  • Streptomyces spp. isolated from turfgrass rhizosphere and tested for their response to large-patch control fungicides. The tested fungicides were actually used in golf course or turfgrass cultivation to prevent large-patch disease. Tolerance to 3 triazole group of the strains was the highest to the PR fungicide, and following the SR fungicide, whereas the isolated strains were no tolerance to HR fungicide. Tolerances to three kind of Strobilurin group were similar for the all of the tested Streptomyces spp.. Growth and sporulation of the all strain was normal in CB and AP fungicide treatments. However no spore formulated in double concentration. Strains, tolerance to acetanilide fungicides, appeared that KT fungicide tolerance was higher than MK fungicide. The selected strains showed strong tolerance against AT fungicide but have no tolerance to ATR fungicides. In conclusion, the bacterial strains showed tolerance against 1 carbamate, 1 organophosphate and 1 cyanopyrrole group, while have no tolerance against two mixture formulations (1 Quinone + Strobilurin and 1 Imidazole + Triazole).

  • An ecological niche is defined as the specific role of a species influenced by time, space, and other resources. By investigating overlaps between ecological niches of different species, we could estimate the degrees of interspecific competition. Such studies often use geographic information systems (GIS) to discover niche overlaps between species. In this study, we used GIS to estimate the spatial niches of two Korean frog species(Pelophylax nigromaculatus and P. chosenicus). This enabled us to predict their geographic distributions in order to identify their coexistence regions and distribution patterns. The results confirmed that altitude was an important variable for predicting their distribution, with a correlation with their climatic range. Spatial distributions of the two frog species were highly overlapped, as the distribution range for P. nigromaculatus included most of the range of P. chosenicus, showing a sympatric distribution pattern. Within the coexisting regions, however, the presence sites for the two species did not overlap, implying weak competition. To confirm the principal factors influencing their competitive relationship and reasons for their sympatric distribution pattern, we need more detailed in-depth studies on the diverse environmental variables within the regions where the two species coexist. By doing so, we would be able to identify various mechanisms for avoiding competition in sympatric frog species.

  • This research aims to identify the possibility of developing A horizon resources that can be used for construction and civil engineering work. As such, the utility of A horizon resources was examined by establishing planting ground through a mixture of soil layers and by analyzing the growth and development of Pinus densiflora. The physicochemical and physical properties of the soil were as follows: the A horizon was sandy clay loam, B horizon was sandy loam, and the mixture of two layers appeared as sandy loam, which was identical to the B horizon. The experimental groups did not show any significant difference in their physical properties of porosity and degree of water-stable aggregates. With regards to chemical properties, the A horizon as well as the mixture of A and B horizon showed acidity while the B horizon showed alkalinity. The figures of organic matter, total nitrogen, available phosphate, and replaceable potassium were greater as the A horizon content increased, whereas the figures of replaceable calcium, replaceable magnesium, and conductivity increased as the A horizon content decreased. As a result of the growth and development of Pinus densiflora in each planting ground, the final survival rates were all above 100%. However, the tree height and the rate of growth for the diameter of root were higher in the order of A horizon > A horizon + B horizon > B horizon, indicating that the increased A horizon content is related to the growth and development of Pinus densiflora. The treatment of soil with improvement agents, used to recover the functions of in-situ soil showing poor growth and development, did not have a clear impact on the soil texture and porosity. However, the degree of water-stable aggregates increased significantly when using O horizon as the soil improvement agent among the types of in-situ soil. In contrast, all items related to the chemical properties showed significant differences following the treatment by soil improvement agents. The survival rate according to the treatment of soil improvement agents for the growth and development of Pinus densiflora was higher in the order of organic horizon = no treatment > compound fertilizer > organic fertilizer + compound fertilizer > organic fertilizer; this result was statistically significant with a marginal significance value of the log-rank test(p < 0.05).

  • As the risk of landslide is recently increasing due to the typhoons and localized heavy rains, effective techniques for the landslide damage detection are required to support the establishment of the recovery planning. This study describes the analysis of landslide-damaged areas using ISODATA(Iterative Self-Organizing Data Analysis Technique Algorithm) with Sentinel-2 image, regarding the case of Gokseong in August 7, 2020. A total of 4.75 ha of landslide-damaged areas was detected from the Sentinel-2 image using spectral characteristics of red, NIR(Near Infrared), and SWIR(Shortwave Infrared) bands. We made sure that the satellite remote sensing is an effective method to detect the landslide-damaged areas and support the establishment of the recovery planning, followed by the field surveys that require a lot of manpower and time. Also, this study can be used as a reference for the landslide management for the CAS500-1/2(Compact Advanced Satellite) scheduled to launch in 2021 and the Korean Medium Satellite for Agriculture and Forestry scheduled to launch in 2024.

  • This study investigated the ground displacement occurring in a slope below a waste-rock dumping site and estimated the likelihood of a disaster due to a landslide. To start with, photogrammetry was conducted by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to investigate the size and extent of the ground displacement. From April 2019 to July 2020, the average error rate of the five UAV surveys was 0.011-0.034 m, and an elevation change of 2.97 m occurred due to the movement of the soil layer. Only some areas of the slope showedelevation change, and this was believed to be due to thegroundwater generated during rainfall rather than the effect of the waste-rock load at the top. Sensitivity analysis for LS-RAPID simulation was performed, and the simulation results were compared and analyzed by applying a digital elevation model (DEM) and a digital surface model (DSM)as terrain data with 10 m, 5 m, and 4 m grids. When data with high spatial resolution were used, the extent of the sedimentation of landslide material tended to be excessively expanded in the DEM. In contrast, in the result of applying a DSM, which reflects the topography in detail, the diffusion range was not significantly affected even when the spatial resolution was changed, and the sedimentation behavior according to the river shape could be accurately expressed. As a result, it was concluded that applying a DSM rather than a DEM does not significantly expand the sedimentation range, and results that reflect the site situation well can be obtained.

  • For data such as rainfall and soil moisture, it is important to obtain the values of all points required as geostatistical data. Spatial interpolation is generally performed in this process, and commercial software such as ArcGIS is often used. However, commercial software has fatal drawbacks due to its high expertise and cost. In this study, R, an open source-based environment with ArcGIS, a commercial software, was used to compare the differences according to the processing environment when performing spatial interpolation. The data for spatial interpolation was weather forecast data calculated through Land-Atmosphere Modeling Package (LAMP)-WRF model, and soil moisture data calculated for each cumulative rainfall scenario. There was no difference in the output value in the two environments, but there was a difference in user interface and calculation time. The results of spatial interpolation work in the test bed showed that the average time required for R was 5 hours and 1 minute, and for ArcGIS, the average time required was 4 hours and 40 minutes, respectively, showing a difference of 7.5%. The results of this study are meaningful in that researchers can derive the same results in a commercial software environment and an open source-based environment, and can choose according to the researcher's environment and level.

  • It is a well known fact that baseflow discharge of rainfall runoff impacts on water quality of surface water significantly. In this paper, impacts of nitrate discharged as base flow on stream water quality were studied by using a software, PULSE from USGS to calculate monthly ground water discharge from hydrograph. We used water quality and flow rate data for Ghapcehon2 site in Daejeon city for year 2005 as well as ground water quality data in the watershed acquired from government agencies. Agricultural and forestry land use are dominant for upstream of Ghapcheon2 in the watershed. Base flow contributes about 85~95% of stream flows during spring and fall while 25~38% of stream flow was induced by base flow during summer and winter. Monthly nitrate loading discharged as base flow for Ghapcheon2 was estimated by using averaged nitrate concentration of groundwater in the watershed. Nitrate loading induced by base flow at Ghapcheon2 was estimated as 5.4 ton of $NO_{3}{^-}-N/km^{2}$, which is about 60% of nitrate loading of surface water, 9.2 ton of $NO_{3}{^-}-N/km^{2}$. Seasonal variation of nitrate concentration of base flow was estimated by dividing monthly nitrate loading by monthly base flow discharge. Nitrate concentration of groundwater was increasing from rainy season. From this study, it can be understood that ground water quality monitoring is important for the proper manage of surface water quality.

  • North Korea has experienced floods and sediment-related disasters annually since the 1970s due to deforestation. It is of paramount importance that technologies and trends related to forest restoration and soil erosion control engineering be properly understood in a bid to reduce damage from sediment-related disasters in North Korea, and to effect national territorial management following unification. This paper presents a literature review and bibliometric analysis including 146 related articles published in North Korea. First, we analyzed the textual characteristics of the articles. We then employed the VOSviewer software package to classify the research topic and analyzed this topic based on the time change. The results showed that articles on the topic have consistently increased since the 1990s. In addition, research related to soil erosion control engineering has been classified into four subjects in North Korea: (i) assessment of hazard area on soil erosion and soil loss, sediment related-disasters; (ii) hydraulic and hydrologic understanding of forests; (iii) reasonable construction of soil erosion control structures; and (iv) effects and management plan of soil erosion control works. The proportion of research related to the (ii) hydraulic and hydrologic understanding of forests had been significant during the reign of Kim Ilsung. However, the proportion of research related to the (i) assessment of hazard area on soil erosion and soil loss, sediment-related disasters, increased during the reign of Kim Jongil and Kim Jongun. Using these results, our analysis indicated that an interest in and need for soil erosion control engineering in North Korea has continually increased. The results of this study are expected to serve as a basis for preparing forestry cooperation between North and South Korea, and to serve as essential data for better understanding soil erosion control engineering in North Korea.

  • Deposition of atmospheric N that is depleted in $^{15}N$ has shown to decrease N isotope ratio ($^{15}N/^{14}N$,expressed as ${\delta}^{15}N$) of forest samples such as tree rings, foliage, and total soil-N. However, its effect on ${\delta}^{15}N$ of mineral soil-N which is biologically active N pool has never been tested. In this study, ${\delta}^{15}N$ of mineral N($NH{_4}^+$ and $NO_3{^-}$) in forest soils from organic and two depths of mineral soil layers (0 to 20 cm and 20 to 40cm depth) of Pinus densiflora stands located at two distinct areas (rural and industrial areas) in southern Korea was analyzed to investigate if there is any difference in ${\delta}^{15}N$ of mineral N between these areas. We also evaluated potential N loss of the study sites using ${\delta}^{15}N$ of mineral N. Across the soil layers, the ${\delta}^{15}N$ of $NH{_4}^+$ ranged from +8.9 to +24.8‰ in the rural area and from +4.4 to +13.8‰ in the industrial area. Soils from organic layer (+4.4‰) and mineral layer between 0 and 20 cm (+13.8‰) of industrial area showed significantly lower ${\delta}^{15}N$ of $NH{_4}^+$ than those of rural area (+8.9 and +24.3‰, respectively), probably indicating the greater contribution of $^{15}N$-depleted $NH{_4}^+$ from atmospheric deposition to forest in the industrial area than in the rural area. Meanwhile, ${\delta}^{15}N$ of $NO_3{^-}$ was not different between the rural and industrial areas, probably because ${\delta}^{15}N$ of $NO_3{^-}$ is more likely to be altered by the N loss that causes $^{15}N$ enrichment of the remaining soil N pool. Compared with the ${\delta}^{15}N$ of soil mineral N reported by other studies (from -10.9 to +15.6‰ for $NH{_4}^+$ and -14.8 to +5.6‰ for $NO_3{^-}$), the ${\delta}^{15}N$ observed in our study was substantially high, suggesting that the study sites are more subject to the N loss. It was concluded that $NH{_4}^+$ rather than $NO_3{^-}$ can conserve the ${\delta}^{15}N$ signature of atmospheric N deposition in forest ecosystems.

  • The purpose of this study was to broaden our knowledge on the productivity and costs of felling operation in three different harvesting methods(whole tree, tree-length and cut-to-length). Felling was conducted in three different harvesting methods with two workers who have different work experiences. Worker A and B have had felling experiences for about 5 years and 15 years, respectively. Felling productivity in whole tree method was $10.3m^3/SMH$ for worker A and $12.7m^3/SMH$ for worker B. Felling costs for worker A and B were $2,066won/m^3$ and $2,201won/m^3$, respectively. Although felling productivity of worker B in whole tree method was higher than worker A, felling costs of worker A were similar to worker B because the wage of worker B was more expensive than the wage of worker A (p>0.05). In tree-length method, felling cost of worker B were cheaper than that of worker A. Felling productivity and cost in tree-length method were $2.2m^3/SMH$ and $9,890won/m^3$ for worker A and $3.3m^3/SMH$ and $8,459won/m^3$ for worker B, respectively (p<0.05). In cut-to-length method, felling productivity and cost were $2.3m^3/SMH$ and $9,584won/m^3$ for worker A and $3.0m^3/SMH$ and $9,395won/m^3$ for worker B, respectively. Felling productivity of worker B was higher than that of worker A(p>0.05). Our preliminary results found that harvesting methods and worker's experiences highly affect on the productivity and costs of felling operations. These results should be useful for forest managers when planning cost-effective harvesting operations.
