new fracture criterion proposed.

  • This paper is concerned with modeling of a ductile fracture criterion for sheet metal considering anisotropy to predict the sudden fracture of advanced high strength steel (AHSS) sheets during complicated forming processes. The Lou−Huh ductile fracture criterion is modified using the Hill’s 48 anisotropic plastic potential instead of the von Mises isotropic plastic potential to take account of the influence of anisotropy on the equivalent plastic strain at the onset of fracture. To determine the coefficients of the model proposed, a two dimensional digital image correlation (2D-DIC) method is utilized to measure the strain histories on the surface of three different types of specimens during deformation. For the derivation of an anisotropic ductile fracture model, principal stresses (𝜎1,𝜎2, 𝜎3) are expressed in terms of the stress triaxiality, the Lode parameter, and the equivalent stress (𝜂𝐻, 𝐿,) based on the Hill’s 48 anisotropic plastic potential. The proposed anisotropic ductile fracture criterion was quantitatively evaluated according to various directions of the maximum principal stress. Fracture forming limit diagrams were also constructed to evaluate the forming limit in sheet metal forming of AHSS sheets over a wide range of loading conditions.

  • The new energy-based criterion, named Reinforcement Strain Energy Density (ReiSED), is proposed to investigate the fracture behavior of the cracked orthotropic materials in which the crack is embedded in the matrix along the fibers. ReiSED is an extension of the well-known minimum strain energy density criterion. The concept of the reinforced isotropic solid as an advantageous model is the basis of the proposed mixed-mode I/II criterion. This model introduces fibers as reinforcements of the isotropic matrix in orthotropic materials. The effects of fibers are qualified by defining reinforcement coefficients at tension and shear modes. These coefficients, called Reduced Stress (ReSt), provide the possibility of encompassing the fiber fraction in a fracture criterion for the first time. Comparing ReiSED fracture limit curve with experimental data proves the high efficiency of this criterion to predict the fracture behavior of orthotropic materials.

  • In The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, the general yield brittle fractures were observed in beam-column connections of steel building frames. Among many influencing factors which affect the general yield brittle fracture, it can be considered that fracture toughness has substantial effects. Some studies are making clear the required toughness for the base metal and the weld metal, but general values are not proposed. Moreover, it seems that it is also important to pay attention to the toughness decrease in the weld heat affected zone (weld HAZ), because the toughness decrease occurs in the HAZs of mild steel. In this paper, the relationship between toughness of simulated HAZs of "the rolled steels for building structures (SN)" and the weld heat-input limit of the SN steel are investigated, in an attempt to provide the required toughness for HAZs. The relationships between the increase of the hardness value and toughness, and changes of microstructure after weld heat-input are also discussed. The main results are summarized as follows. 1) The SN400B can keep its toughness at higher heat-inputs compare to the SN490Bs. 2) The steel grade, which becomes harder than other steel grades at the same heat-input, has smaller absorbed energy and smaller limit of heat-input. 3) The weld heat-input limit of the SN400B and the SN490B are proposed separately for some required toughness values.
