Osteoporosis is defined as a decrease in bone mass that leads to an increased risk of fracture. The therapeutic effect of $1{\alpha}$,25 dihydroxycholecalciferol, the hormonal form of vitamin $D_3$ that mediates calcium translation in intestine and bone, on the healing process of fracture has still been controversial. These studies were designed to understand the healing process of normal fibular fracture, the osteoporotic changes after ovariectomy, and the therapeutic effects of $1{\alpha}$,25 dihydroxycholecalciferol on the osteoporotic fracture in rats. The simple transverse fractures of rat fibulae were produced with a rotating diamond saw. The changes of the biochemical and mechanical indices of rats were investigated. The mechanical study based on bending test revealed the healing of the fibular fracture in the 5th week after simple transverse fracture. The osteoporosis impaired more the healing of osteoporotic fibular fracture than normal non-osteoporotic fibular fracture. The healing process of osteoporotic fracture was facilitated by the treatment with $1{\alpha}$,25 dihydroxycholecalciferol, however, was delayed more than the healing process of normal fracture. The bone strength based on the bending test also confirmed this tendency. The bone strengths in the 5th week after fracture of normal bone, osteoporotic bone, and $1{\alpha}$,25 dihydroxycholecalciferol-treated osteoporotic bone were 75%, 41%, and 67%, respectively, in comparison with those of intact bone. In conclusion, $1{\alpha}$,25 dihydroxycholecalciferol was effective in promoting the osteoporotic fracture healing.

Modified singular fracture process zone(S-FPZ) model is proposed in this paper to determine a fracture criterion for continuous crack propagation in concrete. The investigated fracture properties of the proposed fracture model are strain energy release rate at a micro-crack tip and the relationship between crack closure stress(CCS) and crack opening displacement(COD) in the FPZ. The proposed model can simulate the actual fracture energy of experimental results fairly well. The results of the experimental data analysis show that specimen geometry and loading condition did not affect the CCS-COD relation. However, the strain energy release rate is a function of not only specimen geometry but also crack extension. The strain energy release rate remained constantly at the minimum value up to the crack extension of 25 mm, and then it increased linearly to the maximum value. The maximum fracture criterion occurred at the peak load for specimens of large size. The fracture criterion remained at the maximum value after the peak load. The variation of the fracture criterion is caused by micro-cracking and micro-crack localization. The fracture criterion of strain energy release rate can simply be the size effect of concrete fracture, and it can be used to quantify the micro-cracking and micro-crack localizing behavior of concrete.

This paper presents experimental study of the static and dynamic fracture toughness behavior of a A1-6061 aluminum alloy reinforced alumina( .delta. -A1$_{2}$0$_{3}$) whiskers with 5%, 10%, 15% volume fraction. The static fracture tests using three-point bending specimen were performed by UTM25T. And drop weight impact tester performing dynamic fracture tests was used to measure dynamic locads applied to a fatigue-precracked specimes. The oneset of crack initiation was detected uwing a strain gage bonded near a crack tip. The value of static fracture toughness $K_{IC}$ and dynamic fracture toughness $K_{ID}$ were decided on the basis of linear elastic fracture mechanics. The effects of fiber volume fraction and loading on fracture toughness were investigated. The distribution of whiskers, bonding state and fracture interfaces involved in void, fiber pull-out state were investigated by optical microscopy(OM) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM)

In order to increase productivity through unmanned machining in CNC milling process, in-process tool fracture detection is required. In this paper, a new algorithm for tool fracture detection using cutting load variations was developed. For this purpose, developed were tool condition vector which is dimensionless indicator of cutting load and tool fracture index (TFI) which represents magnitude of tool fracture. Through cutting force simulation, tool fracture index was shown to be independent of tool run-outs and cutting condition variations. Using tool fracture index, the ratio of the tool fracture to feed per tooth could be indentified.

The fracture energy evaluated from the previous experimental results can be simulated by using the modified singular fracture process zone (S-FPZ) model. The fracture model has two fracture properties of strain energy release rate for crack extension and crack close stress versus crack width relationship $f_{ccs}(w)$ for fracture process zone (FPZ) development. The $f_{ccs}(w)$ relationship is not sensitive to specimen geometry and crack velocity. The fracture energy rate in the FPZ increases linearly with crack extension until the FPZ is fully developed. The fracture criterion of the strain energy release rate depends on specimen geometry and crack velocity as a function of crack extension. The behaviors of micro-cracking, micro-crack localization and full development of the FPZ in concrete can be explained theoretically with the variation of strain energy release rate with crack extension.

Fracture mechanics does work for concrete, provided that one uses a proper, nonlinear form of fracture mechanics in which a finite nonlinear zone at fracture front is being considered. The fracture process zone is a region ahead of a traction-free crack, and the development of model of fracture process zone is most important to describe fracture phenomena in concrete. This paper is about fracture behavior of concrete cylinder under lateral pressure. Concrete cylinders were made of high strength normal connote, steel fiber reinforced concrete and steel fiber reinforced polymer-impregnated concrete and concrete and the fracture behavior such as cracking propagation and ultimate load are observed. The fracture process zone is modelled by a Dugdale-Barenblatt type model with linear tension-softening curve and are implemented to the boundary element technique for the fracture analyses of the cylinders. The experimental results are compared with analysis results and tension-softening curves for the steel fiber reinforced concrete and steel fiber reinforced polymer-impregnated concrete are obtained by back analyses.
Purpose: To evaluate and compare the outcome between interlocking IM nailing and LCP fixation in the treatment of distal metaphyseal tibial fracture. Materials and Methods: From January 2000 to December 2007, 17 patient were treated by interlocking IM nail and 13 patient were treated by LCP fixation for distal metaphyseal tibial fracture. Results: According to AO classification, there were 2 type A1 fracture (12%), 6 type A2 fracture (36%), 3 type A3 fracture (18%), 4 type B1 fracture (24%), 1 type B3 fracture (6%), 1 type C1 fracture (6%) in interlocking IM nailing group and 1 type A2 fracture (7.7%), 2 type A3 fracture (15.4%), 3 type B1 fracture (23%), 3 type B2 fracture (23%), 3 type C1 fracture (23%), 1 type C2 fracture (7.7%) in LCP fixation group. The clinical functional outcome (according to AOFAS score) is 75.6 point in IM nailing group and 81.5 point in LCP fixation group. In IM nailing group, 65% of patient showed satisfactory result and In LCP fixation group, 77% of patient showed satisfactory result. Conclusion: There is no difference on clinical results between IM nailing and MIPPO (minimal invasive percutaneous plate osteosynthesis) group in the treatment of distal tibia fracture. But MIPPO group have higher subjective satisfactory score and less complication rate. The weakness of our study is a small case number and limited follow-up and we believe a better designed prospective study will be needed.
Objectives : This study was performed to evaluate the clinical results of the thoracolumbar fracture patients treated with oriental medical methods. Methods : We reviewed 40 patients of thoracolumbar fracture, who were hospitalized at WonKwang University KwangJu Oriental Medical Hospital and treated by oriental medical methods. We classified thoracolumbar fracture according to three column theory and then analyzed the cause of injury, sex-age distribution, treatment, and etc.. Results : 1. The distribution showed female predominance(72.5%) in sex and 70age-bracket predominance in age. 2. In the distribution of causes, the largest group was "lifting heavy objects"(40%) and the next was "slip down"(37.5%). 3. In the duration of symptoms, the largest group was the group of "acutest" (40%). 4. The distribution of injured level was L1 body the most(20%). 5. In classification of fracture, "compression fracture" was the most(57.5%) and the next was "burst fracture", "unstable fracture" in order. 7. Therapeutic effects above "fair" were 37 cases(92.5%). 8. The higher grade of clinical symptoms is, the lower therapeutic effect is. 9. In the distribution of treatment results according to classification of fracture, both the compression fracture and the burst fracture were almost same high and the unstable fracture is relatively lower than them. Conclusions : The result to treating thoracolumbar fracture by oriental medical methods is satisfactory.
Purpose: The nasal bone is the most frequently fractured facial bone. Discordance between the CT reading by the radiologist and the diagnosis by the plastic surgeon is not uncommon. This study examined the discordance and proposes a method for reducing the rate of discordance. Methods: The CT readings by the radiologist were compared with the diagnosis by the plastic surgeon in 716 patients with a clinically suspected nasal bone fracture. The CT reading was classified as the following: a nasal bone fracture, suspicious nasal bone fracture, old nasal bone fracture, no nasal bone fracture. The sensitivity, specificity and positive predictive value of the CT reading were calculated. Results: A nasal bone fracture was diagnosed in 646 patients by the plastic surgeon and confirmed intraoperatively. The reading of a "nasal bone fracture", "suspicious nasal bone fracture", "old nasal bone fracture" and "no nasal bone fracture" was 85.8%, 4.6%, 0.6% and 9.1% respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of the CT reading were 95.0% and 92.9%, respectively. The positive predictive value of the CT reading was 99.3%. The reading of "nasal bone fracture" that was not a nasal bone fracture clinically was 17.1% (12 of 70), and the reading of "no nasal bone fracture" or "old nasal bone fracture" that was found to be a nasal bone fracture clinically was 3.3% (21 of 646). The discordance rate between the CT reading by the radiologist and the diagnosis by the plastic surgeon was 4.6%. Conclusions: To reduce the discordance rate, we propose to hold a meeting with the plastic surgery-radiology staff to communicate the information regarding a suspicious or old nasal bone fracture.
The fracture behaviors of aluminum foils and sheet papers were analyzed on the basis of linear elastic fracture mechanics(LEFM). The fracture loads of the similarly shaped specimens were calculated by dimensional analysis. The actual fracture loads were measured using the simple tension equipment. The predicted fracture loads were compared with the experimental results.
