  • The maintenance of bridges installed in rivers is carried out through facility safety inspection and repair & reinforcement procedures according to the results. Many studies have been so far conducted on the safety check of the bridge upperstructure because of the ease of access. However as it is impossible to directly investigate whether the pier foundation installed in the river has been scoured. Management of underwater foundations has remained based on theory. In this study, the scour of the bridge foundation installed in such a river was realized in 3D form by using an echo sounder and VRS. This made it possible to predict the scour pattern through comparison and analysis with the ground height of the riverbed at the time of the bridge installation. Based on these results, if the pier foundation is used as an initial data to determine whether or not local scour is present and to predict long-term scouring, bridge collapse due to foundation scour can be prevented.

  • There is an increasing need for the estimation of foundation piles whose depths are unknown. Especially in repair and reinforcement works or in safety inspection and assessment to the big structures whose foundations are piles, the accurate information about the depth of foundation piles is one of the most important factors. A borehole magnetic tool has been developed and tested to meet this object. The fundamental base is that there usually exist many re-bars inside the foundation structure such as piles, and these re-bars are ferromagnetic materials which cause strong induced magnetic field comparable to the earth magnetic field. It utilizes flux-gate type magnetometer which measures 3-components of the magnetic field. Taking vertical derivatives of vertical component of the measured magnetic field, we can expect the error limit of estimating the depth of the pile end less than 20 cm in favorable condition. The maximum measurable distance is about 3 m to the pile from the borehole. The field data show that borehole magnetics is one of the most accurate, fast, and reliable methods for this object so far, as long as there is no magnetic materials such as deep located steel pipe or power cables close to the foundation piles.

  • This paper presents the evaluation of foundation stability according to decrease of the foundation contact area on the ground. In order to carry out this research, the experimental and numerical studies are performed. In the experimental study, the carefully controled laboratory model tests are carried out with different foundation size and types. The model test results are analyzed and interpreted by analytical and numerical calculation in order to verify both results obtained from experimental and numerical studies. It is clearly found from the results that the foundation stability is considerably reduced when the foundation contact area ratio is less than 75%. This research may be very useful to develop the economical foundation type.

  • Although most bridge foundations are usually constructed by Caisson, terrain difficulties sometimes bring about constructing bridge foundations by Jacket piles. This study investigated the dynamic characteristics of Caisson and Jacket by testing the impact applied to actual bridge foundations. The test result showed that the damping ratio of the foundation constructed by Jacket and Caisson were measured 1-2% and 3-6%, respectively. Considering the lateral deflection measured by the impact test, the rigidity of foundations constructed by Jacket was assessed about 1/5 - 1/6 of those constructed by Caisson. It implies that designing bridge foundations should include and reflect the dynamic analysis of bridge foundation.

  • To utilize building information modeling (BIM) technology at the bridge maintenance stage, it is necessary to integrate large quantities of bridge inspection and model data for object-oriented information management. This research aims to establish the benefits of utilizing the extended industry foundation class (IFC)-BIM and ontology for bridge inspection information management. The IFC entities were extended to represent the bridge objects, and a method of generating the extended IFC-based information model was proposed. The bridge inspection ontology was also developed by extraction and classification of inspection concepts from the AASHTO standard. The classified concepts and their relationships were mapped to the ontology based on the semantic triples approach. Finally, the extended IFC-based BIM model was integrated with the ontology for bridge inspection data management. The effectiveness of the proposed framework for bridge inspection information management by integration of the extended IFC-BIM and ontology was tested and verified by extracting bridge inspection data via the SPARQL query.

  • In this study, physical and engineering properties of ordinary portland cement and microcement were investigated to verify reinforcing effect of underpinning of open caisson foundation by using microcement grouting. Laboratory injection tests such as infiltration and injection in case of seepage for the stream bed soil at ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ Great Bridge in Seoul were carried out. Field injection tests to reinforce open caisson foundation at ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ Great Bridge were performed and the ability of application by microcement grouting was evaluated. From the test results, physical and engineering properties of microcement are better than those of ordinary portland cement. Also, the ability of infiltration and solidity in case of seepage is better than that of ordinary portland cement. Therefore, it is concluded that microcement is an excellent material to reinforce open caisson foundation of the existing bridge structure under the water and can be used as underpinning material of general foundations.

  • Leakage incidents due to the fault of hazmat tank foundations are likely to cause the tremendous fire disaster in the national industry cluster area. The proper design and construction of tank foundation should be required to prevent the tank fire. In the study, the types of typical tank foundations were classified and modeling the individual tank type for 3D FEM analysis was performed to suggest the guideline for the design and construction of tank foundations. Matters to be attended of the foundation design and construction are reviewed through the comparison assessment of the numerical analysis results of the foundation types.

  • In the seismic design the pile foundation system of the buildings generally have been modeled to have a fixed end for its convenience and conservativeness. But it is necessary to consider the soil-structure interaction for more reliable design. In this study, the framed tube building and brace tube building with pile foundation system under earthquake were analyzed considering soil-structural interaction by 3 pile foundation modeling methods; fixed-end model, 6 springs model and p-y springs model. And 2 soil conditions were used in analysis. For each cases, displacements, drifts, maximum stress, periods and 1st mode mass participation ratios were compared.
