The research was performed to predict the potential landslide with roughness index. It was known that fractal dimension and surface area index can be represented the topography, specially when the natural slopes were rough or rugged. A test site was selected and fractal dimension and surface area index were calculated from the irregular triangle network. Fractal dimension were ranged between $2.016{\sim}2.046$ and surface area index $1.56E+07{\sim}2.59E+07$. Surface area index increased as fractal dimension increased. Slope stability was calculated by infinite slope stability analysis model and was compared to slope stability by fractal and surface area index. In the result, unsafe zones where slope stability is under 1.1 were $5.11{\sim}6.25%$ for the test site. It can be said that fractal dimension and surface area index are a good index to evaluate the slope stability because when fractal dimension and surface area index are greater, then stability of the site is more unsafe.
Pavement management systems require systematic monitoring of pavement surfaces to determine preventive and corrective maintenance. The process involves the accumulation of large amounts of visual data, typically obtained from site visitation. The pavement surface condition is then correlated to a pavement distress index that is based on a scoring system previously established by state or federal agencies. The scoring system determines if the pavement section requires maintenance, overlay or reconstruction. One of the surface distresses forming part of the overall pavement distress index is the Alligator Crack Index (AC Index). The AC Index involves the visual evaluation of the crack severity of a section of a pavement as being low, medium, or high. This evaluation is then integrated into a formula in order to obtain the AC Index. In this study a quantification of the visual evaluation of the severity of alligator cracking is carried out using photographs and the fractal dimension concept from fractal theory. Pavements with low levels of cracking were found to have a fractal dimension equal to 1.051. Pavements with moderate levels of cracking had a fractal dimension equal to 1.1754. Pavements with high degrees of cracking had a fractal dimension that varied between 1.5037 (high) and 1.7111 (very high). Pavements with a level of cracking equal to 1.8976 represented pavements that disintegrated and developed potholes. Thus, the visual evaluation of the state of cracking of a pavement (the AC Index) could be enhanced with the use of the fractal dimension concept from fractal theory.
In this study, we examined the fractal structure of the Nikkei225, HangSeng, Shanghai Stock Exchange and Straits Times Index of Singapore. Empirical analysis was performed via non-parametric, semi-parametric long memory tests and also fractal dimension calculations. In order to avoid spurious long memory features, besides the Detrended Fluctuations Analysis (DFA), we also used Smith's (2005) modified GPH method. As for fractal dimension calculations, they were conducted via Box-Counting and Variation (p=1) tests. According to the results, while there is no long memory property in log returns of any index, we found evidence for long memory properties in the volatility of the HangSeng, the Shanghai Stock Exchange and the Straits Times Index. However, we could not find any sign of long memory in the volatility of Nikkei225 index using either the DFA or modified GPH test. Fractal dimension analysis also demonstrated that all raw index prices have fractal structure properties except for the Nikkei225 index. These findings showed that the Nikkei225 index has the most efficient market properties among these markets.
The processes of chemical and physical weathering occur simultaneously. The objective of this study was to estimate the degree weathered using fractal dimension through comparison with chemical characteristic of soil samples from Pohang (PH) and Kimpo (KP). Comparing chemical characteristics with fractal dimension, $SiO_2$, $Na_2O$, $K_2O$ content decreased and loss of ignition increased as fractal dimension increased. And fractal dimension showed high correlation with CWI while ATI, STI CIW, PI, CIA and RR demonstrated different degrees of correlation with fractal dimension. The tendency of the changes in oxide content and chemical weathering index with increasing fractal dimension appeared to be similar with the chemical changes due to weathering. Therefore, fractal dimension could be a good indicator representing the extent of weathering and chemical changes.
The fractal method has recently been applied to a model for determining soil grain size distribution. The objective of this study is to review the applicability of the fractal method for a analysis of submarine sedimentary environments by comparing fractal constants with grain size statistical analysis for the soil samples of Pohang (PH) and Namhae (NH). The y-interception of log (grain size)-log (passing) equation was also used because grain size distribution couldn't be expressed with fractal dimension only. The result of comparison between fractal constants (dimension, y-interception) and grain size statistical indices, the fractal dimension was directly proportional to the mean and the sorting. And the y-interception showed high correlation with the mean. The fractal dimension and y-interception didn't show significant correlation with the skewness and the kurtosis. Thus regression equations between fractal constants and two statistical indices (mean, sorting) were derived. All classifications of the mean and the sorting could be determined using the regression equation based on the fractal dimension and y-interception. Therefore, fractal constants could be used as an alternative index representing the sedimentary environments instead of the mean and sorting.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine whether the results of fractal analysis can be used as criteria for midpalatal suture maturation evaluation. Methods: The study included 131 subjects aged over 18 years of age (range 18.1-53.4 years) who underwent cone-beam computed tomography. Skeletonized images of the midpalatal suture were obtained via image processing software and used to calculate fractal dimensions. Correlations between maturation stage and fractal dimensions were calculated using Spearman's correlation coefficient. Optimal fractal dimension cut-off values were determined using a receiver operating characteristic curve. Results: The distribution of maturation stages of the midpalatal suture according to the cervical vertebrae maturation index was highly variable, and there was a strong negative correlation between maturation stage and fractal dimension (-0.623, p < 0.001). Fractal dimension was a statistically significant indicator of dichotomous results with regard to maturation stage (area under curve = 0.794, p < 0.001). A test in which fractal dimension was used to predict the resulting variable that splits maturation stages into ABC and D or E yielded an optimal fractal dimension cut-off value of 1.0235. Conclusions: There was a strong negative correlation between fractal dimension and midpalatal suture maturation. Fractal analysis is an objective quantitative method, and therefore we suggest that it may be useful for the evaluation of midpalatal suture maturation.
This paper is focused on fractal analysis of the surface cracking, a new tool for safety evaluation of corroded reinforced concrete (RC) beams. Comprehensive experimental investigations, including flexural tests, coupon tests on strength evaluation of corroded concrete and rusty rebar, and pullout tests to determine bond strength between concrete and rebar were carried out on nine Corroded Reinforced Concrete Beams (CRCB) exposed to an aggressive environment for more than 10 years. In combination with test results from a previous study on CRCBs fabricated in the laboratory from accelerated methods, it is found that, for both types of beams, the surface cracking distributions are fractal in character at loading and failure stages. Fractal dimension is calculated for all specimens at different corrosion states based on fractal analysis method. Relationships between the fractal dimension and mechanical properties of corroded concrete, rebar corrosion ratio, and ductility of CRCBs are discussed in detail. It is concluded that the fractal dimension can act as a damage index and can be efficiently used to describe the corrosion state of CRCBs.
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of starvation periods with aerobic or non-aerobic conditions on the organic removal efficiencies and physical characteristics of activated sludge for treating saline and non-saline wastewater. During the experiment, MLSS, MLVSS, sludge volume index (SVI), floc size and fractal dimension, $COD_{Mn}$ removal efficiencies were monitored. The reductions of MLSS, MLVSS and SVI with maintaining the sludge under a non-aerobic condition during starvation periods were smaller than those under a aerobic condition. Floc size, fractal dimension and $COD_{Mn}$ removal efficiencies were less decreased under non-aerobic condition than under aerobic condition. And SVI were strongly correlated with floc size and fractal dimension. Consequently, the result showed that maintaining the activated sludge under non-aerobic starvation conditions was better strategy than that under aerobic starvation conditions as it adapted and resisted to starvation.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether panoramic radiographs were useful in predicting osteoporosis. Materials and Methods: 50 postmenoposal women between the age of 41.8 and 78.5 were classified as normal and osteoporosis groups according to the bone mineral density of lumbar vertebrae. Panoramic radiographs were taken. Age, body mass index, remaining mandibular teeth, mandibular cortical thickness and morphology, and fractal dimensions at periapical areas of mandibular first molars were evaluated to differentiate the two groups. Results: The age of osteoporotic group was statistically significantly higher than that of normal group (p<0.05), but not the body mass index or number of remaining mandibular teeth. The mean fractal dimension of osteoporotic group was $1.391{\pm}0.085$, and was significantly lower than that of the normal group, which was $1.523{\pm}0.725$ (p<0.01). Thick mandibular cortical thickness was common in normal group, whereas thin or very thin mandibular cortical thickness was common in osteoporotic group and the difference was significant (p < 0.05). C2 pattern was common in normal group followed by C1, whereas C2 was common in osteoporotic group followed by C3. The difference was statistically significant (p< 0.0 1). Conclusion: Age, mandibular cortical thickness and shape, fractal dimension on panoramic radiographs were useful in predicting osteoporosis.
