We are constantly hearing about the seriousness of food shortages in North Korea through various media reports. Recently, the severity of the problem has increased, and international organizations and relief organizations have become increasingly concerned. Due to the shortage of food and firewood, residents illegally cut trees in the mountains and, as a result, North Korea has become the third fastest-growing area of forest degradation in Asia. However, since North Korea cannot directly measure the extent of forest degradation, remote sensing techniques using satellite imagery have to be applied. The purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics of forest change in North Korea, in order to understand the severity of the forest degradation problem. For this purpose, Landsat 5 TM and Landsat 8 OLI TIRS satellite images were acquired and classified. As a result, it was found that the forests have turned into wilderness in the Nampo City and Pyongyang municipalities, while the wasteland has changed into forests in the north of Yanggangdo. In addition, the total forested area of the whole region decreased by $4,166.22km^2$, the residential area decreased by $2,017.03km^2$, and the amount of agricultural land increased by $6,625.74km^2$, which is similar to the amount of forested area lost, although the difference in the overall area of the forests between 2017 and 2006 was small.
The relationship between land uses and water quality was investigated at Kyong-an Stream. Some 70% of this watershed was forested area, half of which was comprised of Pinus densilflora community. Concentrations of $NH_4^{+},\;NO_3^{-},\;NO_2^{-}, total nitrogen, $Cl^{-},\;PO_4^{3-}$, DO, and BOD increased gradually from upstream to downstream, whereas heavy metals did not have such tendancy with the exception of a few sites. Urban area was significantly correlated with hardness and chloride concentration. Relationship among phosphate concentration(P), cultivated field area(F), and stream length(S) in each basin was P = 1.7912 F/S+0.0103. the concentration of $NH_4^{+}$ was positively correlated with the population size and cow density within the catchment. The effect of urban area(U) and stream length of the pH(pH) was represented by pH = -4.7344 U/S+6.52. It can be concluded that the control of nonpoint source pollution as well as point source pollution is one of the important problems of water quality management, especially geological properties must be considered for sustainable development.
In many very high density cities in Asia in which there is limited area to expand, growth is forced upward as well as outward. Densely packed detached houses and low-rise buildings are replaced by lower density high-rises, leaving open spaces between high-rise buildings. Through this process, areas that formerly did not have much green space gain valuable green spaces, and new ecological corridors and patches are created. In this study, the demographic and housing-type changes of Wonju City were delineated using land use maps, aerial images, census data, and other administrative data. Green area changes were calculated using land cover data derived from multi-year Landsat TM satellite imagery. The values were then compared against demographic and housing-type changes for each administrative unit. The overall results showed a decrease of forested area in the city and an increase of developed area. Urban sprawl was clearly visible in many of the suburban areas. However, as expected, we also detected areas in which greenness did not decrease when the population greatly increased. These areas were characterized by residential building complexes of ten or more stories. If an equal number of housing units had been built as detached houses, these areas would not have kept as much green space. Our research result showed that high-density and high-rise residential structures can offer an alternative means to protect or create urban green spaces in high-density urban environments.
This study was conducted to examine the effects of trampling on the changes in soil and vegetation around the trails. The study areas were established both on the trails and in the forested areas located in Ui and Jeongnung valleys at Pukhansan National Park. Soil core sampling, measurements of vegetations and counts of persons visited per hour were done during the period from April 6 to October 9, 1986. The physical properties of soils became better with increasing distances from the trail, and the best conditions were observed in the forested areas. The differences were not significant among the zones within the trailside. More number of individuals and basal area (or coverage) in woody plants were observed in the forested areas than at trailsides. For the herb layer, however, more number of individuals and coverage were shown at the trailside. In the Ui valley, the quantitative measures of herbaceous plants decreased as the bulk density and penetration resistance increased. In the Jeongnung valley, however, only bulk density was negatively related to the quantitative measures. The fact that there were poor relations between soil factors and quantitative measures of herbaceous plants in Jeongnung valley might be influenced by other factors rather than soil compaction. Thus, more research would be needed to understand the critical factors affecting the vegetational changes in recreation areas.
This study was to investigate the establish situation of coastal disaster prevention forest for future-oriented management and establishment method of stands. As a result, the area of coastal disaster prevention forest was about 1,479ha in Korea. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare the thining regime for area of coastal disaster prevention forest and make a management method for fallen poor disaster prevention function of coastal forests. In addition, more positive counterplan would be necessary to conclude the protection against this disasters because the damage from coastal erosion or pine wilt disease were increased partly in some area.
The endangered species of Cyathea spinulosa (tree ferns) are among the least concerned ferns of Nepal that bring threats to them and their habitat. A way to reduce such threats is by maintaining a database of species' whereabouts and generating a scientific understanding the habitat preferences. This will eventually help in the formulation of conservation plans for the species. This research aimed to characterize the suitable habitat of C. spinulosa by enumerating the location of species in the Panchase Forests of central Nepal. The statistical index method was applied to relate the occurrence locations of species with various environmental factors for the development of indices. The suitable habitat of C. spinulosa (more and most suitable categories) covered 119 km2 and accounted for 43% of the total area studied. 74.4% of occurrence locations of C. spinulosa were recorded from these habitats. The habitat characteristics suitable for C. spinulosa were: proximity to streams (high moisture), land covered by forested area (shady area), mid-elevations of hills about 1,000 m to 2,000 m (sub-tropical climate), slope gradient of 20° to 40° (steep slopes), and northern to eastern aspects. These habitat characteristics could be considered for in-situ protection of tree ferns and designating the conservation plots.
To designate rural landscape spatially, land use and topographic features for 383 of "Ri"s or "Dong", which is a basic administrative unit in Korea, were analyzed using GIS application. We have categorized rural landscape into three types such as agricultural, natural and urban landscape by land use. On the basis of spatial landscape pattern, rural area could be classified into 6 groups of Mountainous area (MA), Mountainous village area (MV), Developing mountainous village area (DM), Plain agricultural area (PA), Developing plain village area (DP) and Urbanized area (UA) according to the ratios of land for agricultural and urban use as the criteria. In MA, the ratio of upland area including orchard was slightly larger than that of paddy, while that of paddy was about 1.5 times larger than upland in other groups. Forested area was distributed more than two-thirds among natural landscape area in MA, MV and DM. In plain types (PA and DP), the ratio of irrigated paddy was extremely larger than partially irrigated paddy and the ratio of water body area among the natural landscape area was two times as large as that of forested area. The ratio of land for industrial and livestock facilities among urban landscape area were 20% or more in MV, DM and DP, and it means that these facilities are mainly distributed in the developing ru ral area where residents and industry are closely related each other. According to the relative ratio of sloped land of 6 categorized areas, the MA area have lots of land with E and F slopes and MV and DM have all grades of sloped land evenly distributed in relative to other types of rural landscape. It has been showed that PA, DP and UA occupied more than two-thirds of land with A or B slope. In case of the analysis of topological distribution in 6 types of rural landscape, there were overwhelmingly lager highland areas in MA. Conclusively, we have confirmed that 6 types of rural landscape classified by land use pattern in 3 categorized areas such as agricultural, natural and urban landscape area would be useful for the management of rural area. For development of sustainable agriculture and the preservation of rural amenity, proper management ways should be properly applied according to rural landscape patterns.
Although there have been wide range of studies to characterize forest stands based upon spectral information of satellite image, it was not fully understood the texture information of forest stand using high resolution data. The objective of this study is to evaluate several texture measures for characterizing forest stand structure, such as species composition, diameter at breast height(DBH), stand density, and age. High resolution IKONOS satellite imagery data were acquired in August 200 lover the forested area near Ulsan, Korea. Primary forest types were plantation pine, mixed forest, and natural deciduous forest of stand age ranging from 10 to 50 years old. Several GLCM-based texture measures were compared with forest stand characteristics. In overall, a texture measure (contrast) calculated using red band were better to differentiate species and age group than other texture measures and near infrared bands.
Yangyang Gangwon-do has begun the clearing of upland forested areas for development. This process has caused great damage from natural hazards such as landslides and flooding for many years. Moreover, proper hazard prevention strategies have not Yet been prepared. To provide useful information for developing hazard prevention strategies this study attempted to detect areas vulnerable to flooding in Yangyang using data such as topology, meteorology, history, land use, soil, hydrology, and society. It was found that roughly 30% of the study area was vulnerable to flooding. Also it was discovered that where the vulnerability index was high, there was increased amounts of flooding. The most vulnerable areas were where forests were cut and near livers. In addition, areas where frequent hazard events were reported had a high index of vulnerability. The results of this study will provide useful information in developing hazard prevention strategies.
This study proved if the high resolution satellite imagery of IKONOS is suitable for preparing digital forest cover map. Three methods, the pixel based classification with maximum likelihood (PML), the segment based classification with majority principle(SMP), and the segment based classification with maximum likelihood(SML), were applied to classify and delimitate forest cover of IKONOS imagery taken in May 2000 in a forested area in the central Korea. The segment-based classification was more suitable for classifying and deliminating forest cover in Korea using IKONOS imagery. The digital forest cover map in which each class is delimitated in the form of a polygon can be prepared on the basis of the segment-based classification.
