  • As semi-solid forging (SSF) is compared with conventional casting such as gravity die-casting and squeeze casting, the product without inner defects can be obtained from semi-solid forming and globular microstructure as well. Generally, SSF consists of reheating, forging, and ejecting processes. In the reheating process, the materials are heated up to the temperature between the solidus and liquidus line at which the materials exists in the form of liquid-solid mixture. The process variables such as reheating time, reheating temperature, reheating holding time, and induction heating power has large effect on the quality of the reheated billets. It is difficult to consider all the variables at the same time for predicting the quality. In this paper, Taguchi method, regression analysis and neural network were applied to analyze the relationship between processing conditions and solid fraction. A356 alloy was used for the present study, and the learning data were extracted from the reheating experiments. Results by neural network were in good agreement with those by experiment. Polynominal regression analysis was formulated using the test data from neural network. Optimum processing condition was calculated to minimize the grain size and solid fraction standard deviation or to maximize the specimen temperature average. Discussion is given about reheating process of row material and results are presented with regard to accurate process variables fur proper solid fraction, specimen temperature and grain size.

  • The metallic bipolar plate in PEMFC is widely used for automotive driving because of its advantages, i) high strength, ii) high chemical stability, iii) low gas permeability and iv) applicability to mass production. Especially, the metallic bipolar plate which is manufactured with the sheet metal stamping process can be applied in automotive PEMFC with less volume and weight because of its thin thickness but the formability and springback problems arise in real manufacturing process. The assessment for formability and springback of metallic bipolar plate should be performed before making stamping die sets. In this work, the methodology for determining the allowable draft angle of flow passage is introduced by using finite element analysis. In analysis results, as the draft angle of flow passage increase, the major strain and thinning is increase with exponential function. The allowable draft angle without fracture is presented by fitting the results. Additionally, the staking results with manufactured metallic bipolar plates by stamping process is presented.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the warm deep drawability of square cups of clad sheet metals, by changing temperatures of die and blankholder and blank materials. Two kinds of clad sheet metals, STS304-A1050-STS304 and STS304-A1050-STS430 were chosen for experiments. The relative drawing depth of STS304-A1050-STS304 clad sheet was increased up to 4.4 at $150^{\circ}C$ that was $29\%$ higher than at room temperature, whereas STS304-A1050-STS430 material was improved to 3.65 at $120^{\circ}C$ which was $16\%$ better than at room temperature. In addition, comparison of wall thickness and hardness of a warm drawn cup with those of room temperature showed more even distributions. Therefore, warm forming technique was confirmed to ive better results in deep drawing of stainless clad sheet metal.

  • Neonatal mortality rate (NMR) or infant mortality rate (IMR) are the rate of deaths per 1,000 live births at which babies of either less than four weeks or of one year of age die, respectively. The NMR and IMR are commonly accepted as a measure of the general health and well-being of a population. Korea's NMR and IMR fell significantly between 1993 and 2009 from 6.6 and 9.9 to 1.7 and 3.2, respectively. Common causes of infantile death in 2008 had decreased compared with those in 1996 such as other disorders originating in the perinatal period, congenital malformation of the heart, bacterial sepsis of newborns, disorders related to length of gestation and fetal growth, intra-uterine hypoxia, birth asphyxia. However, some other causes are on the increase, such as respiratory distress of newborn, other respiratory conditions originating in the perinatal period, other congenital malformation, diseases of the blood and blood-forming organs and certain disorders involving the immune mechanism. In this study, we provide basic data about changes of NMR and IMR and the causes of neonatal and infantile death from 1983 to 2009 in Korea.

  • We characterized the efficacy of an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) air-cleaner in reducing the concentration of Serratia marcescens in an enclosed space. We used an experimental room ($4.5{\times}3{\times}2.9\;m$) in which electrostatic air-cleaners were located. Two air-cleaners enhanced the equivalent ventilation rates in the chamber by about 3.3 air changes per hour (ACH) over the 2 ACH provided by the mechanical ventilation system. Natural die-off of the organisms provided an additional equivalent of 3 ACH, so that the total ventilation rate with the ESP air-ccleaners was 8.3 ACH. We also examined whether the ESP air-cleaners altered the deposition of Serratia marcescens aerosols on the experimental room surfaces. We did not find any significant differences in the number of colony forming units recovered from surfaces with and without the air-cleaners. We installed UV lights inside the ESPs and determined if UV light, in addition to electrical fields, increased the efficacy of the ESPs. The presence of UV light inside the ESP reduced S. marcescens aerosols by approximately 2 ACH. Finally, a box model indicates that the efficiency of the air-cleaner increases for both biological and nonbiological particles at ventilation rates of 0.2-1, which are typical for residential settings.

  • This paper presents the development of a virtual forging factory framework. The technologies of virtual reality and relational database had been integrated in the developed framework using Microsoft $Windows^{(R)}$ programming as the main technique so as to emulate a physical forging factory. The developed virtual forging factory consists of forging cells and a forging cell is comprised of forging machine, forging die, and forging operations forming a forging production line. The technology of virtual reality had been successfully adopted in the production simulation of manufacturing such as CNC and robotics. However, the application in virtual forging factory seems to have not been studied yet. Potential application of a virtual forging factory can be beneficial to (1) computer aided instruction, (2) shorten the learning curve of a novice, (3) remote diagnosis and monitoring when remote monitoring and control technology and signal inspection is considered, (4) improve adverse forging environment when remote forging technology is applied, and (5) virtual reality application.

  • The increasing demand in industry to produce rectangular cans at the reduction by the rectangular backward extrusion process involves better understanding of this process. In 2-D die deflection and dimensional variation of the component during extrusion, punch retraction, component injection and cooling was conducted using a coupled thermal-mechanical approach for the forward extrusion of aluminum alloy and low-carbon steel in tools of steel. Backward extrusion FE simulation and experimental simulation by physical modeling using wax as a model material have been performed. These simulations gave good results concerning the prediction of th flow modes and the corresponding surface expansions of the material occuring at the contact surface between the can and the punch. There prediction are the limits of the can height, depending on the reduction, the punch geometry, the workpiece material and the friction factor, in order to avoid the risk of damage caused by sticking of the workpiece material to the punch face. The influence of these different parameter on the distribution of the surface expansion along the inner can wall and bottom is already determined. This paper deals with the influence of the geometry changes of the forming tool and the work material in the rectangular backward using the 3-D finite element method.

  • The hydroformability of aluminum alloy sheets at elevated temperatures have been investigated in this study. It is necessary to analyze the variations of the mechanical properties that depend on the forming temperature and the heat conduction during warm hydroforming. Therefore, in this study a coupled simulation of plastic deformation and temperature distribution in the warm hydroforming process is performed and compared with experimental data. The multi-purpose code DEFORM-2D can handle this type of calculations but it takes high computation time if contact heat transfer between die, tube and pressure medium occurs. Experiments were conducted by high temperature tribometer(pin-on-disk) allowing measuring the friction coefficients of the aluminum alloys at several temperatures and these results are applied to the coupled simulation by which the optimal process parameters such as internal pressure and preset temperature on hydroformability can be determined. The comparison of the FE analysis with the experimental results has shown that hydroformability given by bulge height, and temperature distribution of the tube specimen make a little difference with the FE results but the trend predicted by simulation agrees well with experiments.

  • With the increased concerns of environmental issues, industries are paying more attention to lightweight metals. Because the high degree of springback is an obstacle to the widespread use of lightweight metals, many investigations have been conducted to reduce springback by increasing temperature. However, increasing the temperature of the whole die or the material is energy inefficient, since generally only a limited area of the material is deformed during sheet metal forming. As a solution to this problem, focused heating that only heats the area where plastic deformation occurs may be an alternative approach. In the current study, V-bending tests were conducted at various temperatures after the AZ31, Ti-GR2 sheets were locally heated using near-infrared (NIR) radiation in order to evaluate the effect of temperature on springback. The results of the experiment confirm that the NIR focused heating reduces the springback of AZ31, Ti-GR2 alloys with increasing temperature.
