Fourteen dictyostelids(12 species of genus Dictyostelium. 2 species of genus Polysphonylium) oc-curred in Mt. Chiri Korea. Soils samples were collected from the nine sites. In the broadleaved-deciduous forests and conifers, common species of cellular slime molds are Dictyostelium mucoroides, and D. brefeldianum. Only two species are above 30 in importance value and above 50% in presence. Dominant species in the broadleaved-deciduous forests is D. mecoroides wheras in the conifer forests is D. brefeldianum which was not common until now in Korea, found in the low elevation either. In addition, Five cellular slime molds occured in the Miscanthus sinensis community: 4 species of genus Dictyostelium and 1 species of genus Polysphonylium. Dominant species is D. purpureum. Importance value is very high, 85. This Result is exceptively unusual. It dind't occur in the other sites. Correlation between the altitudes and the occurrence and distribution of dictyostelids was not accurate. Merely dominant species were different according to forest types and organic matter contents in soil. Cellular slime molds have different favorite forest types. And the growth and germination are dependent on the soil enviroryrnental conditions and soil quility. Key words:Dictyostelids, Mt. Chiri D. mecoroides, D. brefeldianum. D. purpureum. Soil quility, Favorite forest type, Soil environmental condition.
The organic carbon (OC) distribution of Pinus densiflora forest in Songgye valley at Mt. Worak National Park were studied as a part of the National Long-Term Ecological Research in Korea. In order to investigate the OC distribution, OC in plant biomass, litterfall, litter layer on forest floor, and soil were estimated. The density of P. densiflora forest was 1,300 trees/ha, average DBH was $15.2{\pm}6.17\;cm$ and average tree height was $10.7{\pm}2.56\;m$. The shrub layer was dominated by shrubby Quercus variabilis, Fraxinus sieboldiana and lndigofera kirilowii with low frequency, and herb layer was dominated by Pteridium aquilinum and Miscanthus sinensis. Total amount of OC stored in this pine forest was 142.78 ton C/ha. Organic carbon stored in soil and plant biomass accounted for 59.2% and 37.8%, respectively. Amount of OC distributed in trees, shrubs, herbs and litter layer in this pine forest was 51.79, 2.03, 0.12 and 4.29 ton C/ha, respectively. Amount of OC returned to forest floor via litterfall was $1.50\;ton\;C\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$. Soil organic carbon (SOC) decreased along the soil depth. Total amount of SOC within 50cm soil depth was $84.55\;ton\;C\;ha^{-1}\;50\;cm-depth^{-1}$.
Investigation of nutrient movement in soil and soil water is necessary to clarify water purification functions and nutrient circulation within a forest ecosystem. In this study, seasonal changes in the nutrient content of soil and soil water was investigated in Korean white pine(Pinus koraiensis) and Japanese larch(Larix leptolepis) forest applied urea ($150kg\;ha^{-1}$). Soil pH was decreased rapidly in Japanese larch plot for a long period. On the other hand, soil pH was increased slightly in Korean white pine plot. T-C and T-N content were increased in both plots. In Japanes larch plot, exchangeable Ca and Mg contents were decreased remarkably than those in korean white pine plot while exchangeable K was increased rapidly after application. The effect of urea application on exchangeable K was not obvious compared to other cations. The pH, Ca, $NH_4-N$, $NO_3-N$, $SO_4-S$ and Cl concentrations in the sampled soil water at surface soil were increased only temporarily after fertilization, with the only exception of the decrease in pH of the soil water in Japanese larch plot. On the other hand, the peak value of K, Mg concentrations in the soil water was shown between 2 and 5 months after fertilization. The concentrations of Ca, $NO_3-N$, $SO_4-S$ and Cl returned to the values found before fertilization after about 1 month. Those of K, Mg, and $NO_3-N$ after 6-12 months.

$N_2O$ and $CH_4$, Greenhouse gas emission, Forest soil, Closed chamber technique, Soil uptake $N_2O$ and $CH_4$ are important greenhouse gases (GHG) along with $CO_2$ influencing greatly on climate change. Their soil emission rates are highly affected by bio-geo-chemical processes in C and N through the land-atmosphere interface. The forest ecosystems are generally considered to be net emission for $N_2O$; however, net sinks for $CH_4$ by soil uptake. Soil $N_2O$ and $CH_4$ emissions were measured at Mt. Taewha in Gwangju, Kyeonggi, Korea. Closed chamber technique was used for surface gas emissions from forest soil during period from May to October 2012. Gas emission measurement was conducted mostly on daytime (from 09:00 to 18:00 LST) during field experiment period (total 25 days). The gas samples collected from chamber for $N_2O$ and $CH_4$ were analyzed by gas chromatography. Soil parameters were also measured at the sampling plot. GHG averages emissions during the experimental period were $3.11{\pm}16.26{\mu}g m^{-2}hr^{-1}$ for $N_2O$, $-1.36{\pm}11.3{\mu}gm^{-2}hr^{-1}$ for $CH_4$, respectively. The results indicated that forest soil acted as a source of $N_2O$, while it acted like a sink of $CH_4$ on average. On monthly base, means of $N_2O$ and $CH_4$ flux during May (spring) were $8.38{\pm}48.7{\mu}gm^{-2}hr^{-1}$, and $-3.21{\pm}31.39{\mu}gm^{-2}hr^{-1}$, respectively. During August (summer) both GHG emissions were found to be positive (averages of $2.45{\pm}20.11{\mu}gm^{-2}hr^{-1}$ for $N_2O$ and $1.36{\pm}9.09{\mu}gm^{-2}hr^{-1}$ for $CH_4$); which they were generally released from soil. During September (fall) $N_2O$ and $CH_4$ soil uptakes were observed and their means were $-1.35{\pm}12.78{\mu}gm^{-2}hr^{-1}$ and $-2.56{\pm}11.73{\mu}gm^{-2}hr^{-1}$, respectively. $N_2O$ emission was relatively higher in spring rather than other seasons. This could be due to dry soil condition during spring experimental period. It seems that soil moisture and temperature mostly influence gas production and consumption, and then emission rate in subsoil environment. Other soil parameters like soil pH and chemical composition were also discussed with respect to GHG emissions.

Soil moisture is critical for understanding the spatial-temporal variability of hydrologic processes. The distributions of soil moisture have been explored along transect line in hillslope hydrology. In this study, we measured several soil moistures along transect lines during ten-month period at a hillslope located the Cheong-mi catchment. The soil moisture properties were expressed by simple statistical methods (average, standard deviation, and recession slope) and analyzed in terms of soil depths and transects from the seasonal context. Supplementary studies were also performed about the effect of location, topography and soil texture to the soil moisture responses. The spatial distributions of average soil moisture at deep soil layer were distinguished from those at near surface due to the possibility of expected factors such as subsurface lateral flow from upslope, preferential flow and existence of bedrock. The soil moistures in combined line affected from significant contribution of upper transect line were relatively higher(wetter), low variability compared to those in other transect lines and seemed to be under stabilization process. There are confirmed heterogeneity of soil moisture variation related with preferential flow and significant influence of soil texture for soil moisture properties in upslope.
The Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) has been widely used to predict long-term soil loss by incorporating several erosion factors, such as rainfall, soil, topography, and vegetation. This study is aimed to introduce the LISLE within geographic information system(GIS) environment. The Kwangneung Experimental Forest located in Kyongki Province was selected for the study area. Initially, twelve years of hourly rainfall records that were collected from 1982 to 1993 were processed to obtain the rainfall factor(R) value for the LISLE calculation. Soil survey map and topographic map of the study area were digitized and subsequent input values(K, L, S factors) were derived. The cover type and management factor (C) values were obtained from the classification of Landsat Thematic Mapper(CM) satellite imagery. All these input values were geographically registered over a common map coordinate with $25{\times}25m^2$ ground resolution. The USLE was calculated for every grid location by selecting necessary input values from the digital base maps. Once the LISLE was calculated, the resultant soil loss values(A) were represented by both numerical values and map format. Using GIS to run the LISLE, it is possible to pent out the exact locations where soil loss potential is high. In addition, this approach can be a very effective tool to monitor possible soil loss hazard under the situations of forest changes, such as conversion of forest lands to other uses, forest road construction, timber harvesting, and forest damages caused by fire, insect, and diseases.
Soil disturbance caused by timber harvesting is widely recognized as a potential threat to forest utilization. The degree and extent of soil disturbance is believed to vary with respect to harvesting methods and logging machines. This study has conducted to assess the degree of soil disturbance associated with ground-based cut-to-length (GC) and cable yarding with whole tree (CW) harvesting methods. Soil disturbance was classified using a visual assessment of harvest unit. The properties of soils in different disturbance levels were also evaluated to understand the influence of timber harvesting on soil structure with soil core sampling method. The deep disturbance and soil compaction were observed in sites by 48% and 23% through harvesting areas for GC and CW logging methods, respectively. The results showed that logging machine and number of machine passage had significant influences on soil bulk density and porosity. Soil disturbance types such as rutted, slash cover, and compact were influenced by equipment travel trends in a GC method.
This study was carried out to investigate the water storage charateristics of surface soil by different forest floor conditions and to measure water storage capacity of forest Land at the Yeungnam University forest in Yongjang-ri, Nenam-myoen, Kyongju-gun, Kyongsangbuk-do. The study was conducted for 4 months, from June to September, 1993. The results were summarized as follows ; 1. Infiltration capacity of surface soil for each. forest floor condition was in the order : Oak forest>Oak forest removed $A_o$ layer>Pine forest removed $A_o$ layer>Pine forest>Bare land>Grasses. 2. The absolute values of infiltration capacity were increased as the rain intensity increased, while the order of infiltration capacity for each floor condition was not changed. 3. Infiltration capacity was highly correlated with surface soil hardness and todal pores. 4. Infiltration formula based on the Horton's could be estimated at each forest floor condition. 5. The model for water storage capacity of forest land expressed by infiltration capacity was estimated using total pores and soil hardness. This study indicates water storage capacity of different forest floor conditions depends on infiltration capacity. Using these formula, it was possible to calculate and estimate water storage capacity of forest land. Therefore, the result of this study will be helpful to increase water storage capacity of forest land and to manage water resources effectively.

The production of high quality seedlings is a very important phase in silvicultural systems for successful reforestation or restoration. The purpose of this study was to measure both growth performances and nutrient responses of Fraxinus rhynchophylla and Pinus densiflora seedlings, which are commercially planted in Korea, according to soil improvement treatments. We applied 8 types of soil improvements: control with no treatment, compost B and compost Y as organic materials, vermiculite, perlite, two level of zeolite, and mix of vermiculite, perlite, and zeolite as inorganic materials in a permanent national nursery. Only compost B treatment significantly increased soil pH, organic matter, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, exchangeable potassium and calcium at the 0-10 cm soil depth. The growth of F. rhynchophylla and P. densiflora was the highest at the compost B treatment and the lowest at the vermiculate treatment. Compost B treatment allocated more carbon to aboveground than belowground by 39%, especially to foliage. On the vector diagnosis, there was 'shortage' on compost B treatment because of all increases of N contents, N concentrations, and growth and 'over accumulation' on vermiculite treatment because of more N uptake compared with dry weight increase. This study suggested optimal use of soil improvements is very important to improve soil quality in a permanently used nursery.
