  • This paper is to examine what implications the regionalism in Spain has for its national development during the last two centuries. Since the beginning of the nineteenth century the regionalism (including territorial nationalisms in periphery) has played a central role in the history of Spanish state-formation. On the one hand, a strong regional identity was related to a structural weakness affecting Spanish nation-building and accused of forging the separatist national movements in the Basque, Catatonia Galicia and so on. On the other hand, the regionalism has contributed to enforcing the Spanish national consciousness in complex and contradictory ways. Therefore, on the contrary to our common understandings of regionalism, the Spanish regionalism has both enforced and counteracted the Spanish nationalism. In the late 1970s after the collapse of Franco regime, the long history of the Spanish regionalism resulted in a state system based on the regional political decentralization.

  • In this study, multilayered rings with a large outer diameter have been developed using a hot ring rolling process. The ring rolling process has been analyzed by rigid plastic finite element analyses (FEA) using the AFDEX2D and AFDEX3D/HEXA/RING simulators, where the finite element meshes received severe plastic deformation are remeshed into a fine mesh-size using a dual-mesh system. According to the simulated results, the design variables of the multilayered rings were determined and real tests were conducted to check the validity of the simulation results. By adopting the hot ring rolling process, the input weight of raw materials was reduced by 40% against the conventional hot forging process and that the recovery rate was increased by 24%. The measurement of the averaged roundness was satisfied within 0.5 mm for both the inner and outer diameters. Moreover, the hot ring rolling processes yielded 1.49 Cpk for the outer-diameter and 0.84 Cpk 0.84 for the inner-diameter.

  • Once hot forgings for automotive parts such as wheel bearing flange to which cyclic asymmetric bending stress is continuously applied are produced, it is necessary to control their microstructure to obtain superior mechanical properties. It is however hard to control the microstructure uniformly because the strength is reduced as coarsening of ferrite grains. To investigate the microstructural alteration according to process variables during hot working, the variation of the ferrite grain size was studied by utilizing of the computer aided servo-hydraulic Gleeble tester which is hot deformation behavior reproduction equipment. In addition, the effect of the ferrite grain size of raw material on the austenite grain behavior of hot forgings was also examined. The rolling contact fatigue resistance of the induction hardened SAE 1055 steel was compared with the occasion of the same condition of SAE52100 bearing steel. As a result, it was confirmed that the ferrite grain sizes of the forgings depend on the heating temperature and cooling start temperature during hot forging and cooling processes. The induction hardened SAE1055 steel showed a superior rolling contact fatigue resistance to the induction hardened SAE52100 steel. The reason is that SAE1055 steel is freer from the material defect such as segregation than the comparative steel.

  • In a recent investigation, the formation of bainite phase in direct-quenched low carbon non heat-treated steel was reported. In this study the effects of bainite phase on the mechanical properties of direct-quenched microalloying steels were investigated. By isothermal transformation at $480^{\circ}C$ for 7 sec., volume fraction of bainite lath was 15~20%, and the UTS and impact energy were increased. In this case $B_{ll}$ and $B_{lll}$ type bainite was observed and the fractography of impact test specimen showed a ductile fracture tendency. Isothermal transformation for 100sec., yielded 30% volume fraction of granular bainite and the mechanical properties were decreased. The f ractography of impact test specimen showed a brittle fracture tendency. The addition of Mo was more effective than B for improving impact energy because amounts of boron aditions were restricted to considerably lower levels, typically 10~ 30ppm. From this study, it is predicted that 15~20% volume fraction of lath bainite on the direct quenching process is procduced by addition of Mo up to 1.2wt. % and controlling the finish forging proc¬ess at $1000^{\circ}C$ and using oil as direct quenching media. This will improve mechanical properties of the direct- quenched steel.

  • Extruded Mg-Bi binary alloys are known to have an undesirable bimodal grain structure containing a large amount of coarse unrecrystallized grains. Accordingly, to improve the microstructural homogeneity of extruded Mg-Bi alloys, it is necessary to promote the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) behavior during hot extrusion. An effective way to promote DRX is an increase in nucleation sites for DRX through a pre-deformation process before extrusion, such as cold pre-forging and hot pre-compression. However, the application of these pre-deformation processes increases the cost of final extruded Mg products because of an increase in energy consumption and decrease in productivity. Therefore, a low-cost new continuous process with high productivity is required to improve the microstructural homogeneity and mechanical properties of extruded Mg alloys without a drastic increase in the entire process cost. This study proposes a new extrusion method using an extrusion billet with a truncated cone shape (i.e., tapered billet) instead of a conventional extrusion billet with a cylindrical shape. When the hot extrusion of a Mg-5Bi alloy is conducted using the tapered billet, the DRX behavior during extrusion is considerably promoted. The DRX fraction and average grain size of the extruded alloy significantly increase and decrease from 65% to 91% and from 225 ㎛ to 49 ㎛, respectively. Consequently, the extruded Mg-5Bi alloy fabricated using the tapered billet has a finer homogeneous grain structure and higher tensile elongation than the extruded counterpart fabricated using the cylindrical billet.

  • In this study, IF steel, which has a body-centered cubic (BCC) crystal structure, was fabricated as a 25 mm-long cube, and then processed for one cycle without intermediate heat treatment by applying MADF Ver.1 and Ver.2 processes. MADF processing was performed with graphite lubrication for each pass at room temperature. The development of the microstructure and texture was analyzed and compared by the location of the specimen using EBSD measurements of the IF steel. Vickers hardness test and miniature tensile test were also performed to analyze the mechanical properties. The coarse grain size of 742.6 ㎛ of the as-received IF steel was refined to a grain size of 53.0 ㎛ after one cycle of MADF Ver.1 processing and 27.0 ㎛ after MADF Ver.2 processing. Vicker's hardness of the as-received IF steel at 94 Hv was increased to 185.6 Hv and 191.2 Hv after one cycle of MADF Ver.1 and Ver.2 processing, respectively.

  • Few studies of large blooms over 700 mm thick among those used for the forging of raw materials have been reported. The cooling rate difference between the surface and the center of a large bloom is large, and the degradation of the mechanical properties is likely in cases involving excessively coarse precipitates resulted from the slow cooling rate of a large bloom after casting. Therefore, a schematic investigation of the growth behaviors of precipitates while varying their locations in blooms is necessary. The dissolution behaviors of precipitates were investigated by simulating a reheating process during which the bloom is heated to a high temperature. The segregation behavior of the as-cast large bloom was also investigated. Reheating specimens were obtained after an isothermal heat treatment at $1150^{\circ}C$ with various holding times to simulate the reheating process, with the samples undergoing a subsequent water quenching step. The precipitates were extracted using an electrolytic extractor and a particle size analysis was conducted with the aid of SEM, EDS, and TEM. In the present work, Al oxide, MnS and Nb carbide were mainly observed.

  • Yatsushiro Shrine on the island of Kamishima located in Ise Bay, Japan, contains many cultural artifacts with ancient mirrors in significant numbers. Also included among the artifacts are horse gags and reins that are clearly of the same lineage as the horse harnesses from the unified Shilla era and Goryeo era in Korean history. Type classification and position establishment were carried out on the horse reins kept in the Yatsushiro shrine, including items such as those mentioned previously. Type A horse harness can be classified into 3 types. Based on this classification scheme, the harness type in the Yatsushiro shrine was found to belong to the most recent period. The blacksmith workshop that made the harness was producing iron wares and bronze wares, and it possessed metal forging and metal casting technologies. Note, however, that it was primarily a workshop where iron wares were made. The parts that were visible from the outside when the harness was attached were made from composite bronze, and the reins and bridle linkage were made from iron. Such integration of bronze ware production techniques and iron ware production techniques was an attempt at enhancing the practicality and embellishments on the harness.

  • To compare and analyze technical system related to manufacturing of ironware during the period of the Three Kingdoms, an analysis was conducted on the minute system of metalwork, as study objects, of the remains of the Mt. Wolpyeong fortress wall in Daejeon in the period of capital during the era of the Three Kingdoms in the 5th century, the Sanwol-ri remains in the 6th century in Gunsan and the remains of ironware excavated from the great ancient tomb of Hwangnam of the Silla dynasty in the 5th century. The result of analysis shows that in the most of the casting products, the minute system of white cast iron were contained. While the iron part of decarbonization was in the system by casting as white cast iron in the central part, on the surface layer it was turned out that comparatively uniform 100% pearlite system of about 1~2mm degree was existing. The part of pearlite on the surface layer was caused by decarbonization, which appears in all the parts of blade front end and handle. Therefore, it was found that the iron part of decarbonization was manufactured by casting, and then was processed at the high temperature by decarbonization. For the products of forging, after processing the products on the basis of pure iron for materials, they manufactured the ironware that raises the strength by carbonizing that keeps carbon infiltrated on the necessary part, by the method of black smith welding that add pure iron to steel, or by varying the method of heat processing onto the part required of strength. Though limited, we could understand that the technical systems for manufacturing skill of ironware in the areas of Baekje and Silla were different each other. In the technical system for Hwangnam great ancient tomb in the Silla area, it is found that they had raised the strength on the necessary part by applying the steelmaking method of carbonizing in the last stage of production of products, in the meantime in Baekje area, it appears that they had produced steel in advance in the first stage of production of the products, and used the produced steel only to the necessary part.
