Electromagnetic-structure Co-simulation Analysis of Aluminum Pipe with Electromagnetic Forming according to Temperature (전자기 성형 시 온도에 따른 알루미늄 파이프의 전자기-구조 연동해석)

  • The high-velocity electromagnetic forming (EMF) process is based on the Lorentz force and the energy of the magnetic field. The advantages of EMF include improved formability, wrinkle reduction, and non-contact forming. In this study, the electromagnetic-structural interlocking analysis was performed in order to analyze the moldability of aluminum pipe using electromagnetic molding. The magnetic flux density was decreased due to increasing electrical resistance as the temperature increased, and the stress-strain curve decreased. The higher the temperature, the lower the flow stress, increasing deformation.

  • Rubber-pad forming process for materials such as metal in which portions of the die which act upon the material is composed of a natural or synthetic rubber or elastomer material. This makes the rubber pad forming process relatively cheap and flexible, high accuracy for small product series in particular. In this study, we carried out the physical test and finite element analysis of elastomer such as natural rubber and urethane for steel rack rube forming. The non-linear property of elastomer which are described as strain energy function are important parameter to design and evaluate of elastomer component. These are determined by material tests which are uni-axial tension and bi-axial tension. This study is concerned with simulation and investigation of the significant parameters associated with this process.

Comparative Study on Description Schemes to Perform Finite Element Analysis in Incremental Forming Process (점진성형의 공정평가를 위한 유한요소해석에서 묘사기법 적용에 관한 비교 연구)

  • Incremental forming is a cold working process in which a small part of the material is being deformed and the area of local deformation is moving over the entire material. In this paper, we study description schemes to perform finite element analysis for the incremental forming. The selected description schemes to examine are the Lagrangian description and the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) description. The sliding boundary scheme coupled with ALE is also examined to overcome the distortion problems of elements on the contact surface. Results show that the ALE description with the sliding boundary scheme is most favorable in overcoming the distortion of elements. This description leads to make the simulation continued to the final stage of the incremental forming. On the other hand, the Lagrangian description as well as the original ALE description makes the elements much distorted and the analysis is stopped long before arriving at the final shape of deformation.

A Study on the Roll Forming Characteristics of an Asymmetric Roller with a 6 mm Steel Plate using the Finite Element Method (유한요소법을 사용한 6 mm 후판의 비대칭 롤포밍 성형변형특성에 관한 연구)

  • As a novel method to produce a steel beam with 6mm thickness for buildings, a continuous roll forming process is reported. The roll shape is asymmetric and consists of 6 pairs of rollers to bend the steel plate from $0^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$. Results obtained upon application of the roll forming process showed that the angle of the section plate is $90^{\circ}$. However, defects such as bowing and camber as high as 3.2 [$^{\circ}/m$] were observed. A FEM (Finite Element Method) analysis was applied to investigate the causes of the results for the region between rollers no. 5 and no. 6. The results of a FEM simulation of deformation and stress showed that there are some strong peak stresses on the upper surface and bottom surface of the material. The positions of the peak stresses did not show a correspondence between the upper and bottom surfaces. Thus, the defects in the process of roll forming with a 6 mm thick steel plate occur by the unbalanced stresses between the upper surface and bottom surface of the material in this study.

  • Wireless power transfer is more convenient than wired power transfer, but has a shorter transfer distance and lower efficiency. In addition, it is difficult to charge multiple devices simultaneously. In this paper, we propose a method of magnetic beam forming by using multiple transmitters in order to increase transfer distance and improve efficiency of wireless power transfer. To do this, the relationship between the transmitter coil current and magnetic field at the center of receiver coil is modelled, and calculate the optimal transmitter coil current using the characteristics of the pseudoinverse. Finally, the validity of the proposed method is verified by simulation.

  • Preform design techniques have been investigated in efforts to reduce die wear and forming load and to improve material flow, filing ratio, etc. In hot forging processes, a thin deformed part of a workpiece, known as a flash, is formed in the narrow gap between the upper and lower tools. Although designers make tools that generate a flash intentionally in order to improve flow properties, excessive flash increases die wear and forming load. Therefore, it is necessary to make a preform shape that can reduce the excessive flash without changing flow properties. In this paper, a new preform design technique is proposed to reduce the excessive flash in a metal forging process. After a finite element simulation of the process is carried out with an initial billet, the flow of material in the flash region is traced from the final shape to the initial billet. The region belonging to the flash is then easily found in the initial billet. The finite element simulation is then carried out again with the modified billet from which the selected region has been removed. In several iterations of this technique, the optimal preform shape that minimizes the amount of flash without changing the forgeability can be obtained.

  • The drawbeads, which are used for controlling the flow of the sheet into die cavity by imposing the tension and for preventing the forming defects like wrinkling, springback, etc. during the sheet forming process, affect the formability strongly because of the differences in the restraint and opening forces according to the drawbead shapes and dimensions. In this study, the experimental device enabling to measure the drawbead restraining and opening forces is manufactured and the drawing forces of circular, square, and step drawbeads are measured. The drawbead restraining and opening forces of a circular drawbead are increased as its drawbead height is increased. Similarly, those of a square drawbead are increased as its height is increased and shoulder radii decreased. The drawbead forces obtained from the experiment were compared with those calculated in the numerical simulation of stamping process of automotive fender. Good agreement was found so that the experimental measurements can be used in the simulation of auto-body stamping process.

Formation of globular clusters in cosmological radiation hydrodynamic simulation

  • This is a presentation of the paper published as Kimm et al. 2016, ApJ, 823, 52. We investigate the formation of metal-poor globular clusters (GCs) at the center of two dark matter halos with $Mhalo{\sim}4{\times}107Msun$ at z>10 using cosmological radiation-hydrodynamics simulations. We find that very compact (${\leq}1$ pc) and massive (${\sim}6{\times}105Msun$) clusters form rapidly when pristine gas collapses isothermally with the aid of efficient $Ly{\alpha}$ emission during the transition from molecular-cooling halos to atomic-cooling halos. Because the local free-fall time of dense star-forming gas is very short (${\ll}1Myr$), a large fraction of the collapsed gas is turned into stars before stellar feedback processes blow out the gas and shut down star formation. Although the early stage of star formation is limited to a small region of the central star-forming disk, we find that the disk quickly fragments due to metal enrichment from supernovae. Sub-clusters formed in the fragmented clouds eventually merge with the main cluster at the center. The simulated clusters closely resemble the local GCs in mass and size but show a metallicity spread that is much wider than found in the local GCs. We discuss a role of pre-enrichment by Pop III and II stars as a potential solution to the latter issue. Although not without shortcomings, it is encouraging that a naive blind (not tuned) cosmological simulation presents a possible channel for the formation of at least some massive GCs.

Hydroforming Simulation of High-strength Steel Cross-members in an Automotive Rear Subframe

  • Hydroforming is a forming technology in which a steel tube is set in a die and formed to fit a specified shape by applying hydraulic pressure from inside the tube while also applying force in the tube axial direction (axial feed). In present study, the entire design process chain for an automotive cross-member was simulated and developed using hydroforming technology on high-strength steel. The part design stage required a feasibility study. The process was designed using computer-aided design techniques to confirm the actual hydroformability of the part in detail. The possibility of using hydroformable cross-member parts was examined using cross-sectional analyses, which were essential to ensure the formability of the tube material for each forming step, including pre-bending and hydroforming. The die design stage included all the components of a prototyping tool. Press interference was investigated in terms of geometry and thinning.
