  • Introduction: Possible etiologic factors associated with bone loss around implants after implantation are surgical trauma, occlusal overload, periimplantitis, presence of micro gap and the formation of biologic distances. Tarnow et al. observed that the crestal bone loss was greater when the distance between the implants was <3mm than when the implants were ${\geq}\;3mm$ apart. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different interimplant distance on marginal bone and crestal bone resorption in the beagle dogs. Materials and methods: The mandibular premolars of 5 dogs were extracted bilaterally. After 12 weeks of healing, each dog received 7 implants. On each side, implants were separated by 2mm (Group 1) and by 5mm (Group 2). After 16 weeks of healing, the dogs were sacrificed. Marginal bone loss was determined through linear measurements made between the implant-abutment junctions and the most coronal portions of the bone in contact with the implant surface. A line was drawn uniting the implant-abutment junctions of the adjacent implants, and a linear measurement was made at the midpoint in the direction of the most coronal peak of the interimplant bone crest to determine the crestal bone loss. Both of them was measured radiologically and histologically. Result and conclusion: In radiological analysis, the mean of marginal bone loss was $1.26{\pm}0.14mm$ for group 1 and $1.23{\pm}0.34mm$ for group 2, the mean of crestal bone loss was $1.10{\pm}0.14mm$ for group 1 and $1.02{\pm}0.30mm$ for group 2. The results were not statistically significant between 2 groups. In histological analysis, the mean of marginal bone loss was $1.63{\pm}0.48mm$ for group 1 and $1.62{\pm}0.50mm$ for group 2, the mean of crestal bone loss was $1.23{\pm}0.35mm$ for group 1 and $1.15{\pm}0.39mm$ for group 2. The differences were also not statistically significant. The clinical significance of this result is that the increase in the crestal bone loss results in the increase in the distance between the base of the interproximal contact of the crowns and the bone crest, and this determines if papilla will be present or absent between implants. Considering this fact, keeping up sufficient interimplant distance is important to minimize crestal bone loss.

  • The boundary films formed in sliding on steel surfaces were characterized using various lubricants. The mechanism of boundary film formation and loss was investigated over a range of temperature. The thickness of the boundary films was monitored in-situ by an ellipsometer, and the composition of the films was analyzed by XPS. The performance of the lubricants is closely associated with boundary film forming ability. In order to achieve high load carrying capacity, a boundary film must be formed on the surface. Sliding is necessary to form the films and some time is also required. As temperature increases, chemical reactivity increases the film formation rate, while the film removal rate increases due to thg decrease of durability of the boundary film material. There is a balance between these two competing mechanisms and this balance is reflected in the boundary film thickness.

  • The mechanism of failure of lubricated surfaces at high sliding speeds was investigated. Experiments were performed with the ball-on-flat and cylinder-on-flat geometries, using lubricants of four different chemical reactivities. Surface failure was found to not be predictable using the ratio, $\lambda$, of fluid film thickness to composite surface roughness except when chemically inert lubricants are used. Even then the influence of temperature rise on fluid film thickness does not adequately explain the low load carrying capacity of lubricants at high sliding speeds, which causes surface failure. The protective layers on sliding surfaces that form by chemical reaction with the lubricant were found to reduce the surface roughening and increase the load carrying capacity of surfaces to values of $\lambda$ as low as 0.03. Neither the surface roughening nor the formation of the protective layers have been incorporated into failure models for lubricated systems.

  • PST-series spcimens with stoichimetric and nonstoichimtric compositins were prepared and the effects of compositionl modification on phase formation and dielectric presponse were investigated. The phases formed on calcination were mainly perovskite and trace amount of phyrochlore(s), with an increase of the latter phase(s) as the composition became more ononstoichiometric. The sintered samples showed thermal hysteresis and diffuseness in phase transition with a small degree of frequency relaxation. Temperatures corresponding to maximum values of dielectric constant and loss were relatively insensitive to the composition change while the maximum values were very sensitive to that.

  • We discussed the thermal analysis for a recording media with the variation of the laser pulse duration, the laser power and the temperature distribution in order to optimize the Te-based antireflection structure from the computer calculations. In the case that the radial heat diffusion is negligible, we can calculate the maximum temperature of the recording layer at the center of the spot by the Simple Model. The temperature profile of the recording layer is obtained from the Numerical Model by considering the total specific heat and the latent heat. As a result, the effect of the heat sinking acting as a thermal loss for the hole formation could be minimized by introducing the pulse with the hole formation duration(.tau.) below the thermal time constant(.tau.$_{D}$) of a dielectric layer. These requirments can be satisfied by using the dielectric thickness of the 2nd ART(Anti-Reflection Trilayer) condition or the dielectric materials with a low thermal diffusivity.y.

  • We hypothesized that inflammation affects number and activity of osteoclasts (OCs) via enhancing autophagy. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced autophagy, osteoclastogenesis, and cytoplasmic reactive oxygen species (ROS) in bone marrow-derived macrophages that were pre-stimulated with receptor activator of nuclear $factor-{\kappa}B$ ligand. An autophagy inhibitor, 3-methyladenine (3-MA) decreased LPS-induced OC formation and bone resorption, indicating that autophagy is responsible for increasing number and activity of OCs upon LPS stimulus. Knockdown of autophagy-related protein 7 attenuated the effect of LPS on OC-specific genes, supporting a role of LPS as an autophagy inducer in OC. Removal of ROS decreased LPS-induced OC formation as well as autophagy. However, 3-MA did not affect LPS-induced ROS levels, suggesting that ROS act upstream of phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate 3-kinase in LPS-induced autophagy. Our results suggest the possible use of autophagy inhibitors targeting OCs to reduce inflammatory bone loss.

  • A very fine pattern formation process using double exposure is investigated, which can overcome the resolution limit of optical wafer stepper. The very fine pattern can be obtained by moving the edge profile of large pattern by means of moving the stepper stage. The simulation results show that the light transmittance decrease bellow 9%, and the contrast increase to 16.6% for the 0.3$\mu$m photoresist pattern exposeed by the double exposure using i-line wafer stepper. And the experimental results show that fine photoresist pattern as short as 0.2$\mu$m can be obtained without a loss of photoresist thickness. Also, it proves that the depth of focus for 0.3$\mu$m pattern is longer than $1.5\mu$m. And, the very fine negative photoresist pattern was formmed by using the double exposure technique and the image reversal process.

  • The effects of MgO on the resistance to corrosion and oxidation of Al2O3-SiC-C refractory have been in-vestigated. The resistance to oxidation was improved as the amount of MgO increased. The resistance to corrosion was enhanced until 2 wt% MgO content but degraded over that content. From the dependence of temperatuer on the oxidation resistance oxidation was suppressed by the microstructural densification caused by spinel formation over 1200~130$0^{\circ}C$and the formation MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 liguid-phase over 130$0^{\circ}C$ The weight loss of specimens containing MgO with various purity at range of 95 to 99% and par-ticle size of -0.045 mm to -0.074 mm was examined. The oxidation resistance was not changed signficantly with the particle size and purity of MgO powders.

  • The aging effects on the characteristics of the melt spun Cu based shape memory alloys have been investigated by the microhardness test, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. After aged for specific times, hardness of the ribbons began to increase and shape memory capacity diminished. At the initial stage of aging the austenitic transformation temperatures increased gradually, but at last became nearly constant: That is, the aging deteriorated the thermal stability. The increase in hardness was due to the formation of the $\gamma_2$ precipitates. The loss in the shape memory capacity was due to the decrement of solute atoms in the matrix by the formation of the $\gamma_2$ precipitates. In this study, it was confirmed that Mn is an effective element for Improving the thermal stability.

  • TSA(thaumasite sulfate attack) is one of the important and prevailing phenomena to damage concrete structures by sulfate attack. In the present study, the thaumasite ($CaSiO_3{\cdot}CaSO_3{\cdot}CaSO_4{\cdot}15H_2O$) has been observed by the authors and other researchers in concrete samples in laboratory or field. Microstructural and mechanical observations clearly confirm that the thaumasite formation is greatly associated with sulfate attack indicating mass loss, expansion and spalling in the sample. This study summarizes the results of observation carried out by the authors and researchers on TSA which thaumasite formation has been identified.
