  • This study proposes a novel video traffic flow detection method based on machine vision technology. The three-frame difference method, which is one kind of a motion evaluation method, is used to establish initial background image, and then a statistical scoring strategy is chosen to update background image in real time. Finally, the background difference method is used for detecting the moving objects. Meanwhile, a simple but effective shadow elimination method is introduced to improve the accuracy of the detection for moving objects. Furthermore, the study also proposes a vehicle matching and tracking strategy by combining characteristics, such as vehicle's location information, color information and fractal dimension information. Experimental results show that this detection method could quickly and effectively detect various traffic flow parameters, laying a solid foundation for enhancing the degree of automation for traffic management.

  • Purpose: To investigate the relationship between 3D bone architectural parameters and direction-related elastic moduli of cancellous bone of mandibular condyle. Materials and Methods: Two micro-pigs (Micro-$pig^R$, PWG Genetics Korea) were used. Each pig was about 12 months old and weighing around 44 kg. 31 cylindrical bone specimen were obtained from cancellous bone of condyles for 3D analysis and measured by micro-computed tomography. Six parameters were trabecular thickness (Tb. Th), bone specific surface (BS/BV), percent bone volume (BV/TV), structure model index (SMI), degree of anisotropy (DA) and 3-dimensional fractal dimension (3DFD). Elastic moduli of three orthogonal directions (superior-inferior (SI), medial-lateral (ML), andterior-posterior (AP) direction) were calculated through finite element analysis. Results: Elastic modulus of superior-inferior direction was higher than those of other directions. Elastic moduli of 3 orthogonal directions showed different correlation with 3D architectural parameters. Elastic moduli of SI and ML directions showed significant strong to moderate correlation with BV/TV, SMI and 3DFD. Conclusion: Elastic modulus of cancellous bone of pig mandibular condyle was highest in the SI direction and it was supposed that the change into plate-like structure of trabeculae was mainly affected by increase of trabeculae of SI and ML directions.

  • Background & Objectives : Fractal Dimension(FD) could be an index of correlation between variable parameters in non-linear chaotic signals. We tried to demonstrate that EEG wave is compatible with chaotic waves by measuring the Lyapunov exponent index and compared the difference of FD between variable age groups(teens, 30's, 50's) Methods : We estimated the Lyapunov exponent index and the FD from digital EEG data among five persons in each normal age groups by using the software which is programmed in our laboratory. Statistical analysis was done with SPSS win 8.0. The statistical differences of Lyapunov exponent index and FD between each electrodes and each age groups were done with ANOVA and paired sample t-test. Result : The Lyapunov exponent indexes were larger than 1 in each electrode and age group. There is no statistical difference in FD between each electrodes and each age groups. Except in 30th age group. In this group the FD of right hemisphere is larger than that of left hemisphere. Conclusion : The result of Lyapunov exponent index means EEG wave is a non-linear chaotic signal. And the results of FD suggest that chaotic parameters of right hemisphere is larger than those of left hemisphere at rest at least in younger people. We think that chaotic parameters can be a useful tool in investigating the variable diseases or brain states.

  • In this paper, we propose an interpolation technique to rain attenuation data which represents dynamic characteristics by time variations. By using this technique, it is possible to sample the rain attenuation data at an arbitrary time interval, and thus it would play an important role in developing adaptive transmission scheme for countermeasuring rain attenuation. We propose the interpolation technique which can synthesizes rain attenuation data by extracting the most proper parameters required to emulate the dynamic characteristics of rain attenuation. Interpolation results to measured data of I minute time interval will be demonstrated, and it is shown that more exact performance evaluation of adaptive transmission scheme to countermeasure rain attenuation can be achieved.

  • In order to solve the difficulties of parameter settings in SA algorithm, an improved practical SA algorithm is proposed by employing the threading techniques, appropriate software structures, and dynamic adjustments of temperature parameters. Threads provide a mechanism to realize a parallel processing under a disperse environment by controlling the flux of internal information of an application. Thread services divide a process by multiple processes leading to parallel processing of information to access common data. Therefore, efficient search is achieved by multiple search processes, different initial conditions, and automatic temperature adjustments. The proposed are methods are evaluated, for three types of Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) (random-tour, fractal-tour, and TSPLIB test data)are used for the performance evaluation. The experimental results show that the computational time is 5% decreased comparing to conventional SA algorithm, furthermore there is no need for manual parameter settings. These results also demonstrate that the proposed method is applicable to real-world vehicle routing problems.

  • The Clark unit hydrograph is a three parameter synthetic unit hydrograph procedure that can be used in flood hydrology. The present work is an attempt to estimate parameters of the Clark model in ungaged basin by means of relationships that provides for the hydrologic similarity. The time area concentration curve was determined by analytic method and the Clark model was generalized by being made dimensionless form. Calculation of the concentration time was made with the formula fractal concept used, and the storage coefficient was estimated by the empirical and regional equation. Evaluation on Dongok basin was performed to prove the validity of the proposed model. The derived hydrograph predicted the observed hydrograph fairly well.

  • The aging diagnosis technique using partial discharge detection method detects partial discharge signals cause of power equipment failuer and able to forecast the aging state of insulation system through analysis algorithm, in this paper accumulates HFPD signal during constant scheduled cycles to build HFPD pattern and then analyzes HFPD pattern using statistical parameters and ${\Delta}F$ pattern. The 3D pattern is composed of detected signal frequency, amplitude and repeated number and the FRPDA(frequency resolved partial discharge analysis) technique is used in 3D pattern construction. The ${\Delta}F$ pattern shows variation characteristics of amplitude gradient of consecutive HFPD signal Pulses and able to classify discharge types-internal discharge, surface discharge and coronal discharge etc. Fractal mathematics applied to ${\Delta}F$ pattern quantification and neural networks is used in aging diagnostic algorithm.

  • The irregular shape of the disturbances is a fundamental issue for mining engineers at the Sidi Chennane phosphate deposit in Morocco. A precise classification of disturbed areas is therefore necessary to understand their part in the overall volume of phosphate. In this paper, we investigate the theoretical and practical aspects of studying and measuring multifractal spectrums as a defining and representative parameter for distinguishing between the phosphate deposit of a low rate of disturbances and the deposit of a high rate. An empirical multifractal approach was used by analyzing the disturbed areas through the geoelectric images of an area located in the Sidi Chennane phosphate deposit. The Generalized fractal dimension, D(q), the Singularities of strength, α(q), the local dimension, f(α) and their conjugate parameter the mass exponent, τ(q) as well as f(α)-α spectrum were the common multifractal parameters used. The results reported show wide variations of the analyzed images, indicating that the multifractal analysis is an indicator for evaluate and characterize the disturbed areas within the phosphates deposits through the studied geoelectric images. This could be the starting point for future work aimed at improving phosphate exploration planning.

  • Many foundation projects are built on red-bed soft rocks, and the damage evolution of this kind of rocks affects the safety of these projects. At present, there is insufficient research on the damage evolution of red-bed soft rocks, especially the progressive process from mesoscopic texture change to macroscopic elastoplastic deformation. Therefore, based on the dual-porosity characteristics of pores and fissures in soft rock, we adopted a cellular automata model to simulate the propagation of these voids in soft rocks under an external load. Further, we established a macro-mesoscopic damage model of red-bed soft rocks, and its reliability was verified by tests. The results indicate that the relationship between the number and voids size conformed to a quartic polynomial, whereas the relationship between the damage variable and damage porosity conformed to a logistic curve. The damage porosity was affected by dual-porosity parameters such as the fractal dimension of pores and fissures. We verified the reliability of the model by comparing the test results with an established damage model. Our research results described the progressive process from mesoscopic texture change to macroscopic elastoplastic deformation and provided a theoretical basis for the damage evolution of these rocks.

  • This study analyzed the applicability of a rainfall downscaling algorithm in space-time multifractal framework (RDSTMF) in Korean Peninsula. To achieve this purpose, the 8 heavy rainfall events that occurred in Korea during the period between 2008 and 2012 were analyzed using the radar rainfall imagery. The result of the analysis indicated that there is a strong tendency of the multifractality for all 8 heavy rainfall events. Based on the multifractal exponents obtained from the analysis, the parameters of the RDSTMF were obtained and the relationship between the average intensity of the rainfall events and the parameters of the RDSTMF was developed. Based on this relationship, the synthetic space-time rainfall fields were generated using the RDSTMF. Then, the generated synthetic space-time rainfall fields were compared to the observation. The result of the comparison indicated that the RDSTMF can accurately reproduce the multifractal exponents of the observed rainfall field up to 3rd order and the cumulative density function of the observed space-time rainfall field with a reasoable accuracy.
