  • Faced with global agenda of greenhouse abatement program including regulations and $CO_2$ emission trading scheme, shipping companies are enforced to a high level of efficiency in fuel consumption. Accordingly shipbuilding companies worldwide are required to develop fuel-efficient ships which otherwise traditionally consume a great amount of fossil fuels. In this dissertation, relevant to the improvement of fuel efficiency for commercial ships, design methodology through the numerical simulations are intensively described. This work consists of derivation of effective hydrodynamic design practice based on the application of longitudinal grooves to effectively improve the pressure distribution around ship hull. The primary objective of the present study is to improve ship resistance performance using longitudinal grooves which originate from long strips on the abdomen of humpback whale. Several groove shapes have been extensively investigated and the proposed shape efficiently controlled the variation of pressure distributions acting on the hull surface.

  • In the past several decades, biofuels have emerged as candidates to help mitigate the issues of global warming, fossil fuel depletion and, in some cases, atmospheric pollution. To date, the only biofuels that have achieved any significant penetration in the global transportation sector are ethanol and biodiesel. The global consumption of biodiesel was rapidly increased from 2005. The goal of this study was to examine the chemical composition on particulate pollutant emissions from a diesel engine operating on several different biodiesels. Tests were performed on non-road diesel engine. Experiments were performed on 5 different fuel blends at 2 different engine loading conditions (50% and 75%). 5 different fuel blends were ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD, 100%), soy biodiesel (Blend 20% and Blend 100%) and canola biodiesel (Blend 20% and Blend 100%). The chemical properties of particulate pollutants were characterized using an Aerodyne High Resolution Time of Flight Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS). Organic matter and nitrate were generally the most abundant aerosol components and exhibited maximum concentration of $1207{\mu}g/m^3$ and $30{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively. On average, the oxidized fragment families ($C_xH_yO_1{^+}$, and $C_xH_yO_z{^+}$) account for ~13% of the three family sum, while ~87% comes from the $C_xH_y{^+}$ family. The two peaks of $C_2H_3O_2$ (m/z 59.01) and $C_3H_7O$ (m/z 59.04) located at approximately m/z 59 could be used to identify atmospheric particulate matter directly to biodiesel exhaust, as distinguished from that created by petroleum diesel in the AMS data.

  • With current real economic growth of more than 10% per year, the Chinese energy consumption is rapidly increasing. Coal supply consists of the vast majority of China's total energy consumption requirements in 2008. China, the largest energy consumer, is expected to be heavily dependent on coal for future power generation, too (IEA,2009). A growing concern on global warming, on the other hand, drives Chinese government to declare her commitment to the reduction of CO2 emission by 2020. In this paper, China's energy market is examined for the current and future primary energy mix. Coal is found to be the biggest part accounting for 68.7% of total primary energy consumption while coal-fired power accounts for over 80% of the total power generation. The importance of Clean Coal Technology is being discussed based on the findings of the importance of coal in China's economy and its sustainable development. Among the technologies involved, a brief investigation of IGCC(Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle) technology with a review on current IGCC projects in China are provided from the perspective of environmental benefits. Studies on regional Chinese power market is also conducted. It is found that the regulated power tariff in electricity system makes the power suppliers suffer from financial loss and changes in the electricity price system is under serious consideration by Chinese government. Even though Chinese power market system causes difficulties of commercialization for IGCC technology, the potential benefits will be high due to China's huge requirements of power generating capacity and its heavy reliance on coal if the electricity price system can be changed smoothly.

  • The global warming caused by consumption of fossil fuel and energy has been interested. Therefore, several policies and regulations have been discussed to reduce greenhouse gas emission and effective energy consumption. The construction industry that takes 45% of energy consumption makes efforts to develop green construction methods and materials and reuseable energy. However, there is no common definition to calculate greenhouse gas and database in the construction industry. Especially, transportation infrastructure like road, railway, harbor, and airport consumes 21% energy of construction facilities. Therefore, this paper develops the causal relationship to define performance of sustainable road construction and maintenance. The performance indices are grouped into economic, social, and envirionmental impacts. Then, the causal map is developed based on survey results of construction experts. This will provide the baseline to evaluate the performance of sustainable construction and to establish the objective goals.

  • The increase of greenhouse gas emission and decrease of fossil fuel are being caused by the indiscreet consumption of energy by people. Recently, green policy has been globally implemented to reduce energy consumption. This paper studied the research to reduce the energy consumption in buildings, by using the heat storage properties of PCM. PCM has to prevent leakage from the liquid state. Therefore, we prepared form stable PCM, by using the vacuum impregnation method. Three kinds of organic PCMs were impregnated into the structure of porous material. The characteristics of the composites were determined by using SEM, DSC, FTIR and TGA. SEM morphology showed the micro structure of silica fume/PCM. Also, thermal properties were examined by DSC and TGA analyses; and the chemical bonding of the composite was determined by FTIR analysis.

  • Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by fossil fuels consumption is one of the challenging issues worldwide. Renewable energy source (RES)-based energy supply system can be a promising alternative to the current fossil fuel-based system. In this study, we propose an optimization approach for designing a stand-alone hybrid energy supply system using RES and evaluating economic performances of the energy systems. The suggested approach is used to answer the questions; i) what technology is suitable to various demand sectors in different regions, and ii) how does it cost to meet the demand in term of the levelized costs of energy (LCOE). We illustrate the applicability of the proposed approach by applying to the design problem of energy supply systems for residential, agricultural and commercial sectors of Korea. As the results of LCOE analysis, for the residential sector has the LCOE ranging of $0.37~$0.44/kWh, the agricultural sector of $0.15~$0.61/kWh and the commercial sector of $0.12~$0.28/kWh.

  • Recently, interest in alternative energy has been increasing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fossil fuel consumption in accordance with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change(UNFCCC). Accordingly, there is a need to use waste heat that unused throughout industrial systems for lowering the concentration of energy on fossil fuels. In particular, government support projects for the energy recycling of agriculture and fisheries such as cultivation of tropical crops and aquaculture are being actively carried out by utilizing waste heat and thermal effluents caused from large-scale industrial complexes including power plants. The study was conducted on supplier (power plant), consumer (farmer) and stakeholders (constructor and local governments) of domestic demonstration areas using waste heat that is abandoned from the power plant in the form of thermal effluents. It investigated the overall improvement and feasibility of government funded projects through field interviews and questionnaire-type surveys. The results of this study are expected to provide basic directions for the operation of the project in terms of nationwide expansion and diffusion of the heat source supply project at horticultural greenhouse by utilizing the thermal effluents from power plant.

  • This article analyzes causal relationships among gross domestic product(GDP), electricity consumption, carbon dioxide($CO_2$) emission and foreign direct investments(FDI) inflow of Korea over the period from 1976 to 2014, using unit root test, cointegration test, and vector error correction model(VECM). As the results, this article found (1) a long-run bi-directional causality between GDP and electricity consumption, which may imply a negative impact of electricity consumption-saving policy on economic growth, (2) uni-directional short- and long-run causalities running from $CO_2$ emission to GDP, and a uni-directional long-run causality running from $CO_2$ emission to electricity consumption, which can result in a negative impact of $CO_2$ emission reduction policy on economic growth and electricity consumption, (3) a uni-directional long-run causality running from FDI to GDP, and uni-directional short- and long-run causalities running from FDI to electricity consumption, which may result from relatively lower electricity prices than investing countries, (4) no causality between FDI and $CO_2$ emission, which is based on the characteristics of FDI composed of service industries. Considering the above causal relationships among the four variables, the policy implication needs to focus on the electricity demand management based on the relevant R&Ds, and on the gradual transition from fossil fuel- to renewable-energy. Adaptive policy to increase the FDI inflow is also needed.

  • Paris Agreement signed in January 2015 is a new rule that will replace the existing Kyoto Protocol. The new agreement needs new demands and challenges to minimize carbon emissions. Especially, even though agricultural sector occupies only 1.8% in the national energy consumption, the portion of the energy being occupied in agricultural production costs very high. Although renewable energy and energy-saving facilities is being developed and disseminated for replacing fossil fuel energy and saving energy, the installation-rate is not enough high. Thus, this paper developed Korean-style smart farm system, and carried out the experiment to show the performance of energy savings through analyzing proper environment in domestic situation.

  • The global warming of the Korean Peninsula proceeds most rapidly in the world and its abnormal climate is more deepening. In the result of the surged electricity consumption by intense heat of summer and severe cold of winter, electricity supply and demand status is in hard situation. Currently, the supply of natural gas is increased because natural gas has the lowest greenhouse-gas emissions among the existed fossil fuel. Natural gas cooling has a lot of advantage such as decreasing electricity peak, reducing construction expenses in additional power plant, operating natural gas storage facilities efficiently, and playing a role as distributed generations. Therefore, this study analyzes the economic feasibilities of gas cooling as an alternative for electric power load management.
